I would suggest Lisa See and Jodi Picoult. Check out Redwall by Brian Jacques. It's a children's book, but lots of fun! There's 20 of them as far as I know and Brian just died in February sadly...

I suggest Patrick Rothfuss, Robert Jordan, Tami Hoag and Jincy Willett. They're all very very good.

good lord, anything by Darren Shan, he and J.K. Rowling are the only two authors I respect enough to capitalize their names

I would definitely say LJ Smith, PC Cast, Kelley Armstrong, and Daniel Waters are good authors. Lemony Snicket is still a favorite of mine from times gone by...I would also say JK Rowling, but I just got done ranting about the things I hated about Harry Potter, so I don't think I'd feel right putting her in here.... razz . Jim Butcher is amazing as well, so is Garth Nix.
