As he spotted the luxury ball Frost raised an eyebrow, a slight smile tugging at his lips for just a moment. Reaching inside his jacket he took his own luxury ball from an inner pocket and tossed it up into the air once, catching it and declaring - "Snap," before putting it away in one of his trouser pockets. "Mine is a Glaceon," he added, choosing not to mention the other pokemon he had with him, "and I do a fair amount of battling... What is yours for, if not battles? Is it a pet? A particularly extravagant lighter?... That last was a joke." You didn't see too many other luxury balls around; they were really rather expensive, and not desperately easy to come across in the first place. Limited release or something like that, probably to keep the price up. He had felt it a bit of a waste that Dith had bothered to get Skiron in a one, but frivolous or not he had to admit he liked the style.

Passingly Luke noted that between the two luxury balls, Mieu had a type advantage. He had neither want nor expectation of a battle, but it was always worth noting when something of his was better than something of someone else's. He scowled at the suggestion that the Flareon was a pet, shaking his head in dissent. "Hell no, who would keep such an annoying pet?" Well, that did leave the question of what Mieu was for. He grumbled to himself, awkwardly shifting his hands into his pockets.

"It's really kind of lame..." Ugh, whatever. He didn't really have any reason to dislike the guy, and he could always deny having said it if it came up later, "I left home, and I didn't want to be by myself, so I brought the stupid thing with me." He made a point of fixing his gaze firmly to the side, folding his arms in a stance that attempted to suggest he had done so for the Flareon's benefit rather than for his own. As if he was scared of being left alone on that huge island... Yeah right.

"That is only human," Frost replied after a brief pause, "it is human because humans did not evolve as solitary animals. We are designed to live in tribes. A lone human is vulnerable - this fact is hard-wired into all of our brains - and so it is natural that when setting out to a strange place you would wish to have familiar company, even if it is only a pokemon you find rather annoying."

Humm... Why wasn't the boy looking at him? He wasn't aware of having said anything offensive. Maybe he was embarrassed; using the word 'lame' did imply that he had some negative feelings about his reasons for bringing the Flareon. He did look young. Not as young as many who wandered around the world with only pokemon for company but... well, they had pokemon for company. It seemed quite ridiculous to him to let little boys and girls run around with such powerful beasts at their command; how could they be expected to make sensible decisions when their brains hadn't even developed fully yet? They were a danger to themselves, and to everyone around them; what if a Charizard got out of control? He had never seen any studies on deaths and injuries related to young pokemon trainers, but he had a feeling it would make interesting reading if it were ever carried out...

Tangent.

"You left home recently?" Frost asked, focusing his attention back on the redheaded youth opposite him, and hoping that he hadn't been zoned out for too long.

"Huh... Well... I guess so." He regarded his company with a sidelong glance. Was he being pitied? Comforted? Argued against? There was certainly some truth to what the man said - Luke was of the belief that he would have lost his mind were there not others in that house to indulge him in his frequent fits of boredom. He also couldn't deny that certain feelings of vulnerability had joined him since arriving at the Camphoreon docks, increased by events to a point that he had gone in search of a weapon for a greater sense of security.

Conversely there was the discomfort of unexpected company, such as under his current circumstances. Though admittedly he was a fair bit more relaxed than he might have been if the man in the gray suit were instead the black-haired girl from the sandwich shop or the red-eyed man from the park, he was unaccustomed to strangers and largely unreceptive to their companionship. In short, he would have preferred to be alone.

The sudden question drew him out of his confusing introspection, and Luke hummed thoughtfully before replying, "Yeah. Got here a few days ago. Well, 'here' being Kodo." A shrug accompanied his words, as if the feat were altogether insignificant.

"I see... Do you like it here?" Perhaps he should just give up on conversation and stand in silence. An attempt at social interaction with a captive stranger was a unique chance though, he couldn't imagine that he would be trapped in a lift with anyone again in the foreseeable future. He should turn the inconvenience into an opportunity, attempt to behave more or less like a normal human being. "I moved here a few months ago," the pale-eyed man added, feeling that a normal person would probably offer personal information like this freely, "and I am finding it acceptable so far. This city is certainly... diverse."

"Not really," he said with another shrug and something of a sour expression. "Can't say I've had the best time since I got here. I'm not used to it, and everyone expects me to know everything." His brow furrowed at the thought. "But then no one wants to explain anything either. Talking to me like I'm stupid because I don't understand and then acting like I should know even when it's clear that I don't..." He breathed a deep sigh. "I guess it's not awful, though... It's definitely diverse." Especially when looking at the extremes of the mild-mannered Rosie versus the cold, violent girl who said she was with Team Rocket. "Guess I've just had bad luck..."

"Oh?" Frost frowned slightly. "Well that is very rude. I expected you to understand about lifts, but when it became apparent that you did not I explained. I would hope that if I did not understand something, somebody who did understand would explain to me, whether it was something mundane that I simply hadn't happened across before, or something extremely complex. Mmh. Some people around here do seem to be very rude though. A lot of pushing and shoving and general impatience and bad manners. I suppose a surly refusal to explain things would come along with that."

He couldn't understand why anyone would withhold knowledge, well, he could, but not under simple circumstances with simple non-sensitive information. Anyway, the point was that it was rude to leave somebody in the dark about something like lifts... Although he didn't know what it was that other people had refused to tell the boy. He might have wanted to know some secret password to some underground... something.

"If you have any lingering lack of knowledge I might be able to help," Frost went on, "I am familiar with this place and how it works. So long as it isn't a pop culture question I ought to have at least an inkling." It wasn't as though he had anything better to do, and it might be useful to form an off base connection.

"I didn't mean you," Luke said with a lift of a brow, as if it were perfectly obvious that the man had been excluded from his complaints. "No one else has bothered to explain anything... Not without going out of their way to make me feel stupid, anyway." A decrease in his volume perhaps alluded to a degree of gratitude that he was reluctant to admit. He would have to admit to at least a little appreciation for the gesture.

At the man's offer, his disposition became more mild, almost hesitant. He raised a hand to the back of his neck, steadfastly locking his gaze elsewhere. "Well, I mean... This is... the first time I left the house since I was really little," his tone was near mumbling, "so there's kind of a lot I don't know... I mean, I don't even really know where to begin..." By the time he finished speaking, he was definitely mumbling. Admitting a lack of knowledge or any inadequacy was not something he was quick to do under any circumstances.

"Oh." That was odd. "I see. Mmh." Where did you begin to explain the world to somebody so sheltered? How had he been so sheltered?... Well, that was an interesting question, but not of much consequence right now. "Well... Begin with arriving in the city," Frost suggested. "What things have you encountered and not understood that remain unexplained? Road crossings?... Umm... Humm. It is difficult for me to think of examples as I am so familiar with everything."

He couldn't imagine a life shut in his parents' home; the idea made his skin crawl, and his stomach knot with anger that he had to force away. No. It seemed that this boy was from a very different background. He probably came from a detached house with a garden and so on that his parents either owned or had a mortgage on. Lots of books. A really good computer. A chemistry set. The ceiling of his room painted with constellations... Or perhaps that was getting too specific. Almost certainly. Maybe when he was an Agent he would be able to paint his ceiling with the constellations... No, probably not, but he could paint them on paper and stick them up. That would be nice.

"Um, since getting here..." What was the first trouble he encountered? Trying to buy food. He had given up and had only managed to get something to eat when Rosie ordered. The chick at the sandwich shop had given him a hard time too. "Buying stuff, I guess," he muttered, unmoving from his withdrawn stance. "Ordering food or... shopping in general?" That was probably rather important to figure out, considering he was on his way to make a purchase before the whole elevator ordeal began. "And stores and stuff on the street. I mean, how are you supposed to tell if it's okay to just... walk in?" He had managed to pick up a number of nuances relating to street travel through observation and experience - such as the fact that the sidewalk was where people who didn't want to get mowed down by cars walked - but anything that required him to pass through a door made him nervous wary.

"Oh. Humm." How to explain things that, to him, were so instinctive, so obvious? "Well. Food. If you are in a restaurant where you are taken to a table by a waiter, usually they will give you a menu and then come back for your order. If you are in a place where you sit down but are left to find your own table there is usually a menu on the table, but you walk up to a bar or counter to place your order. In both instances there may be a chalk board with 'specials' on, menu items that they will have for a limited time only. In places like either of those, you will usually pay at the end of the meal, though some places where you must go up to order take money when you order. In places where sitting down is either not an option or not the focus, there are usually large boards up on the walls detailing what you can order; it is best to peruse - to read - those and make a choice whilst in line. When you get to the front you order, wait for your food, and then take it out, or if there are seats and you wish to eat it inside you can eat there."

That had been fairly comprehensive he hoped, although he hadn't covered tipping and tipping was important... Mmmh, not as important as the basics of survival though... But it would only take a moment. "Returning to restaurants you sit down in, it is customary to leave a 'tip' for your waiter, provided they have given you reasonable service. Around ten percent of your total bill is the norm, and money should be left on the table, perhaps under a plate. Mmh. Some places now give you the option to leave a tip using your credit card if you pay by card... I think that is all I can think of for ordering food."

Shopping. He wasn't much of a shopper, bit the boy's question seemed easy enough. "How to tell if you can just walk in. Mmh. By and large, if the shutters are up and lights are on you can walk in, but many shops will have a sign on the door which will read either 'open' or 'closed'. Anyway, if shops do not want people to come in but they look open, they will often either lock the doors, or have somebody stand either just outside or just inside to tell people that the store is not currently open... Did that answer your questions?" He felt that he had talked a lot, but he wasn't really sure how much useful information he had passed on. At least some, he hoped.

Luke listened quietly to the whole of the explanation, attempting to internalize the mentioned visual cues. It was a lot to take in and even more to remember for future reference, but it was presented in an organized enough manner that he felt distinctly confident in his ability to recall the information when it was necessary to do so.

"Uh, yeah," he affirmed with a nod. "I think so." It answered a fair bit more than he was expecting, actually, and he took a few moments to mentally file the information. That complete, he thought it fit to move on to another question, "So... this building. What is it exactly?" It seemed to be some sort of amalgam of stores and eateries. 'Everything one could want,' as the sign boasted. He couldn't manage to understand the innate infrastructure or purpose, though, and it was somehow overwhelming.

"Ah, this is a 'mall'," Frost made air quotes and pursed his lips slightly at the sound of the word, "mall or shopping centre. Everyone around here says mall though. Mmh. Essentially it is just a very large gathering of shops intended to a) be convenient for the shopper as almost anything you could want can be acquired here, and b) to part the shopper from as much money as possible. It is amazing the amount of effort that is poured into advertising, into making a 'rip off' seem like 'a total steal'. It is always a good idea to read the fine print of any large gaudy sign you see, there always is some."

The human mind was terribly easy to manipulate; a detached approach to life was more important than ever in a place like this. Know what you were looking for, and avoid browsing elsewhere or you would find yourself going home with... Err... Example... Ah. With a lava lamp, three shirts you hated the moment you left the shop, and a small potted cactus. That seemed like a good enough example to him, although perhaps the lava lamp was a couple of decades out of date; he couldn't remember the last time he'd seen one in a shop, but perhaps that was because he was never looking for them.
PostPosted: Wed Apr 13, 2011 11:17 am

Well that made sense; it certainly looked like a collection of shops, but the word 'mall' itself was sort of... weird. Passingly Luke wondered why it was called that, but he decided that was less than an important matter. "So you can find anything here?" Both the sign by the entrance and this stranger had suggested as much, and two for two seemed like good enough odds. A thoughtful expression spread on his face, and he crossed his arms dubiously. "But if every sign is trying to get you to buy something you don't need, how do you find what you're looking for?" Was it a futile effort? Was this 'mall' a place people went when they were bored and wanted something new no matter what it was they got? Curiouser and curiouser, as the saying went. More often than not, Luke was struck with the suspicion that the outside world was nothing but unfamiliarity...

"Mmfh," Frost shook his head, "no. Not everything. Not quite. Quite a lot of things though. As for finding what you want, there are maps. This shopping centre is quite up to the minute, so maps are electronic and operated by a touch screen. I can show you how to use one when we get out of here, it will not take long, but in brief you use a touch screen keyboard to spell out either a shop or a product you are looking for. Results will then flash up on the map. Oh, and there will be a 'you are here' marker too."

...Did the boy know how to spell? If he was from a nice but sheltered background then he probably could, but it seemed that there was no guarantee of anything with this one. Anyway if the redhead was illiterate he supposed he could spare the time to type in what he was looking for; he had all day after all, and it would be rude to leave the boy lost. Mmh. Maybe he should ask his name; it was polite to give names on meeting somebody, but on the other hand he wasn't in a rush to disclose his own. He supposed he would call himself D if asked, but there was no real need to volunteer the information; they were managing to be perfectly civil to one another without names.
