He leaned close to the indicated shoulder, whiskers spread wide, mouth open in a soft pant to inhale more subtle scent. His expression was worried, his muzzle and forehead wrinkled into lines. What he wanted to do was groom the area to assure himself of broken skin or swelling, but that really wasn't polite, and wasn't his place... so long as he wasn't her Pad, anyway. A welter of confusing emotions crowded his face as he pulled back again, swirling inside him and each demanding his attention.
Should he ask her? He'd had only luck finding friends, but noone he'd take back home again. But this female needed a protector... the big question was, did she want a protector, and if so, would she want him? Distractedly he took another mouthful of meat and swallowed, completely unaware of his injuries once more. The worried wrinkles remained around his eyes, and he kept glancing at her as if about to say something, then stopping. Despite his previous encounters, he found himself at a complete loss for words. How in the world was he going to ask her to come with him?
Finally, he ventured to speak. "I could, uh...," he started, stumbling when his voice broke and then steadied again. He cleared his throat and tried again, visibly nervous but also just as visibly sincere in his concern. "I could look after you," he managed to offer at last. "I could hunt for you while your shoulder heals," he went on, finding his words slowly increasing in speed, like an avalanche of rocks, "and if you came home with me, you wouldn't have to hunt alone anymore, cause all our females help each other, and I'd help you too, if you'd have me." His words tumbled to a rather abrupt halt, and he had a rather startled and stunned look on his face, like an antelope suddenly faced with a predator not two feet away. Oh dear, this was madness! Surely she'd refuse such a clumsy proposition!

Ng'arange felt her heart skip a beat and her stomach turn when he offered to help her. It was sweet how he stammered and such a kind offer-- until suddenly he was suggesting something other than his company and she couldn't hide the look of surprise. There was a reason she was out here alone, and certainly it wasn't easy but she had never gone looking for help. Butterflies filled her stomach as she looked at him with wide, dark eyes, clearly stunned but her expression giving no indication of positive or negative. She was independent, a rogue.. but what happened today was scary and she definitely wanted Faraji to stick around. He was her hero, though she did not know him that well and she already felt a twinge of anxiety at the idea of him leaving.
"May- maybe you could stay with me," she murmured lamely, though she knew by how he spoke of his home it wasn't going to go that way and so she pressed on, "Just for a bit, I mean, you can tell me about your home- and- and about you.."

That sounded promising... or at least as if there was a possibility there! This was his first offer that had not been turned down right off! A shiver of excitement ran through him pleasantly. But staying here... hmm. He really was far from home, and the desire to go back was growing stronger. Perhaps a compromise? "Could we... travel together towards my home?" He tipped his head endearingly with this counter offer. "It's a long way home for me. We could take it slow and easy for your shoulder, and we could talk as we go?" He hoped it would be sufficient to make her comfortable. "I'd still hunt for us, and it would give your shoulder time to heal." He didn't add that it would give her time to think about his offer, but the unspoken words hung in the air, clear as day.
He tried not to think about all the time it would give her to change her mind about him, too. About how he could be close to home and have her leave him, bereft of a banu and doomed to roam once more, looking for the right girl. He took a deep breath, calming the fears enough to push them into the back of his mind. He'd just have to spend his time wisely and show Ng'arange why she should pick him. It would be a wonderful chance to get to know her too, for he felt as if that was as important as her getting to know him. "What do you say?" he asked hopefully.

Hmm. A compromise was better than she had turned his invitation back on him. She was still attached to the idea of having him around more and while the idea of heading for his home seemed almost like giving in.. she still wanted to say yes. But he had a home to go back to, she had nowhere she needed to go, so it made sense, too.
"OK," she said, smiling hesitantly.

His heart swelled at the answer she gave. Why he felt so sure she'd come all the way home with him, he couldn't have said. Things just felt... right with her. This was the happy ending, right? The joy of finding someone to share life with... though he wasn't really very sure this was what others called "love". It certainly was a matter of caring about her, however. Maybe love was supposed to grow? It made sense for it to happen that way, if he stopped to think about it. But for now... he had a girl coming... well, if not home, at least towards home with him!
"I'll take good care of you," he told her sincerely. "I promise." He beamed at her, his expression one of almost boyish happiness, but now touched with a better appreciation of both the blessings and dangers of life. Perilous or content, life really could only be better if she would just agree to stay with him. For now, he hunkered down to finish eating. "Let's wait until tomorrow morning, then we can start for home." He flashed a smile at her. "I can hardly wait to tell you about it."
