Mae watched the group before them as they tore into the carcass. The area reeked of the death, the herbs here would be tainted and unfit to use. The sounds of the crows echoed in her ear. "Food. Food." they cried as they watched down upon the canines from the branches above. More and more of the skylight became blocked by wings of black. This was a kill. It was not like the ones back at the pack.

This was a kill and a fight to survive out here.

It only put things into perspective of how privileged the two siblings were to have a loving family and friends as they did. Here, these pack of coyotes were fighting one another for food and the crows were just ready to swoop down for what was left. This was chaos.

However, who was she to judge by appearance, she knew not of their lifestyle in the den. Still, she watched them with hints of fascination.

Adrastos was frozen in place, fascinated by the smaller canines. At first he thought that they were eating in peace with one another, but now he realized that they kept snarling at each other, trying to drag the carcass away from each other. Were they not a pack?

He shifted forward, moving closer, and his rapture kept him from paying attention to the most important factor of a stalking predator: silence. A twig snapped beneath his paw pad, and the coyotes all froze, heads whipping around. They charged almost as one, as if now they were of a united mind, and all of them added up to more teeth and claws than him and his sister.

"Mae, run!"

Mae panted as she ran behind her brother in fear of the snapping jaws and the snarling, frothing mouths of the hounds behind them. Was this their territory? Was this forbidden grounds for wolves? What will they do if they catch them?

"Adras, we must get out of here!" She shouted as she panted behind him. What are they to do? The herbs! "The herbs, brother, follow them back to the falls. We will lose them there, surely they cannot climb or else they would have entered our territory."

Nodding, he grabbed a branch as they passed, whipping it back. The coyotes were getting closer, snapping at the air and yowling in their eerie howling bark. Just before they could snap at his flesh, he released the taught branch, watching as it smacked them all in the face.

Howling with laughter, Adrastos barreled after his sister, taking advantage of the coyotes' distraction. The two wolves reached the falls, launching themselves up onto the first rocks.

"Little bastards! What are they?" he panted, scrambling up the rocks. A glance over his shoulder, and he suddenly stopped climbing. The little pack had stopped at the base of the rocks, too small to make the climb themselves. Adrastos barked in glee, startling a crow that had settled upon the moist stones. The cream colored wolf yelped in surprise as it leapt into the air just in front of his face, losing his footing on the slippery rocks and falling away into empty space before slamming into the ground right in the middle of the pack.

"Adras!" Mae cried as she watched her brother fall down. In her mind everything just seemed slowed. The roar of the falls fell silent. The eyes of the male grew wide as his body slowly propelled forward, slipping off the edge he rested upon, sprawling in the air as he fell. She watched her brother fall until the only sound that echoed in her ears was the thud.

"Adras!" quickly jumping down, from edge to edge and unto the ground, standing over her brother. Surely her back was exposed, these... things were all around them. "Back you mangy insects!" She snarled and snapped. Meek was the usual for her but this was her brother, the closest thing she had as a partner. What were she to do if he was gone?

"Adras, get your butt up."

One of the mangy bastards darted in and snapped at his ankle, tearing flesh and drawing blood. He snarled, whipping around and clawing it's face. His sister's bravery astounded him, and he swelled with pride that they were siblings. However, when he tried to walk forward, his injured foot gave out and he stumbled.

"Sister, go. I'll follow," he panted, eyeing the creatures surrounding them. They had moved back a bit, seeing their comrade bleeding from the gashes on its nose. But he knew they would regain their courage soon enough and attack. He could vaguely understand some of their annoying yips, wondering if they really were a different species of wolf.

However, he was unwilling to stay and find out, jumping onto the rocks again, careful to keep his feet held up.

Mae moved slowly, following the bent-stem herbs to retrace their steps up the cliff face again. She barked and snarl warnings and threats, hoping to fear them away. But no, those smaller canines were persistent in their jumps and growls, attempting to reach them from the base. These things were willing to kill those of the same family as them... they just wanted food, didn't care what it was from.

Scavengers.

Reaching the top of the plateau, she stood panting, watching the scavengers below and the wounded male that was coming up behind her. Their adventures got them into a lot of messes, but not many were this dangerous. Mae looked to her brother with a grim, sympathetic expression.

"Never again, Adras. Never again am I going back down there."

Panting, he finally pulled himself over the edge, sprawling in front of his sister. Dirt clung to his damp fur, and blood dripped from his wounded foot.

"Yeah, alright. Although I'm sure it was just poor timing..."

He licked his foot, but felt too tired to do much else. "C'mon. Let's get back home," he murmured, rising to his feet. His limbs shook a little, unused to climbing vertically for as long as they had. But it had been a wonderful adventure either way, and that was what he lived for.

It had been worth it.

"Race ya," he said with a grin, eyes glinting. Ignoring his foot, he sprinted off three-legged, leaving Maera behind.

Mae gasped as he challenged her, racing away with that retarded limp. He wasn't going to win. With a smile, she walked behind him. Adventurous as today was, it was dangerous, Adras was hurt and it could have ended up with them dead in a place the pack has not gone to before. No one would have known where they were and father would be very much upset.

Still, it was interesting and new.

....

"Adras, you better not be running on that leg! I still need to put herbs on it to make it better!!!!"
