"Well, <********>" swore Tallulah, who nearly never swore, so this was a big deal. "I'm the beard. The big bushy beard. Like a lumberjack. I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay. No I'm not. God damnit, I'm the beard."
Way to make your best friend doubt the last year and a half of her life, Dani.
There was a knock on the door, and Tallulah bolted upright. She stared at the door. "Is someone in there with you, Lu?" called Angus.
Tallulah glanced at Dani, then back to the door. "It's just Dani, Dad. She came in through the window."
The door creaked slowly open. Angus, in his bathrobe and pajamas, looked in for a moment, and then nodded at the two girls. This didn't look like something he wanted to intervene with. "Well, good night," he said. The door shut.
Tallulah looked at her friend once more and wrapped her in a hug. "Because you've been through a lot today and you're tired and you dated him for over a year," she sighed, stroking the younger girl's hair. All this did was make her dread what was looking more and more like an impending breakup.
Except how did you break up with someone who it seemed like you were destined to be with?
"Dani... what if... in the memories I saw on Europa, I - past me, I mean - I was with him?"

This was definitely something that Angus didn't want to get involved in. The fact that it was the middle of the night and Dani had broken into his daughter's room was one thing, but had he known the actual circumstances -- a proposal and a break-up -- well, it was just thoroughly not the kind of thing that most men wanted to deal with. Dani respected that, and it's why she hadn't gone running to see Grayson. No, she'd wanted to talk to a girl, and she'd wanted to get a female perspective on how batshit crazy her ex-boyfriend had been.
Dani leaned against Tallulah, sniffling and generally feeling sorry for herself while her best friend lamented the fact that her boyfriend was probably a homosexual. As far as Dani was concerned, it seemed to be the only logical solution, unless he had like, tiny man junk and was embarrassed about it. She considered relating this idea to Tallulah, but before she could, her friend threw her a curve ball.
Dani hadn't been back to her asteroid, herself, yet. She had no idea what kind of past life memories were waiting for her, and frankly, she wasn't sure she wanted to know. Except maybe she did -- that would be a wonderful distraction from her actual life, and she was curious to know what kind of existence Magellan had entertained. Maybe she'd do that later.
For now, though -- "I don't think past life has any bearing on, like, your life now. Not really."
She shrugged, shoulder moving against Tallulah's. "Like sure. Maybe you fell in true love and got married and had a million kids a million years ago. But that was Europa then, right? You're Tallulah now, and you were awakened into Europa. You didn't live your whole life as Europa. And you've got like, this entire world full of people. So I don't think you necessarily have to hook up with the same person you did in a past life."
She mused on it a moment, then revisited her earlier thought. "And anyway, maybe Jaimie's not gay. It seems really likely, but maybe not. Maybe he just has a tiny p***s or something." Dani said this completely straight-faced, not embarrassed in the least. "Apparently it's a huge deal to guys, or something."

Tallulah picked up a pillow and chucked it at her friend. "Daniela Rymner, you are going to hell," she giggled, and tried very hard to not imagine, well, any of this. Because, frankly she didn't want to.
"Okay, I mean, I don't even know if we actually got together or not, I haven't looked around enough, it just kinda seemed like we did, I saw us dancing and I felt kind of warm about it, but seriously, I don't know what to do, and aughhh-"
She grabbed the pillow defensively back and pressed it over her own face to muffle her frustrated groan. She lay there for a while, steeping in her own mess of stress and confusion. Then, slowly, Tallulah pulled the pillow away from her face. "Maybe I did something wrong. I mean, is that possible?"
"And, um, do you want me to break out the air mattress?"

Dani considered the offer of the air mattress, decided against it. If she stayed the night she would have to call her parents to let them know where she was, and if she did that then they would want to know why she'd left so late, and that was just a big mess she didn't want to have to deal with. It was one thing to sneak out in the middle of the night and be back before they got up for work, but she hadn't even brought her personal cell phone with her tonight. She had no alarm and there was the chance that she'd sleep in past her scheduled waking time, and that would just screw her up for the entire day.
"No, I'll be leaving soon. I just wanted someone to talk to." She rubbed her face again, sighed. "Anyway, whatever. I don't think you can do anything wrong when it comes to sex. My first time was with Parker and he didn't have any complaints."
But man, she was getting really tired of talking about Parker. She'd thought that was what she wanted to do when she showed up, but she realized that was just allowing herself to wallow and she wasn't going to get anywhere.
The only problem was, she didn't know what she wanted to talk about besides.
"Maybe I'll take a trip to Magellan." She looked down at her knees, frowned. "You get memories? That's kind of creepy."

"Yeah, well, clearly you can do stuff wrong and I did," answered Tallulah, only half-sour by this point. It was hard to remain in a bad moon for long with Dani around. So much so that she didn't want her friend to leave - surely she'd just sink into a horrible, stress-fueled depression if she did.
But, Dani was edging to make her way out and Tallulah didn't feel particularly compelled to stop her. More trouble than it was worth, don't mind me, I'll just be wallowing in my own patheticness for the rest of the nigh and--
"Yeah, you get memories," confirmed Tallulah, looking up from the thread she was picking out of her comforter. "It is a little creepy. I always feel like I'm trespassing. But you should still go."
She rolled over and leaned against Dani. "Do it," she said. "Doooooo it."

She probably would. More than anything, Dani hated knowing there was something out there that she didn't have access to. If they were her own damn memories, she ought to head out and explore her homeworld, see what was going on. The idea of not having been originally born on earth was kind of creepy, though. Like she was some kind of interloper or something. Sure, Daniela Rymner had been born on earth, but apparently her soul hailed from somewhere across the galaxy. Calling an asteroid home! Weird.
Well, she couldn't go back to stay, but she could go visit.
"I think I will," she said, rising. She cast a glance to the window, back to Tallulah. "But I've got to get home. Didn't tell my parents I was going out."
She reached over and patted her friend's shoulder, trying for an encouraging smile. It was a little tight around the edges and the effect was definitely lessened by red-rimmed eyes, but the effort was there. "Call me, okay?"

"Sure thing," replied Tallulah, flashing a quick thumbs-up before sliding the window open. She glanced down at the slightly trampled rosebush and winced. "Be careful on your way out," she said. "Or Dad's gonna kill me."
She turned back to her friend and gave her a quick hug. "Thanks for coming over." even if it had been unplanned and uninvited, it had been good to talk. As if Dani had a sixth sense for when people needed to get things off their chests.
"Careful of the bushes." Tallulah helped her friend out the window. "Text when you get home." it was a bit mother hennish, but Dani had already been fake-dead once, and there were youma and officers about. The last thing you wanted was to send someone into danger.
But, she reminded herself, Magellan was super-ranked. She could clearly take care of herself. (Tallulah still wanted her to text.)
