The reason why Edward leaves is because he is wanting to save her from dying. The incident with Jasper was the second time she nearly died because of his secret. He is only trying to protect her because he would rather her get hurt over him and get over it than die and him have to live with himself with her death over him.
The reason why he takes it "lightly" is because he doesn't want to give her hope of him coming back. He would rather try to have her get over him quicker than her think he is coming back.
