"The brood is a collective term for young plague doctors. We are communally spawned and raised, with no pair of adult plague doctors claiming ownership or parenthood of any child at any point."
It stilled, a bit, at the next question. "Celeste... no. It was too stubborn. The elders punished it. I imagine it perished in the swamps outside the Casa..." Malodore shook its head. "I ensured my own defiance was better hidden, and pre-meditated. And I ran away before they could take me."

Calder looked at Malodore in a different way than he did before, ears perked and downright stunned he'd do such a thing. It wasn't unnatural to hear, considering there were plenty of his kind that were judged by the elders. Had been. "Your elders sound like my elders. Our clan leaders do the same thing. Well, the whole judging thing. We can live in a swamp. That's a picnic, and the elders for us are no picnic. Trampling is one thing, or..." He touched his throat, pressing the reign inside his scarf against his Adam's Apple. "....give their reign to a owner." The very thought made him pale.
He looked back up at him. "...or you're banished to the outskirts of the herd. You're still in the clan but.............." He looked down, looking at the plaid that said he was part of the Devon clan, but only barely. ".......that.happened to my mom." He guessed Malodore wouldn't know much about parents, which was a shame.
He reached down, moving a chair where he thought he saw a leech and noticed it was just a snail. Seemed the leeches were inviting a few friends over.
"So....you can't go back to your group? Aren't you scared to be on your own?" He said, looking over his shoulder. "Will the elders try and find you?"

Malodore shook its head. "I left the Casa. They will not leave it, not even to pursue me. I am garbage to them, not worth considering. And I do not want to go back." Its beak opened in a small smile. "I like it better here, on the outside. Freedom is more than worth not going back."

Calder stood back up, a pair of leeches in hand. "That's true. Freedom is priceless." It was the whole philosophy of his kind after all. "So I guess you're free to do and be whatever you want now. Even come here to Amityville. Glad for it." He pulled his scarf about the collar to let two leeches snuggle in it against his neck. "I got to meet you after all."

Malodore was taken aback by the kelpie's assertion - but in a good way. "Grazie - I am glad to have met you as well. And your little ones," it added, crouching and holding out one claw to tickle a leech. "They remind me of the good parts of my former home. The bits worth remembering."
The plague doctor scooped up the leech and straightened, holding it out to Calder. "I think this is all of them. I will miss them... but I am glad I could tend to them for you. If not, I would not have met you. Or, at least, I would not have met you in as favorable circumstances." It looked sheepish for a moment. "I do not understand why Riley is so harsh to you. You are a fine kelpie, and a good friend to Christof."
And Jack knew the patchwork needed all the help he could get... especially lately, it seemed.

The little leech in Malodore's palm suctioned itself to the creatures fingers, looking hesitant to leave. Calder went over, petting it with a single finger. "..And I don't understand what you see in Riley. You're too good for her, Malley." He smiled, and placed his hand back, leechless.
"That little one seems keen on you. Can't say I wouldn't know why. I think it should stay here. Maybe make your new home feel a bit like the one you left - but in a good way." He added, and now heavier with a colony of leeches on his person, he headed to the door. "We need to hang out more, Mal. You've been a good friend. Oh, and if you ever decide to find someone better, message me. I'll help you land a better date than Noodle Head." He teased, and waved a little ta-ta before opening the door.

Malodore shook its head, amused. "I'm rather fond of Riley, and I do believe I will keep her, grazie. But I will continue to be fond of you as well.... friend."
The word had ceased to sound quite as strange in its beak as it once had, but the plague doctor still marveled at it a little bit. Just a little. The leech clung to its claw and inched up its wrist a bit, tucking itself under the edge of Malodore's sleeve. "Shall I bring it over to visit, sometime?" It could feel the leech nomming lightly on its metallic flesh, there. Just in an affectionate sort of way; there was no way any normal leech could breach the skin in that area.

Calder lingered by the door. "Well, can't say you aren't taking a bullet for all boil-kind by taking her off the market. You deserve a medal just for that." He tried not to snicker. "...but you can come over whenever. Leech or not. In fact, us boils need to all hang out together sometime. That should be fun." Both because he never had just hanged out with Malodore with others, and because presenting it as a boil's night out would keep Riley from entering into the mix. Ghoulfriend of Malodore's or not, he did not want to see her. EVER! He was still too traumatized by the lake event that he'd probably shiver just looking at her!
"Till then!" And with that, the light-hoofed keplie slipped out with a flick of it's silver tail.
