Calder knew desperation when he saw it, especially when it was putting his arms in a death grip that would have made a ogre ashamed. Wincing, he looked at the other boil. "Sure. Sure. I won't tell anyone. Auuuhh. Don't break my arms I need those for running." He whined, pulling out of the demon's grip to rub his arms. He hoped he wouldn't get any bruising. His leeches hated that.
"I'm not super smart either. Seems mean to say that to everyone. So why are you even in a library if you can't read. Didn't your mom or dad help you?" He wondering a moment. "Or whatever you are...has to grow up with? Brood? Herd? Uh...Master?" He was just listing examples he found out from others.
Then he through a moment. "Or are you like my mom and know everything through talking?"

Charlie stayed frozen even after Calder had pulled out of his grip. He just was kind of frozen in that position with a distressed look still firmly frozen on his mug. He said nothing when Calder said he was not smart nor when the Kelpie asked about his up bringing until the fact that Calders mother could not read was brought up.
Charlie untensed.
"Your mom can't read either?" Charlie felt a bit of a kin ship with Calder all of a sudden. "....Well.... My mom never had time to really teach me much besides how to count cards and stuff like that." Charlie folded his arms behind his head finding nothing wrong with what he had just said. "She taught me how to sew and cook and Im pretty good about counting money too.... But reading never came up. Not important?"

"My mom can read to get buy, but she doesn't know that much English and it's hard for her. She likes speaking traditionally, and all the people from her clan taught everything through song and words. We don't really have a written language. Well, not till recently, but usually we just show each other what to do and teach each other things. It's why we don't have libraries. I only had books and learned cause my dad knew I'd need it for school, and he grew up with teachers. This is the first school I've been in too. If I was in a big herd, I'd just stay there and learn from them." He smiled though. "..but I like reading. There are things I can read that would be so weird if my dad read them to me, and I don't have to wait for anyone to read me something or tell me stuff when I want to know it. It's all here."
He liked reading, and he wouldn't know half the dirty stories he did without it. "Not that I don't like pictures." He smiled, thinking of some cute books he saw and some rather inappropriate magazines on the other scope of things.
"Your mom just sounds busy, but she taught you a lot of other stuff. Do ya want to read? I mean, if you can't read, ow are you even doing homework? Did you get a free pass? Can I get a free pass? I don't want to read this boring homework anymore."

Charlie nodded in agreement.
"Yeah I think my mom was just to busy to teach me how to read. I got this letter though from my dad and one day I want to read it... He went off on a very long vacation when I was little," Charlie gave Calder a smile. In truth, Charlies dad had run off leaving him and his mom to fend for him self. The pink haired demon believed it was a vacation though because thats what his mother always used to say.
"I have to wonder what sort of letter he'd send me after all this time." The demon tilted his head. "Traditional language?" He changed the topic back to Calders mom and her language.

Calder glanced as he saw two students who had been studying nearby from the aisle they were in get up and walk away. It seemed the two boils were going to be clearing out the library rather soon at this rate. Not caring, Calder turned his attention to the shelves, looking for another book on leeches but deciding he really shouldn't. He didn't have the time with all the other stuff he had to read.
Turning, he smiled at Charlie. "Well, if you're a kelpie, you sort of just speak it. It's like part horse and other things that meshed together and created out native language. It's one that works when I'm a person and when I'm shifted, so that it's not hard to work words with my tongue." He stuck out this tounge. "Cauth mah tung ith diffent when Immm a lookin like a horth." He stuck his tongue back in, smiling. He could do a mean Christof imitation with that trick. "I mean, when I'm shifted, my tongue can't do the same words as when I'm like this. So our language works on both tongues. It does a lot with ear movement too." To which he pointed to the ears atop his head. "It's a lot of different things. My mom likes using the language she knew as a kid. I learned more than one, and I can read in both."

The fact that students busy studying and what not cleared the aisle as soon as Calder and Charlie turned a corner still did not set off any red flags that maybe the duo were being just a tinsy bit loud. No. It didn't bother the fallen at all.
and as soon as Calder had his tongue out Charlie was following suit.
"THOAH! THITHHHSS ITHH FUTHHHH" The demon could get used to this. He continued to keep his tongue out while he listened to what Calder had to say. Only after did he put his tongue back in his mouth.
"Horse tongue?" The demon gave a tilt of his head. "OH! Your one of those fun students who have another form? Thats so neat! So your not a witch after all... I think? I mean I think your pretty enough if you wanted to be one..." Charlie looked thoughtful for a moment as he imagined Calder in a cute witch outfit.. and as a girl.

There it was again. Pretty. It wasn't said in a bad way either, and this time he knew he was a boil. So he was still pretty? Calder paused a moment to smile and gestured in a 'Oh, do stop' manner, before looking away a moment. It was at least nice to hear once in a while, though really, he should be trying to look scary. I'm prettier if I spruced up a bit? Oh great, now he was thinking like his dad! He had messed up his hair and clothes just to go away from 'pretty', though....
Calder turned back, a little pink about the edges. "Oh no. I'm not a witch. I'm a kelpie. I can change into another form, but I'm not a witch. Have you ever been on a broom? It goes really high up there." He shivered at the memory when Belladonna gave him a ride. "Nope. I like the ground and the water. Right here. Not in the air."
What were they doing again? It probably wasn't a good idea to get two clearly social and ADD characters talking, but Calder managed to be reminded what they were talking about when he looked at all the books around him again. "So are you taking reading lessons in school?" He asked, wondering if Amityville did that? He guessed so since it was a school. "....so you can read that letter."

"A broom. I've held a broom before for sweeping but I don't recall actually being on a broom before. Thats just silly." Charlie scratched his head. "Brooms are for cleaning and kelpie? Guess that isn't a witch either."
Reading classes? Charlie looked at Calder almost expectantly as if to go on about these majestic reading classes.
"I.. well no one knows about the fact that I can't read." Charlie shrugged. He was ashamed, "And I can't really read the classes offered so I don't know if there is one or not."

"Wait. No. Brooms and kelpies don't go together. I mean, maybe if you want to sweep a room, but we don't have brooms like witches. We don't fly on them. They do." His brain hurt a bit for a moment, but he shook it off.
"Ohh. That's sad. How are you supposed to read the letter than?" He frowned, thinking of what the letter might say even if it wasn't even addressed to him. Just knowing there was a secret written on a letter that no one else read (or so he let himself believe), was interesting. "I guess that makes sense. Can't read a sigh for reading. I wonder if they'd just pictures for that then. I haven't seen any picture classes though. I don't think the school has them." He tried to recall anything about reading classes when looking at the class list and remembered nothing close to it. How the heck did Charlie even pick his classes then or manage this long without reading.
"Someone's going to find out. I have to write a lot for my classes. Teachers get angry if you don't do your homework." Poor Charlie might get detentions all the time if he didn't or get kicked out. That would be bad!
Looking about, he reached out and took Charlie's droopy sleeve. "Come with me." He started to lead him off to a small Children section of the library.

Charlie frowned at what he was hearing. Kicked out? For not doing home work and what not? That would be a sad day. Then he'd NEVER learn about how to read. Who could teach him if he got kicked out of an academy?
But then Calder took his sleeve and directed him to a more colorful section. It was a lot more cheerful the deeper the two got. Lots of colorful books with pictures of cutesy drawn things. Like Spanky the vampire bat and Shivers the bleeding eyed ghost ghoul. It was a very happy section in deed.
"So.. why are we in this wonderful place? I though libraries were supposed to be boring." He looked around more at the brightly colored books.

Calder loved this section and had no shame in coming here to flip through the colorful books. He liked drawings, and he liked easy reading at times. "This is the kid books. It's when you start to read. They give you lots of pictures so you know what's going on, and easy words to read. That way you can learn slowly. It's how I learned." He looked around and located the 'See Rot Run' books, and grabbed on, beaming as he opened a book.

As soon as Calder opened Charlie was entranced at the picture of the zombie puppy. Was that cute little guy up to some sort of adventure? He reached out a sleeved hand to attempt to touch the picture thinking that it would be soft but was instead disappointed by the feel of the smooth cold paper. The demon frowned a little as he returned his hand to his side.
"Books are expensive? " He blinked (As best as a Charlie can blink) at the kelpie as he went on about the books he owned. Maybe touching the book wasn't a good idea.
"The letters... what do they say?" The demon looked up at Calder again with a half head tilt. Truly Charlie had no idea where to begin.

Calder scooted over, not that there wasn't plenty of room, and patted the carpet next to him. "It says..."This is Rot. Rot is a puppy. Rot is very happy." He beamed at his own ability to read, and pointed to each word that he read to show Charlie, not that Charlie would know what the word was anyways. "We can come and read books here. Then when you know how, we can work on the books together. There are a lot here and you can take then out for as long as you want." Not really, but Calder tended to.

This excited the little pink haired demon like nothing else. They could work on books together? That sounded AWESOME.
"This is Rot." He smiled at Calder repeating what he'd said after he was done reading it. Though that was as far as Charlie remembered. Still he was proud of him self for that much and it showed in the grin he wore.
"Okay! Its a deal then Calder. You're my new book friend! No wait, you can be my friend too if you want. Your pretty and cool. Pretty cool!" He gave the kelpie a thumbs up from under fabric sleeves.

Calder looked at the odd gesture and slowly did the same. It was strange, but he sort of got what it meant. He saw other kids do it all the time. It must be a good thing. The only reason it didn't catch on with his kind was that you really couldn't do a thumb's up in kelpie form when you had hooves and not fingers. A good stomp was a way they showed excitement or approval.
At the book, Calder shook his head. "You can't just memorize it. If I'm not around, you could never read any of the books here. We'll have to go through each letter, because each letter makes a sound, and each sound forms a word. Like how I talk. Rot is 3 letters. See." He pointed to Rot's name and the three symbols one by one. "R-O-T. That spells Rot. And each letter makes a sound. And that sound makes the words you understand. It's really crazy how it works, but once you get those down, the rest gets a lot better. Then you can come here all by yourself if you wanted to read whatever you wanted, whenever you wanted." He beamed at that very freedom.
"But we have to start from the roots, up. Can't grow any other way."
