'Weird' had been the exact same term Inigo had used to describe the Snivy's behavior, but he didn't mind in the slightest. In hind sight, he figured it was about time he got a second pokemon. He'd had only one for.. how long now? 8 years? Yeah, it was about time he got another one.
If there was one topic that interested the brown-skinned teen more than anything else, it was the subject of research of any kind. His green eyes seemed to brighten at the mention of it. "Really? What kind of pokemon research do you do?" And more importantly, why didn't she mention it when they met before? Well, perhaps she didn't have the job then or something, but whatever. The point was, she did research.

"I don't do research myself," she said, dipping her head slightly in a nonverbal apology. "I'm more of an errand girl. A gofer, I guess you could say. They don't tell me much about the nature of the research since I'm not directly involved in it." Even still, she was mostly telling the truth. What was she doing now if not retrieving requested information from a research site? Just because the means weren't entirely ethical didn't invalidate the assignment.
"I don't have much aptitude for sciences," she admitted, fiddling idly with the pokeball still in her hands, "so I find the processes interesting. I'm generally not allowed to observe, though..." One day she would find a legitimate way to enter the labs and see for herself what kind of work they did and how they went about it. One day.

"Oh, okay," he replied. So she was just an errand girl? Or some sort of assistant perhaps, one that didn't get to do anything fun. Well, all places needed people like that he supposed, it was just unfortunate that she couldn't really get her hands dirty, so to speak. "Well that's no fun." Ethics, however, wasn't something he was too concerned about either. Well, where science was concerned, at any rate.
"Aww, well that's okay," he chuckled, "I don't have much aptitude for anything but science. Cooking doesn't count as a science, so I'm not good at that either." Definitely not good at that. "Anyway, what brings you to la... the beach today?" While it was a fun habit with his parents, he didn't want to confuse Aila with Spanish words.

"Not much fun at all, no." Now that one was a blatant lie if one was considering it in the context of her job as a whole. She enjoyed a great deal of fun on her assignments and missions. In matters concerning the labs, however, she frequently did feel rather left out, especially given her interest in the area.
"I don't have much aptitude for anything specific, if it makes you feel any better," she said with a smile that suggested her comment was in no way self-depreciating. Another lie, that. Her talents were simply a bit too specialized to mention in the general public. "Mm, I came because I was a little ahead of schedule. My work sent me here to fetch some information from the archeology department, and since it was hot and I had the time, I thought I'd stop by the beach for a while."
She continued to fidget with the pokeball; this was as good a lead-in as any. It just needed to be said and be done with... "Actually, I was planning on stopping by Sandalwood on my way back. I thought I would give you this." She held out the pokeball for him to take, only the slightest falter rising in her practiced poker face.

"Oh, c'mon now," he said with a short wave of his hand as if to bat the thought away. "I'm sure you've got plenty of aptitude for a lot of things." Well that was an awkward sentence, now that he thought about it.. Or maybe it wasn't. For some reason, English confused him at times, despite speaking the language predominantly for.. how long now? At least ten years. He wasn't really good with dates anyway.
Her next words and actions were met with complete and blatantly obvious surprise on his part. His eyebrows rose and he looked at her curiously before his eyes slid to the ball in her hands, giving it an even more curious look. He was accustomed to giving girlfriends small presents, or them asking for larger presents - some completely uncalled for - but he wasn't really used to girls giving him gifts, especially ones he wasn't dating. Especially gifts of the living, breathing pokemon variety. Aila's gift was currently leaving him completely confused. "Really?" He said at last, copious amounts of confusion and possibly even disbelief evident on his face. "Are you sure? ..what is it?" The last question was asked as his hand half reached for it, his curiosity growing exponentially. What was a scientist without curiosity and the need to find things out?

Well, she was good at getting into places where she didn't belong. She was good at documenting, evading, and disabling security systems. She was good at deceiving others, and she was good at taking what didn't belong to her. None of these seemed very good for light conversation, and so she merely dismissed his objection with a smile and a slight shrug.
She held the ball slightly more forward to further entice him to take it. "I think you should press the release and see for yourself," she encouraged. She felt awfully silly, actually, and she hoped she was doing a good enough job of hiding it. He wouldn't like it. He wouldn't need it. He'd say as much and hand it right back to her. She was being ridiculous, and it was going to come back to haunt her. Maybe she should set up an escape in case that came to pass, as it invariably would, "You don't have to keep it, of course. If you don't like it, I mean." But Arceus she hoped he did, for the sake of her dignity if nothing else.

"You didn't have to," he said as he reached out for it, still hesitant, though she probably realized she didn't have to anyway. Oh well. With the ball in hand, he studied it once more, finally noting the sticker on it, before his thumb gently ran over the button in the middle. Well, only one way to find out what it was, so he inhaled slowly before pushing the catch.
A flash of white erupted from the ball, morphing into the dainty form of a pink Deerling. She took a moment to quickly survey her surroundings, but when she didn't recognize a single thing - save for the short human girl - she gazed up at the pair with expectant gray eyes.
It was... pink. Uh.. "I've never seen one of these before... What is it?" He asked, one eyebrow raising at how.. pink it was. All the same, he knelt down and reached out to pet its head. The Deerling lowered herself a bit and leaned backwards, four hooves planted firmly on the ground, and eyed the brown human warily. He merely stroked her head gently though, so after a moment she straightened up. His hand carefully ran over the flower on her head - was it a flower? It looked a little odd either way - and his brows furrowed. "It is a grass-type?" He didn't know any other types that would have pseudo-flowers on their heads, but you never knew with pokemon. Sometimes pokemon just didn't make sense.

Inwardly she hoped 'you didn't have to' wasn't a translation to 'I wish you hadn't.' His reaction to the thing was... questioning, it seemed. Understandable, if one had never seen one of its kind before. Aila had been vaguely bewildered by it as well.
"It's called a Deerling," she explained. "It is a grass-type, from Unova. Their appearance changes with the seasons." She had at least done cursory research on the thing - enough to know that it wouldn't learn any poison-type moves without the use of a TM and thus was of a bit less interest to Aila than the Cottonee she had chosen to keep. Remembering Inigo's research on grass-types, it had seemed a good option to entrust the little deer to his care.
"She's female," she commented, if not a bit offhandedly. An awkward pause. "Do you like her?"

"A Deerling?" He repeated, studying the creature who happily leaned into the petting, and listened closely to Aila's description of the pokemon. Awesome, a grass-type, that.. "Seriously?" He asked, eyebrows raised as he peered up at her suddenly. "They change with the seasons? How? What happens?" Did they change colors like the leaves, or did they.. did they.. do... something else? And why? Had anyone done any research on them yet? Maybe they had, hopefully he could find it. But what if no one had? Then he could. Arceus, the possibilities... "Oh, yeah, I love it!" A pause. "Her," he corrected, not having noticed her awkward pause. He wasn't one for subtleties.

"Deerling change color depending on the season. She's pink now because it's spring, and when it's summer she'll turn green." It was an interesting phenomenon; to her knowledge, no other pokemon had ever exhibited similar characteristics. "Its evolved form, Sawsbuck, has antlers that mimic tree branches in the way they change with the seasons. I believe a lab in Unova is researching the cause, but from what I've read, they aren't making a great deal of progress." There had been quite a bit of reading regarding that particular species, but Aila had made sure to review all of it before giving the Deerling to Inigo. It was unbecoming to present a pokemon about which she knew nothing.
She folded her arms behind her back, still feeling a bit silly, though not as much knowing that he was happy with it. "I'm glad." She regarded the Deerling, "This is your trainer." It seemed polite to inform the thing of what was going on, after all.

"Qué excelente," he murmured as he listened and continued to pet the little pokemon, green eyes focused on her pink coat. So she did change colors with the seasons.. "What colors for fall and winter?" And her evolved form sounded freakin' sweet. Antlers that mimicked tree branches? He wasn't too sure what that meant but he had a pretty good idea, and knew the first thing he'd do when he got home.
"Eee?" The little Deerling trilled, peering up at Aila. She'd heard that word before, of course, so that meant this male person was her trainer? Okay, she could live with that. And the pettings.
Leilani crooned happily as she leaned down to sniff at the little pink pokemon. Pink!
Dimitri, on the other hand, wanted nothing to do with any of them - he was completely unimpressed with their behavior - and had wandered a little ways off and was currently occupied with studying the sand. Or perhaps something on it, as he meandered around in no particular or specific direction, occasionally picking up small items of.. something that was hard to see from that distance. All of whatever he was picking up seemed thoroughly unacceptable because, after a few moments of intense scrutinizing, he'd fling the whatever-it-was over his shoulder and look for more.

"Fall is represented by orange, and winter by brown," she responded. "One of the best theories right now," because who didn't love a good theory? "is that, despite its animal-like appearance, Deerling is more flora than fauna, so it reacts to the seasons the same way trees do. The problem with this is that the more flora-like pokemon like Bellsprout and Oddish don't have similar properties, making Deerling an oddity no matter how you look at it." Her volume began a steady decrease from halfway through her explanation, doubting that Inigo wanted to listen to her ramble about research that he could very well do himself.
"If you're interested," she said with a partial shrug, "I have another Unova grass-type with me as well, a Cottonee." Hopefully she wasn't being too presumptuous in assuming he'd like to see it. The Snivy didn't appear to want to be too sociable, so Aila felt a strange need to fill in for it somehow.

"Really? That's so awesome," he said with a broad grin, stroking the small deer's head more. She really was cute. Contrary to Aila's thoughts, the one thing Inigo loved was hearing people ramble about research or anything plant or grass-type related. At the mention of another grass-type from Unova, however, he brightened even more (if that were even possible). "Oh, I'd love to see it! A Cottonee?" Unsurprisingly, he'd never heard of it before, but he had a feeling after he saw it, he'd want one for himself. He loved grass-types, after all, and they helped his research immensely.
Dimitri was never social, and he continued to wander around the beach in search of the perfect whatever-it-was that he was still looking for. So far he hadn't found any perfect ones yet, as he was still carelessly flinging all of them over a shoulder after an intense period of scrutinizing.
