So was the life of an impulsive doe. Slip was amused as he watched her fatigue give way to innocent curiousity, and he managed a pleasant reply despite his own sleepless exhausion. "They're fine far away, but they're thorny little things, catching on fur, scratching at skin - wading through them is prickly to say the least." He leaned over and tilted her head back up, a teasing wink. "Surely you're ready to return now then, Kiss?"

Kiss snorted and pushed his head away gently with hers. "Not a chance," she said with a grin. "Not even if we have to wade through that stuff for days!" Okay, that last bit may have been a bit of an exaggeration, but she certainly wasn't about to give up at the first sign of adversity! She was ready to keep marching as long as Slip would lead her.

Do not taunt, he filed away in his mind, blearily, that's not a smart move at all. Maybe she'd change her mind (with non-confrontational encouragement) when they stepped into the sawgrass. He lead the path again, and felt the familiar sprigs underfoot as the land transited to the plains. "First bits of sawgrass," he informed, stamping at the prickly blades. "Since we're here, you may as well dive in for a bit!" A roguish smile, and he slipped, starting and stopping from the pull of the grass, a few feet into the field.

She stepped forward, a little indignant, but ready to face the challenge. As best she could, she copied Slip's movements, but when he lived up to his name and moved ahead faster than she could follow, she had to fight through on her own. Oh, how the dratted weeds caught at her fur and hair! How the blades that slipped close pinched and cut! Gingerly, she tried treading the stalks down at the root, but even little movements tangled her up more.
The stresses of long travel and new experiences finally caught up to her, and she panicked. She wailed, "Sliiiiiiiip, this stuff is impossible! How am I gonna get through, I don't know how!"

Slip heard her call and backtracked, rustling through the tugging green. He was long used to those burrs in his fur, but evidently the poor little doe was not. "It'll take a little time," he advised, and kindly picked a stubborn blade off her knee. "Maybe you should return, it's a long way to go, Kiss, and you've done so well already." He honestly hoped it didn't come out condescending - it had already been a fairly tiring journey, and he couldn't drag her through the sawgrass in this state. Gently, he sidled up against her and with a sharp push against the grass, started to carve a little path out towards the friendlier parts of the swamp.

She let him lead her out, grateful and a little ashamed. Once they were clear, she gave a little sniffle and leaned gingerly against his side, eyes downcast. "Thank you for the help. And the guidance," she said. She continued the next part almost by rote; "It was stupid of me to try so much on my first try. Admitting the mistake makes it easier to correct it. I will rest, and retry, and get better," and glaring back at the sawgrass, she hissed, "and I will conquer the hell out of the devil-grass if it is the last thing I do." A sniff, a moment's pause, and an addendum - "But on my own time. I've used up enough of yours. Thank you again, I mean it."

He paused at her charmingly lengthy and unhappy speech...and laughed, gamely tapping her on the muzzle. " I'm sure you will, Kiss. And my time is yours to use, whenever you want. When you destroy the devil-grass, come find me, and I'll show you the sea and many other things. Now go home, little miss." He stole a peck on the cheek and disappeared back into the sawgrass, rustling away into the distance. Kitty Sprightt I hadn't realised I hadn't ended it off, sorry Corn! You can just mark Fin now or post one more to end if you'd like. Thanks!

Kiss stood and watched him until he lived up to his name and vanished from sight, and a still moment longer. Silently, she turned and began the walk home, already kind of looking forward to seeing him again.
