Oh no, she sniffled! Rei cursed himself, thanking the Gods that he wasn’t a father (oh, the irony!) because he’d probably do a terrible job at it. She said she didn’t want his help now? Did that mean she’d wanted it before? Was she actually in the tree? Was that what all the pouncing talk was about?
“Please, please, don’t be sad. I really didn’t want to make you sad.” He placed his front paws on the tree trunk, raising his body to its full height. “It doesn’t really matter. Forget I said stupid things. Look, to make for it, I’ll just stay here and let you pounce on me, okay? You can drop on me hard as you want or you can just jump on my head and I’ll bring you down, okay? How’s that?”

Dru sniffled again and looked down at the fluffy male. She couldn't really stay in a tree, because even if the birds did bring her food, it wouldn't be enough. But she really want to be saved by a meany?
"How do I know you're not a strangerdanger? Strangerdangers are mean, but act all nice until they can do bad things like cubnap or, or, or hit you." Maybe being in her tree was safer, even if it wasn't practical. She could always cry for Mom and Auntie Keene. She'd never hear the end of it from her sisters and brothers, but she would get down safely. And she'd eventually get back up in a tree to pounce better. Even if they teased her endlessly about being stuck in a tree, Dru had every intention on learning how to climb, pounce from, and climb down out of trees.

“If I was hum…strangerdanger, I’d just climb up and take you away myself. I can climb you know…I just haven’t done it since I fell and got hurt the last time.” And he really didn’t want that to happen to such a little cub. “I promise I won’t hurt you. I didn’t try to steal your sister so I won’t try to steal you either. But if you’re still not sure, you can just tell me where the adults are so I can tell them you’re here…?” Not that Rei wanted to meet the famous warrior lioness all these cubs talked about but he had to do something about the girl on the tree!

Sniffled. He didn't try to cubnap Mura. Obviously, cause he was still able to breath and walk. Mom would have pulverized him, big fluffy male or not. Sniffled. And she really didn't want Mom or Auntie Keene to find out about this.
"You promise you're not a strangerdanger?" She muttered softly, trying to control her sniffling. "Show me you tail is not twisted and your claws aren't crossed!" She demanded a little stronger. Anyone could make promises, and then have something crossed or twisted so they can lie.

“I promise.” Rei said very seriously, showing his tail to the cautious little girl. It seemed she might just end up trusting him. But Gods, the sniffling! He couldn’t stand it especially considering that he was the cause of it – well, sort of. He should’ve known better than to go around asking callous questions.
He almost asked her not to cry but he stopped himself in time. In this situation maybe saying less was better than saying the wrong thing… again.

Dru stared down at him. He seemed serious, showing her his tail and claws. Nothing was twisted or crossed, so he couldn't break his promise. She sniffled again, but her sniffling was slowing down with the possiblity of getting down out of the tree. Maybe she could find a leopard that would teacher how to climb trees. "Okay," Dru agreed softly.
She stood on the branch, which was higher than before because she had climbed it to hide from the him when he was being mean. So it was very much higher to her eyes. Dru went into pounce position, bottom and tail raised, head and shoulders down and pounced aiming for his shoulders. She landed on his head. "Thank you," Dru said even more softly now that she was on the stranger. On his head. She needed to practice her aim.

Rei was pretty sure this wasn’t the best moment to point out that not having his tail crossed wasn’t a very good indicator of honesty but he knew better that to hinder the girl’s descent. He still felt tempted though and he hoped her family members would be able to explain it to girl once she told him what had happened today.
His jaw closed with a loud thud as her small body fell on his head and the orange lion suppressed a grunt with difficulty. He lowered his body to the ground very slowly and waited for her to jump down.
“There you are. Safe and sound!” He gave the cub a bright see-you-are-on-the-ground-but-I-am-not-attacking-you smile. “Is there anything else you need?” Please say no. Please say no.

Dru jumped down off his head and blushed. That was a really bad landing. Even for a first pounce from a tree. She hoped she didn't hurt him, he wasn't Mom after all. She felt very shy all of the sudden but she needed to thank him properly. At his question, Dru shook her head. "What's your name? I'm Dru."

“It’s nice to meet you, Dru. I’m Rei.” Well, whaddya know? She wasn’t sniffling anymore and he actually got a name out of her. Now that she was right in front of him, he noticed her interesting yellow markings. The other cub didn’t have those, he was quite certain of it. “Well, I should be going now. Tell your sister I didn’t mean to scare her, okay?” This made him feel a lot better about the whole encounter even if they’d had a terrible start. Maybe next time he’d do a little better.

Dru gave Rei a shy smile. "Hello." She measured the distance to his head. He was tall, but he was still facing her. She could make it if she stood on her back paws.
Quickly so he wouldn't be able to take a step back and upset her balance, Dru pushed her front paws off the ground and put them on his shoulders. She licked his cheek like she saw Auntie Keene do to her brothers and to her male. So, that had to be a good thank you. "Thank you, Rei!" She put all paws on the ground and started to jog off.
"Okay. I'll tell her!" Dru jogged at first but it became a speed thing quickly. Not that she was running away from Rei (when she kind of was running away from him and her embarrassment), but she was running home. They would have missed her and she needed to get back. And find a leopard to teach her how to hunt from a tree properly.

Her shy smile made the adult feel a lot better about the whole encounter. Maybe next time he’d do a little better. Surely he’d learn how to give a proper first impression that didn’t involve threats or tears someday. He did want to be a father eventually, maybe even settle down. Just not right away…
Her gesture took him by surprise and it was with a great amount of effort that he managed not to recoil at her touch. He smiled more gently as he watched the cub run off feeling a familiar warmth filling his body. It was similar to how Rei felt when he was around Mzuza… drat! He was trying not to think about her. The orange lion sighed and waited until the cub was out of sight before turning around and slowly walking away. - FIN -
