Well. This seemed to be going well. Malodore opened its beak in a reassuring smile, then focused on the walk ahead of them. They actually weren't all that far away from Amityville Academy - not even deep enough into the forest to hit the 'forbidden' bits of the woods. Within five minutes' careful walking, the light at the edge of the forest was clearly visible.

Luce, for her part, trotted beside her new friend, occasionally veering close enough that her side touched his fluffy fur. So fluffy! Her tail waved above them both like a flag.

Jove may have been lost, but at least the weather was nice, and he did always enjoy walks. Especially through the woods, for some reason the foxfire was always drawn to the earthy scents of loam and vegetation, and on a warm day those scents just drifted into the air to be trapped and held in by the canopy overhead. He took pleasure in these scents, and his friendly company, even despite the slight anxiety still crawling around inside him.

Once he finally saw the break in the trees, little Jove darted forward, ears perked happily. There it was! He was back at the school and not lost anymore! His fluffy tail only now wagged back and forth over his fluffy back in fits and starts. He glanced back at the friendly creature who had shown him the way out.

"Thanks!" He chirped out in his small, child's voice, something no normal foxfire could ever manage, before dashing out of the forest and off to his dorm.

Malodore blinked.

Luce fell over on her side with shock.

And then the plague doctor started laughing, watching the little blue blur zip off across campus towards the dormitories. "Oh, my - tresorina, I do not think that was a pet..." Thankfully, it hadn't done anything strange, it hoped. Nothing too... cutesy-wutesy.

Luce, for her part, shook herself all over and jumped up, barking at the retreating foxfire-ish creature. It was hard to tell if her barks were scolding or farewells...

Jove zoomed right back to his dorm room, taking a moment to run in circles with the foxfires that had been woken up by his presence. It always felt good to be back somewhere familiar after he had been scared into running away, and the little poofs that zoomed with him just thought the zooming was good. They were always happy when he came back, regardless of how long he had been gone.

When Jove changed back into his human form they scattered about and zoomed in their own individual crazy patterns. He quickly dressed in his usual attire, pausing only to grab a couple things before heading back out the door.

Holding the items close to his body he trotted back out to the field, hoping to see his rescuer, or at least catch it's scent so he could track it down and properly thank it for showing him the way home.

Malodore and Luce were pretty much where they had been, only Luce was now running back and forth after a ball that the plague doctor was throwing. The pup slid to a halt at the student's approach, her nose lifted high in the air, twitching as she tried to figure out why the scent of the dog was now attached to a personthing...

When Jove caught sight of the pair near the woods, he slowed down and approached almost shyly. Sometimes things were more awkward when he was in this form, there was the expectation of talking and proper greetings...

When he got within arm's reach, he held out the two items he had taken from his dorm. The first was a small stick of new rawhide, for Luce. The second, a tuft of pale, creamy mushrooms that appeared to be potted in a pilfered dessert bowl from the cafeteria. They were some of his favourite species of mushroom, which had just the right pale blue glow at night. He wasn't sure if the robed creature would care for mushrooms, but Jove didn't have much of value with which to express his gratitude.

Malodore let the ball slip free from its fingers and opened its beak in a smile. "Buon giorno - I presume you are the one we found in the forest?" It tilted its head at the mushrooms with interest, holding out both hands cupped for them.

Luce, meanwhile, paced suspiciously around the outside, not bristling at the new face but obviously wary and highly confused.

Although Jove didn't understand what the creature had stared saying, he could recognize that open-mouthed expression as a bird-like smile. And it's voice was still gentle and very polite.

The little ghostling nodded as he passed over the mushrooms. He was a little anxious at Luce's behaviour since it was clear she didn't know what was going on. With a little whine himself, one that would have been familiar to both the creature and the puppy, he tilted his head and held up the small stick of rawhide to the creature, silently asking if he could give it to Luce.

"Grazie," Malodore murmured, dipping its head to examine the mushrooms. Interesting! Were they meant to be eaten? Were they poisonous? It would have to crack open the books when it got back to its dorm room. "I, ah, don't believe we've met, formally - my name is L.C. Malodore, but please, call me Malodore. And this is Luce," it added, nodding in the pup's direction. "She loves treats..."

Luce stood in place, looking from Malodore to the ghost-person-dog-not-dog-???, her ears tilted backwards just a little bit. She still didn't understand where her doggie friend had gone... and why this person smelled so much like him!

Jove relaxed a little as the creature, Malodore, took the mushrooms. Searching the literature would reveal they were only slightly hallucinogenic when eaten, but not harmful in the long term. The pup prized them mostly for their beautiful bright glow at night.

His fluffy ears perked, was Malodore giving him the okay to let Luce have the rawhide? The ghost's tail wagged twice. Kneeling down to the pale puppy's level, he held out his hand with the rawhide stick resting on his open palm and ready for the taking.

Their new friend was quiet. That was okay; Malodore instead opened its beak in a smile and watched Luce. "Andare avanti, tresorina," it told her, encouragingly.

The pup glanced at Malodore, then back at the new boil, ears perking up then dropping again. She took a few steps forward and licked the end of the rawhide stick, then gingerly opened her mouth and picked up the thing, dragging it backwards off of the boil's palm. Very slowly and carefully, as if expecting to be told no! at any moment.

Jove's tail gave a happy wag, curling up and around so it touched his back as it did so. He knew what it was like to be nervous. The wisp had spent most of his life being downright terrified, so while Luce approached and hesitantly took the rawhide he remained completely still save for his tail. Once she was a little ways from him he pulled his hand back and stood up.

What a nice little puppy she was... Jove felt bad for the unintentional deception, sometimes he forgot the average minipet understood things differently. He was so much like them in many ways, only his mind had set him apart.

When no no! came, Luce wagged her tail back at the dog-ghost-boy-???, tentatively at first... then a bit faster as she gave the rawhide stick a good chew. Mmm! Tasty!

Malodore chuckled lightly. "I think, perhaps, that you startled her? I myself did not realize you were not a foxfire variant myself, at first... my apologies." It nodded to the boil.

Jove's fluffy ears folded down and sideways, giving the creature a sheepish, apologetic look. For all his current form's human appearance, the core of that expression was that of a puppy like any other.

He shook his head, no apologies were necessary. He was a foxfire in most respects and counted himself as one of them, if a great deal smarter and more intellectually capable, so it only seemed a matter of course he would be mistaken for one.

He glanced back over at Luce, and for a couple seconds his tail wagged. It really was a good rawhide, and he was very glad she was enjoying it. If she hadn't lured Malodore to him, he might not have found his way back.

Luce responded to the boil's tail-wag with one of her own, slowly working her way up to full wagging speed as she gnawed on the rawhide. Pretty soon she was stretched out on the path, rawhide stick clasped between two front paws as she nommed energetically, tail wriggling all the while.

"I think she forgives you," Malodore said, cheerfully.
