As See stepped closer to him, Thoushalt could see her excitement overpower her fear -- or her portrayed fear -- and he smiled once again. An interesting lady, this was, full of mysteries he appreciated. Thou was beyond his own facades now, beyond hiding his delight in the animals and his own abilities with them behind his stiff chivalry. This doe had seen fit to let him in, at least a little, and he felt comfortable enough to do the same for her. He hoped, with a slight tinge of worry, that his comfort would not backfire. See didn't seem the type to laugh at him for talking to the snakes anyway, even if she -- like most others he met -- didn't believe it.

"Come out, little one, I promise it is safe,"
he said, turning back over his shoulder and nudging the branch of one of the overhanging cypress trees. There was a soft rustle from among the leaves and then a quiet hiss before -- with a soft thump -- a small watersnake dropped from the branch and onto Thoushalt's waiting back.

Looking back and forth between the snake and the doe, Thou felt his chest swell with pride at the match. The little snake's underbelly was an almost perfect match for the soft green along See's back, not to mention the pink splotches and the gold that quite nearly imitated the color of See's shining hair. "Come," Thou said, gesturing towards All I See with his antlers. "She won't bite."

One look was all it took, as the delicate creature landed daintily on Thou's back, for See to fall in love. Half in response to the buck's gentle command, half in thrall to the irresistable force that drew all her will, mesmerised, to the little snake, she approached - soft steps, hushed, almost reverent.

She was beautiful...neat little scales, soft gold and flushed pink, glittering finely in the honeyed sunlight, the pale green of her belly lush against Thou's purple fur. When it raised its tiny head towards her with a questioning tilt, for the first time she could remember, she felt her heart go out, entire, to a life outside of her own.

"Oh, she's beautiful," she sighed the thought out loud, "does...does she have a name?"

Thou watched the doe fall in love with the little snake in just moments and felt his heart swell with happiness. "All the animals have names they call each other, yes," he replied, stepping a bit closer to See so the little snake could inspect her closer. "But they are in the creatures' own languages and not something we can pronounce or translate." He tilted his head at the little snake, smiled at her. "If she accepts you as her companion, however, she will answer to a new name that you can choose for her."

"Will you come with me, then?" See murmured to the little creature as she lowered her head to meet her eye-to-eye, charmed by the curious flickering of that tiny tongue moving ever closer till it just tickled the tip of her nose. With a soft laugh of delight, she broke away and pressed her body - oh, quite unselfconsciously... - against Thou's, that the snake might...

...Yes, slither steadily over to coil upon her back. "I suppose that's a yes?" she laughed again, eyes shining at Thoushalt, "oh, tell me - does she say yes?"

Thou, ever the gentleman, made no comment as See's body pressed against his -- though a soft blush did spread across his face. He stepped away (though, admittedly, not too far away) from her as the snake slithered across onto her back.

"You are a lovely pair," he laughed happily, the doe's pleasure infectious. He dragged his eyes away from See's and looked at the little snake, his head tilted. The snake raised itself up a little to look at him and hissed, softly, flicking out its tongue. "Oh yes, yes of course she does, and she asks if she may slither under your hair, as it looks so soft, and wonders what her new name is to be, please." Thoushalt was surprised at himself, letting his barriers down for this doe -- normally he was much more self-conscious about revealing his ability to talk with animals to other kimeti...they were so often skeptical and cruel.

"She does!" she repeats, delighted, "my hair? Of course, she owns me now, she can do anything she wants. Her name..."

Normally she would have been very alarmed - and not a little displeased - to have her impeccably styled hair thoroughly undone in front of a handsome buck, but her heart already belonged to the little snake entire...and a part of her, still calculating, sensed that this particular handsome buck might already have crossed that threshold, if he'd even have cared in the first place. And besides, all other parts of her were instead united in joy, uncharacteristically heedless of her usual veils. She swayed lightly in thought as the snake slid beneath her gleaming locks, then above to twine about her horns.

"I shall call her..." she said, ruminatively, "I shall call her -" as the snake slithered downwards again, curling around her nape. She turned, craning her neck to glimpse the tiny creature who never stopped moving - completed a circle, circled again. "I shall call her First Blush," she finally decided, with a bubbly laugh, "because at First Blush you were already completely wonderful," she said to the little snake, then finally stepped to a stop, gazing at Thoushalt, all smiles and whimsy, "and so were you."

Thoushalt's cheeks burst into a flurry of pink at See's words, proving the name embarrassingly accurate. "I...you...well." He cleared his throat and ducked his head a bit to regain his composure away from the beautiful doe's watchful eyes, and came back up all gentlemanlyness and composure. "You're the one who is full of wonder, See," he replied, the blush still faint upon his cheeks. "I am very grateful to have met you...and I'm sure First Blush is too."

The edge of knowing flitted about her smile as Thou ducked his head - the flush across his cheeks proved it then, he was already well within her grasp. Everything had fallen into place in one lovely evening: a handsome buck, her beautiful snake...but, oh! Why spoil it now with thoughts of plots and schemes? For the first time since she had left off her childish ways as a foal and grown learned of the ways of the world, See chose to cast off wile and reveal in pure joy. It would be different tomorrow, but for now, she was truly happy. By the time the buck returned his gaze, her smile was genuine.

"And I am very grateful to have met both of you," she said, and meant it.

The smile on See's face caused Thoushalt's stomach to flip. There was something different about the doe's expression this time -- something intense, honest. In an attempt to hide his blush, Thou moved back towards the entrance of the grove and pushed the curtain of vines aside so that See could pass back through. "You are very kind. I'm sure First Blush will be quite happy with you, See. Is..." he stumbled over his tongue, swallowed, tried again. "Is there anything else I can help you with?"

"Oh, you've already done so much," she started automatically, before her cover story suddenly flickered back into her mind - it seemed like an age ago that she had crafted that easy lie, but now it sounded more like an appealing plan; dinner would be nice...even moreso with her benefactor, "but...I was looking for a berry patch. Might you be hungry too?"

Thoushalt had almost completely forgotten the original reason for the doe's appearance, but at the mention of berries he realized that he was indeed hungry. Hopefully the fluttering in his stomach would calm enough for him to keep some food down.

"There is nothing I would like better than to share some berries with you, See," Thou replied, true sincerity showing through his gentlemanly manner. "In fact... the buck leaned in towards where First Blush was settling in on All I See's back and cocked an ear to the little snake, no longer worried about the doe making fun of him for speaking to the animal. "...Blush says that there is a patch not too far from here, next to a lovely little stream whose banks are covered with soft moss." Thou's eyes flicked back toward See's, gleaming with pleasure at the discovery of such a perfect place. "She has told me the way. Would you like to follow me there, See?"

"That sounds delightful!" she replied, turning her head to marvel at her little snake and the knowledge she held, "I would love to follow you" anywhere "there."

She liked Thoushalt, she really - really - did. It would not last forever, nothing ever did for her, it might not even last a day - but as they trotted off towards the promised patch together, she resolved to enjoy their time together to the utmost, just the two of them, and her beautiful snake...they might well be her happiest days.
