As far as I have found, officially they died. Amuro definitely dies, as well as killing a whole bunch of other mobile suit pilots when he tries to stop the asteroid colony from crashing to Earth. The Psychoframe system in his Gundam causes a huge explosion.

Is that anything like the Zero System in the Winged Gundam?
Or is it just some kind of weird explodey metal?

No, it is an advanced control system for the Nu Gundam. Unfortunately there were some unforseen side effects from Amuro's newtype abilities being too strong.
