"I never feel cold in the snow, not really. My coat is a little rougher, so it keeps the snow off of me, and it's very warm. In the summer it's sometimes too warm." She said with a small grin.

"I do remember enjoying snuggling up with Clarise after a long day of playing and searching for food. It's been a long time since she's been a kit though. Do you have any family that you like curling up with during the winter?" She asked the dogfox, hoping the question wasn't too prying.

Briar blinked and looked off to the side. "I live on my own," he said, hedging around the question, then attempting to take the focus off himself, "Clarise? Do you have siblings, or children?"

Briar still wasn't sure how to talk about his family to others. He hardly had anyone to talk to as it was. What if they heard about all the things his parents had said and his brother had done, and thought they were in the right? Sometimes he was still never quite sure that they were wrong.

Vixen didn't miss the subject skirting, but decided not to persue it for now. After all, she barely knew this fox. If he didn't want to tell her, then that was just fine. Instead, she happily followed his tangental subject change.

"Clarice is my daughter. She came out of the one and only meeting of another of my kind. It turned out that there was some tainted water Dasher and I had gotten ahold of." She explained quite candidly. She was in no way embarrassed about having Clarice, Peyton, or Klamber.

Briar tilted his head, confused. "You have children, but you are not mated." Oh, he hoped this vixen never met his family. They were the overzealous kind that thought their way was the only right way, and one of the many things they'd harped about was how it was wrong to have children before one was mated. Since Briar himself hadn't shown interest in anyone it was one of their few "rules" he hadn't somehow broken, but they always muttered darkly that he would turn out bad.

Briar felt a hint of protectiveness stir in him, even though he barely knew this vixen, was sure she could take care of herself, and wasn't even sure that she wasn't mated to the father of her kids. Even as he realized all of that, he still felt protective. How very odd...

Briar's first comment was a bit blunt, but Vixen's eyes glinted in amusement rather than anger. She wasn't one to get offended easily, and she knew that other foxes had their own opinions. "That's right. I hate to call the encounter an accident, but I guess you could put it in that category. Dasher and I are friends, but we're just not the right person for each other's mate."

She tilted her head and regarded the dog-fox. "You don't mind, do you?" She asked. She certainly hoped not. The male was nice and she didn't want their tentative friendship to end just because of a difference in opinion.

Briar saw how he might have made a mistake, and quickly shook his head. "No, not at all! My-my parents, well-," Briar stopped, and a shyly apologetic smile crossed his face. "I'll just leave it at them being very strict and....old-fashioned."

He pawed the ground, looking down to help him focus on arranging his words, then looked back up. "I only really commented since that was how I was raised. Since I started living on my own I've been....throwing aside a lot of the preconceived notions they planted in me."

Briar laughed shortly, in an attempt to dispell any awkwardness his words might have brought up. "Pushing all the details aside, all of that basicly means that I have no problems with individuals that have kids with someone other than a mate. It's....such a personal thing, and it feels wrong to judge someone by it," Briar finished, still feeling awkward. Like he was just babbling and not effectively explaining himself.

Ah. His parents were the one with issues. Still, it was probably a bit of a shock at first, the same as when she realized she was having kits without a mate. Well, maybe not the exact same...but similar. Vixen could definitely understand. "It is unfair to judge someone on that, I agree. There are many extenuating circumstances that can go along with mateless foxes having kits."

She moved forward and sat next to Briar, nudging him gently with her shoulder. "No worries, though. I'm not going to blame you for your parent's ideas. Or even your own ideas. Everyone gets an opinion."

Briar chuckled softly, and lightly bumped Vixen back. "Trouble is, I don't really know what my own opinions are," he said. "I've been figuring it out piece by piece, but there are an awful lot of pieces still missing." He glanced at the deerfox. "Does that make any sense?"

Vixen thought about that for a few seconds before turning back to Briar with a slight frown. "You mean that your parents were so...adamant about their opinions, they basically forced them on you. Now you're trying to figure out if you actually agree with them or if you just went along with them because your parents said so?"

Briar nodded. "That's about as accurate a summary as there can be." He looked down at the ground, then back up. "I'd rather not go into details, if it can be helped. A lot of it is kinda confusing and seems to contradict itself and the rest..." His smile was quite melancholy. "Well kits are resilient but parents can do a lot of damage."

"Vixen nodded. "I understand, and I wont press. Come on, lets get off the gloomy topic. If you're interested, I know of a meadow not too far from here. There are flowers, butterflies, and a small stream if you're thirsty or want to take a dip."

She smiled at briar and wagged her stub of a tail, setting her bells to tinkling again. "Or I can tell you of the legend of the nice man in the north."

Briar chuckled. It was funny, how this vixen's good cheer just naturally lifted him from his own gloom. "I'll take you up on that," he said. "How about we walk to this meadow, and you can either tell me the story as we walk or you can pick good story-telling spot and I'll sit and listen." He knew some foxes spoke better when moving. He was more of a sitter, himself, but Vixen could be different.

"I should probably start it now. It isn't the shortest story." She hopped up and smiled at Briar. "The meadow's this way." She started forward, making sure Briar was next to her before she started her story.

"Okay. So the legend goes: Many generations ago, and only in the far north, a special breed of modifox was born with strange antlers. These strange deer-fox live side-by-side with normal foxes, and they couldn't figure out why they had been born different. Many didn't seem to mind, but a small group wanted to know what their purpose in life was, why they were born so strange.

Finally deciding that they had to know what their purpose was, the group of nine set out on their journey. They wandered far from their lands, finally getting lost in the snow." Vixen paused and shot a look at Briar, hoping the story wasn't boring him too much.

Briar was watching Vixen as attentively as he could while making sure he didn't trip over or run into anything. He blinked when she reached a stopping point and turned to look at him. "They didn't stay lost though, did they," he asked, figuring the story wouldn't be a story if the opening characters died right off.

Vixen smiled and shook her head. "Nope. Because there was a large, male human living nearby. He lived in a small house with his mate and many, many human perma-kits. They survived out in the wilderness by building toys. They would give out these toys once a year in exchange for 'milk' and 'cookies', some tipe of human food that's supposed to be delicious. But the human had a problem. It was getting harder and harder for the old human to get the toys to the increasing nuber of human kits in the world."

They broke into the meadow Vixen had mentioned and she pranced, tinkling her bells. "Ah, isn't it pretty?" She asked, trotting over to the stream. "Excuse me, I need a quick drink."
