Renei Vorcos and Harold Gontrullion were walking together to the Records Office. Actually, he was walking backwards, the better to watch her while she signed to him.

<"So the whole reason I was hired was to chase down this hitman?"> Renei signed, looking a little skeptically at the half-demon. <"What made you think I could handle something like that?">

Harold tilted his head in mock thought, still walking smoothly backwards. He knew this building like the back of his hand, and trusted Renei to give him fair warning of anything he might possibly run into. She was far more observant and aware of her surroundings than most hearing people were. He signed back, <"I told you already. It's because this hitman is a Siren. You know, sings to sailors in order to lure them to their watery graves? She's been killing some of the U.S. members and what witness reports we've gotten say she sings to them a lot. Anyone who was hearing and went after her would be susceptible to her songs. You're completely deaf, so you wouldn't be.">

Renei nodded thoughtfully, adding the rest of what he hadn't signed. The fact that she had a degree in Criminal psychology had probably made her irresistible to her employers. Her hands hung in mid-air, the equivalent of thoughtful silence in spoken language.

<"I don't know very much about the case, so you're going to need to look at the case file. That's why we're going to the Records Office. Oh, look, we're here.">

Harold spun around to face a door, his movements inhumanly smooth. He was normally pretty good about maintaining human motions and habits, but sometimes he forgot. Renei, sensitive to how people moved, noticed and suppressed a shudder. She was still adjusting to the fact that her friend was a half-demon. He gestured for her to enter and followed her.

Renei stopped as she saw a young man and woman already in the office, chatting. They turned to look at her and Harold. She hadn't met them yet, so turned to Harold to see if he was in "interpreting mode". Already, he'd moved to where she could see him signing, and was Sim-Comming* his introduction so that she knew what he was saying. Her lip-reading was terrible, since she'd never felt a pressing urge to try and be a hearing person. She was proud of being Deaf.

"Hey, guys. I'm Harold Gontrullion and this is Renei Vorcos. She's Deaf. I'm her interpreter. Just some basic ground rules really quick. If you're talking to her, don't look at me, look at her, even if I'm talking. It'll be a little weird because she won't be looking at you back, but at me while I interpret. I'm going to interpret whatever you guys say, regardless of whether it's directed to her or not. Other than that, it's nice to meet you."

Renei laughed a little at their confused faces. She always found it funny when Harold did that introduction. Other Deaf people might get offended by it, but she personally didn't mind that he talked about her like a lump. She stepped forward and signed, <"It's nice to meet you. I'm looking for a case file that I'm working on.">

User Image Sylvia jumped slightly and let out a surprised "Oh!" when the boy and girl walked in. She didn't recognize the two, but it didn't surprise her. When she was needed for work in the field, Sylvia was in the Records Office, normally working in the back and out of sight. The sudden introduction left her speechless for a moment, but Sylvia blinked and got back on track. "Um... Nice to meet the both of you. I-I'm Sylvia H-Harrow," Sylvia stuttered. She almost smacked herself in the face and covered a flinch. Now her nervous stutter decided to kick in. Syvlia watched... Renei, was it?... Step up and sign something out. Sylvia just blinked in confusion. "I-I'm sorry... I-I'm not sure..." Sylvia stuttered again, pushing her hair behind her ear. She stopped herself before she could turn her whole sentence into a stuttering mess. "You're here for a file?" she asked rather hurriedly, looking at the girl. It was a not-so wild guess. Why else would someone be in the Records Office?

Zander watched as the two came closer to him and Sylvia. As the man introduced them it quickly clicked who the girl was, but Zander was never informed about this man and he didn't like it. He looked at the man with a cautious gaze. "I've already been informed about her." He said pointing to the girl slightly, then crossing his arms on his chest. "Though, no one ever told me there were two new people coming. Gontrullion? That's unique." He gave the girl a sideways glance. She seemed innocent enough, part of him understood why there were so many female members. They all looked easy to manipulate, but this man. There was something not sitting right with Zander. "What do you do? Just Interpret, or do you have something of value for the society?"

((Just so y'alls know, whenever Renei says something, Harold is translating all the time, usually just a few words behind whatever she happens to be signing. Your characters will know what she's saying as long as Harold's there. biggrin Thought I'd clarify that, in case nobody was familiar with how ASL interpreters work.))

Renei noticed the girl was fidgety and nervous, even as she watched Harold sign her question. Most hearing people were like that whenever they first ran into her with an interpreter. They just didn't know how to act. At least it didn't look like the girl was trying to shout in order to be heard. She could never understand why people thought yelling at a Deaf person could make them suddenly understandable. It's not like she could talk back to them.

<"Yes, that's exactly right. Perhaps you could show me how the system works so that I could find the file I need?">

The other man spoke up, and Renei immediately looked to Harold for a translation. The half-demon had shifted slightly away from her and was back to Sim-Comming. Apparently, the statement had been directed at him. With a regular interpreter, something like this wouldn't happen. A normal interpreter would simply ask that everyone behave as if he or she weren't there and simply talk to the Deaf person. Harold, also being an employee of the Underground Society, and an interpreter-on-call, couldn't do that. If there were questions directed to him specifically, he was allowed to answer them, provided he didn't leave anyone out of the loop.

Harold frowned at the human and replied, "Interpretation's what I do the most, but I often get assigned to cases. Sometimes, I interrogate witnesses or prisoners who can't or won't speak English. I'm a half-demon, hence the odd last name. Who're you?"

Renei saw tension in the two men and gave a little sigh. Pulling a small pad of paper and a pen from her pocket, she scribbled something on it. Then she walked over to the girl and showed it to her.

The boys look like they're going to rumble. Why don't you show me how I can get a file while they assert their dominance over each other?

That's what it was, this man was half-demon. That's what caused the unease between him and Zander. He shook his head, he didn't like that the society hired monsters. He didn't feel safe with them around. "King. I'm the great grandson to one of the founding father's of the Society, and just to get this out there. I don't like monsters inside." He looked to the girl again, then back to Harold. "I get it, you two are close so that's why they wouldn't get another interpreter. Whatever, but If I have reason to think you're screwing us over. I don't care if you eat someone else's sandwich in the mess hall. You will be exterminated like the rest of the pests." His eyes reflected the seriousness in his voice, and his straight pose suggested he wasn't intimidated. He turned his head to face the girl before he spoke again. "So what file are you looking for?"

Harold bristled at King's threat. His eyes narrowed, and he briefly considered punching the man so his chest caved in and he'd be out of action for a while. With an effort, he pushed that urge aside. His dad had been able to keep from killing jerks in the Underground Society, so he ought to be able to as well. He knew it wouldn't matter to the human that he'd gone through a rigorous screening in order to prove his loyalty, just like all 'monsters' were. Still, that sandwich comment rankled. Maybe when he and Renei were done here, they'd go to the lunchroom and hunt down this guy's lunch to eat.

He waved a hand at her, and Renei's eyes snapped up, taking in the translation of King's question. She'd ignored the rest of the exchange between him and King, but he knew she'd ask about it later.

<"Oh, it's on the Siren, Valery Mosinn. At least, that's her alias. I'm told that if we could get her real name, some of the Society's clairvoyants could better track her. I'm not sure what that means, but whatever.">

User Image Sylvia flinched slightly at the small conflict between Zander and Harold. It wasn't a very good start to a meeting. She thought Zander was being slightly harsh, but she had to admit she only felt nervous around the half-demon. Sylvia, however, wasn't as distrusting, at least not as quickly. When Harlod mentioned Valery Mosinn, something clicked in the back of Sylvia's head. "Mosinn? I think I put that file away earlier today," Sylvia said, her stutter momentarily vanishing. She was talking about something she knew fairly well, and it calmed her down a little bit. She even seemed to stand up straighter. "Everything in here is organized by the target monster or victim's last name. You have to open the cabinets to find the dates, if there are any relating to the file. The file you're looking for is over in the 'M' section. There's a lot of cabinets, but I can take you two over there and find it for you. I think I remember the cabinet I put the Mosinn file in." Syvlia said. She turned to Zander and asked, "Did you need a file, too? I never asked you why you came in."

(( I thought that was how it is with ASL, but I was a little unsure. I wasn't thinking too clearly when I posted))

Zander hated hearing that beast's voice. He was going to do some digging in personnel files later to see if he could be replaced. He was surprised to hear Sylvia offering her help so quickly, though, with her comment he couldn't help but scoff. "I know my way." He turned and started to walk back the way he came in. He had a copy of his parent's file anyway.
He took out his phone once outside the records hall and quickly dialed his informant's number. It only rang three times before an answer. "What's the word?" A low quiet voice spoke back to him on the other side of the line. "I don't care, find me something interesting and call me back." The voice spoke briefly again before Zander cut it off. "Just do it damn it, I really don't want to have to have to come down there again." Zander hung up his phone and sighed as he started for the shooting range.

((It's cool. If you have questions about anything I post, feel free to ask. Most of what Renei does is based off of what I'm learning about Deaf people in my Deaf Culture class. Nice job, by the way, saying that Harold mentioned it instead of Renei. Appropriate use of description from a hearing person's point of view. =D))

The explanation took a little bit for Harold to translate, since he had to listen to everything Sylvia said first, then switch it to ASL. Once Renei got the translation, she nodded.

<"Seems simple enough. Thank you.">

She began looking at the file cabinets, scanning the labels. Her back was to the door, so she missed King's exit. Besides, she'd found the Mo-Mz section and was carefully rifling through them. She plucked out the file with the tag "Mosinn, Valery" out of the line-up with a triumphant smile. <"Found it. So is there a particular time I have to return it by?">

Renei noted briefly that King had left without even saying goodbye, but it didn't bother her. She did notice, however, that Harold was a little flushed and that his expression was a bit strained in its neutrality. His signing also telegraphed his irritation, being a little stiffer. Renei made up her mind to ask him about it later.

User Image Sylvia watched Zander walk off, not showing any reaction to his reply. She shook her head slightly, figuring it was just how Zander was. When the pair started to head off into the rest of the Office, Sylvia walked slightly ahead of Renei and Harold, so she could put the two files she was holding away. When she came back, Renei had opened one of the cabinets and had one of the files. After Harold translated for her, Sylvia shook her head. "No. You can keep it as long as you like." she said, smiling slightly. She left out the part about the Check-Outs list by Mr. Camden's desk, but Sylvia could take care of that later. "Do you need anything else?" she asked, one of the Records habits Sylvia picked up. Sylvia didn't know what to do now, since all the files were put away. She asumed Mr. Camden wouldn't need much more help today. Hardly anyone came to the Records Office in the past few hours, and normally more people showed up.

(( A girl I know needs an interpretor, so I know a little bit on this kind of thing. Normally her interpretor just signs everything, since the girl can hear a little.

This is going to be the only post from me for today. I have to go help out with something, and by the time I get home it'll be pretty late. ))

((Oh, nice. Yeah, I figured it might be a little too god-mode-ly to have a Siren that could manipulate people through her singing into doing whatever she wanted, so figured a completely Deaf person would be perfect for eventually catching her. And don't worry about the posting. I don't mind.))

Renei shook her head and smiled. <"I think I've got it now."> She found herself liking the young woman, despite her seeming flightiness. Sylvia was polite and her nervousness was endearing rather than off-putting. Questions about the woman's position, how long she'd been working there, and others began crowding her mind, but she reminded herself that she had work to do, and it started with reviewing that file.

Renei headed for the door with a wave, and Harold was on her heels. When they were back out in the hall, he smoothly moved in front of her and began walking backwards again. Renei looked at him and signed, <"What was that all about?">

He tried to look confused, but his brow twitched like it did whenever he was upset. Before he answered, she added, <"And don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about. That thing with King. Did he make you mad or something?">

<"Eh... It was more that he was judging me based on the fact that I'm a half-demon. He didn't like it, and his attitude just rubbed me the wrong way.">

Renei made a gesture that conveyed sympathy and pity at the same time, and Harold's mouth twitched up in a grin. <"Did you see the part where he said he'd put me down if there was any trouble, even if it was eating someone else's sandwich in the lunchroom? It made me want to go find his sandwich and eat it.">

Renei chuckled at that, nodding. <"Well, who do you think handled being told you're a half-demon better, me or him?"> Harold pretended to consider, then signed, <"Definitely him. He only threatened to kill me. You ran away screaming like a little girl. I didn't even know you knew how to scream.">

<"Me neither. Maybe it's just an instinctive reaction?">

<"Maybe."> He grinned at her, then pointed at the file now tucked under one arm so she could sign. <"So what does the almighty case file tell us about Valery?">

She took it out from under her arm and opened it. The first thing she saw was a blurry picture of a woman with extremely curly black hair spinning away from the camera. Quickly scanning over the few papers that were in the file, she concluded that the Underground Society didn't know much about Valery Mosinn. <"There isn't very much. Just a list of successful hits, some short statements from witnesses, autopsy reports of the victims, and a picture. I thought Sirens were like mermaids. There's no tail here.">

<"She could have some shapeshifting abilities. Maybe we should go to the library and look up whatever info they have on Sirens. Learn what they're like.">

Renei nodded agreement. She suddenly grinned mischievously. <"Maybe on the way, we can find that sandwich. I'll eat it if you're afraid to. He didn't say anything about coming after me if I did."> Harold laughed, shaking his head in amusement.

User Image Sylvia waved slightly as the pair walked off. Turning on her heel, Sylvia walked deeper into the Records Office, to Mr. Camden's desk. When she reached it, Mr. Camden wasn't there. "He must be out getting something to eat..." Sylvia muttered to herself, slipping behind the desk.

Sylvia found the lists of all the file names, and it took her a minute to find the name of the one Renei took. Sylvia picked up a pencil that was lying on the desk and wrote 'Renei' under the last person who had looked at the file's name. It was only then that Sylvia realized that she had already forgotten the girl's last name. Sylvia sighed, mentally scolding herself before replacing the list.

Sylvia stayed behind the desk and looked around quickly. She didn't see anyone, so Sylvia took off her glasses and placed them in her pocket, taking the chance to shift forms. Sylvia didn't like shape-shifting in front of other people and always waited until they weren't looking or no one was in the area. Sylvia shifted into a cat, her body shrinking until she crouched on all fours, her clothes and hair melting into gray fur. She learned that small trick a few years back, and it really came in handy. Sylvia padded out from behind the desk and and started off towards the Office's exit.

Emi stood in one of the darker alleyways, watching as some people passed by outside on the side walk. It was dark enough back there for Emi to be hidden entirely. The body was aslo unseen. The mans body lay behind her, and Emi was waiting for her chance to get out of the alley way without being noticed. Emi had beckoned the man into the alleyway earlier and fed off him. He was too drunk to even scream before she had incapitated him. It was too early for the bars to have been open long, and yet this man already drunk himself into a state of pure idiocy. Emi hated humans like that. They were disgusting.

A break in people walking by came and Emi walked quickly out of the alley way, pulling on the jacket she had brought with her to cover the blood stains and hide her eyes from the sun. One of the misconceptions of most vampires is that they burst into flames even at the hint of sunlight. Most of the most daring vampires built up a tolerance to sunlight, as long as most of their body was covered. Emi zipped up the jacket all the way and flung the hood over her head. Emi wore colored contacts when she was walking around amongst the humans to hide her red eyes. Today she was wearing green contacts. 'All in a day's survival.' Emi thought to herself, a small smile coming to her face.

Victoria... Emi

(( Might as well bring her in, seemed like no or not for a long time. ))

A man was riding in a bus that was on his way to his destination. Ryoku couldn't help but like enjoy the sight along the sea coast lines, but then it brought him back bad memories as he tried to shake off the horrible vivid horrors he's been through that haunts him to this day.

"No...can't dwell on the past", as Ryoku figured a way to keep his mind busy, he pulled out a large metal box, which transformed into what looks like a "Rifle", but was a strange one. But it was enough to fool its appearence as a simple metal box. Still it was an unfinished special rifle like weapon, it was almost done. It then shift the shape back into a simple carriable box, acted upon onlys Ryoku's touch. He pulled up his P.H.D. (Planner Handheld Device) and reads where the secret Society base is located in, his second was to meet his the man or woman in charge who was to give out his task.

"This is going to be fun..." he said as the bus was pulling up to his last stop.
