Adi'sa had to smile at the friendly, old face lookng back at him.

"Water! Yes please elder," he said with some relish. He hadn't had a drink from clean water for days, and explained his somewhat scragyy and flat looking fur and mini-mane.

Just at that moment, Adi'sa's stomach also rumbled. He shrunk back a little, emabrrassed about the bodily function that was loud in the silent space between them.

Tawa'di gave a warm smile, and a deep nod. "Then water first, as it is. Then perhaps we can find some food...it's quite hard for one such as I to hunt, but perhaps we can find something for you."
He slowly padded along, walking towards the path that would take them to the giant, strong river that split their lands in half. The water was dangerous, always filled with such strange beasts, but if they were careful enough, they would be able to get enough water, and be on their way towards the StarGrove, hopeful to find something to eat.

The young rusty red lion looked at the elder, his broad smile saying more than his words could at the moment. Despite having always been polite and raised with good manners and being eloquent with his words, the brief haunting of his soul had left his mind somewhat numb, and able only to respond much like a cub would. Short and to the point.

He padded alongside the elder, silent for a while, keeping his ears perked forward for the sound of salvation - running water. And, truth be told, he was just lost for words. If his mother had been here, she would have nudged him many times by now for being impolite and for trusting an unknown lion.

But Adi'sa had a feeling deep down that Tawa'di posed no threat. It wasn't the lions obvious old age that was the giveaway, but something much deeper. As if they both shared something in common.

Adi'sa's eyes grew wide in a strange combination of hope, excitement and pure greed. The river. He could hear it, just barely, but he could. So, instincts took over, and he began to bound ahead of the elder.

Tawa'di gave a hearty laugh as the juvenile bounced in front of him, sure that everything would be alright. The Ela'wadiyi lands were always quiet, so why would that change suddenly? He kept at his pace, but did his best to keep the younger lion in his sights. His normal eyesight was shallow, but with his nvwati skills mixed in with his seer abilities, he could sense things from farther off. And everything seemed fine.

A few mice scattered off from where Tawa'di's feet touched the ground, their little families running from the danger that supposidly was in front of them. Much like when the Ela were forced away from their old home by the DarkFire pride...those memories were still fresh in Tawa'di's mind. It made him uncomfortable angry when he brought up those memories, so he struggled to keep them down as the view of the river came in sight. It seemed lower then it should be, the waters much calmer then they normally were. Better, for then they could cross it easier and reach the StarGrove.

Adi'sa forgot all common sense as the river came clearly into view and only a few paw-paces ahead. From somewhere, he summoned some strength to surge faster towards what his body craved most. All thoughts of the Elder, and how he might struggle to keep view of him, had floated straight out of his skull and were carried away on the breeze.

SPLISH. SPLOSH.

Adi'sa's sore paws almost burned in the water, his dry cracked paw pads suddenly submerged in life-giving water. The waters were calm, almost still, but flowed just enough to make the water fresh.

The youngster sunk his head into the shallow river and just hung his mouth agape, letting water rush in and down his gullet. Then he pulled his head from the water, throwing his developing mane-fluff back with a flick. And then he did something all together odd.

Adi'sa, 'he who will teach', flopped into the river and rolled himself around, coating every dry hair of fur in water. He kicked up some silt, but it wouldn't matter, he emerged soon after, not wishing to have thick, heavy waterlogged fur to burden him. He shook himself of excess and felt so fresh, almost like a new lion.

He stood at the water's edge and waited for the elder to catch up. Still shaken inside from his ordeal, no one could tell to look at him.

Tawa'di watched a little blur of lion run down the banks into the river. Ahh, he must have found it, the Amanzim'tsetse. The ancient lion gave a chuckle as he slowly followed suite, noticing the antics of the other by his side. Having one so young around him gave the lion a bit of youthful energy as well.

He dipped his head down to drink, the water sweet and pure as it was named. After a great mouthful after mouthful of water, the lion craned his neck up, water dripping from his wet maw. He turned to the little Adi'sa.

"Feeling better, little son?"

The little living knowledge-sponge looked up at the elder, his mane still dripping in places, and his feather-earring, unfortunately, quite matted and dirty still. If he couldn't see about cleaning it well enough, Adi would have to enquire about a replacement. He was still unaware of the significance of his heritage, at least until he would begin his lessons with Tawa'di.

"Oh much better, elder," he beamed. He looked across the stretch of water. "We have to cross here?"

Tawa'di nodded off down the river as he spoke. "There is a place to cross just down there. If we are careful, we can pass with great ease. Thankfully the river is very gentle today." He looked back towards Adi'sa, and smiled. "Hopefully we will find some food once we cross the river."

He slowly made his way towards the river crossing, his own body feeling mroe youthful with a good fill of water. "I am glad that you are feeling better, little son. The waters always give life, and it seems yours has been renewed."

Adi'sa regarded the elder's words with concentrated silence, listening and then following the old lion down the river's edge. His paws met with cool moist earth, and already they began to feel plumped up and less painful to walk on.

"Mother always taught us about how precious water is, how it nourishes the body as well as the soul. Do the waters have spirits in them?" he asked, his youthful need for knowledge now starting to creep out of him as he grew less shy.

As Tawa'di kept his pace, he nodded towards the juvenile, thinking that with a fresh mind, he could start teaching this young one. What harm was in telling a young one of stories, of things Tawa'di knew? Knowledge was a useful skill, and could greatly help him in life.

"Yes, there are many spirits in the water, as there are spirits everywhere. Being kind to them, and to what you take is important. If you anger the spirits, things may turn against you, if not immediately, at the point when you need their help the most."

That might of been a bit much all at once, so the ancient lion laid quiet and simply padded on, letting the words sink into the little Adi'sa.

Adi'sa stopped briefly, looking back at the area where he'd dunked himself in the waters. He sincerely hoped he hadn't squashed any of the spirits. And then a different thought hit him that he simply couldn't keep to himself.

"Does that mean I've just drank some spirits and they're swimming around inside me?" he asked bluntly. If he had, that wasn't likely to make the spirits happy.

"And that must mean there can be bad spirits too, right?"
PostPosted: Tue Mar 28, 2006 4:02 pm

Tawa'di laughed. "No, no, not quite like that. Spirits are much smarter then fish. They will watch you and what you do, and if you are good, will reward you. It may be hard to tell when they do, but sometimes they can put a little bit of energy into what they give you....like the water." He nodded. "They perhaps gave a little of that energy towards the water you bathed in, renewing your energy. Perhaps they are happy that you are home now, Adi'sa."

Tawa'di hummed over his words before answering the last question of the juvenile's. "And spirits aren't quite 'good', and aren't quite 'bad'. Some may be more giving then others, as some may be more tricky then others, but it's mainly how you respect them that matters the most. It is rare to come across a genuinely bad or good spirit."

The youngster absorbed the information being fed to him, and although he could not process it fully yet, it would hide somewhere in his head until he had quiet time to think it all over.

"So what is special about the Stargrove?" he changed the subject now, his mind racing at a million miles per hour. He had many questions, most of which would have answers that would confuse or frighten him.

Tawa'di laughed inside at all the questions that Adi'sa was asking him. What energy and interest! It was quite a change from Tawa'di Kanati's life, and he welcomed in with open arms.

"The Stargrove is a special place where nvwati go. It is the place that is normally visited by gods, if they are willing to show themselves to us. It's a very special place for me, one of the first places I visited when we found these new lands....I'm sure you will like it, little son."

Adi'sa stopped in his tracks for a moment, looking at the aging lion as he lead the way across the river. The Gods?! They're real? His imagination got the better of him, and ran away with thoughts of these almighty gods descending from on high to bestow good fortune and magical abilities to normal lions. A wide grin formed on his face, and he quickly caught up to Tawa'di. Maybe the Gods will give me something...

The rusty little lion still could not fight his hunger however, and tried to banish his belly rumblings to the back of his mind until they at least saw something small he could grab with his paws.
