My thoughts on certain things

Mai's journal from this point on.

I remember when...
Mai's thoughts of her great grandfather when she was 10

Let's see, today was special. Really special in my case. Great grandpa came over with my mom- she had to pick him up from the airport. He sure knows how to spoil me. When he entered our house, he gave a big wolf howl to announce himself. I stared down the hall and my mother just shook her head.

"My noble wolf has returned!" I couldn't help but laugh as I ran into his arms. If he was a bit stronger, I'm sure he could have picked me up and threw me into the air! But this wasn't like when I was little. He was growing weaker by the year and it hurt my heart to watch him struggle. Instinctively, I helped him with his bags as we made our way to the guest room.

Once we were all in his room for the time he was staying, mom gave him a quick kiss and headed to the store. She said something about making great grandpa's favorite meal.... But I can't quite remember what it was. "So my little trickster." He turned to me, a sly smile on his face, "Can you guess what this old man has made for you this time?" Whenever my great grandpa visits, he makes me a gift. He would say that by making it, it was special and would carry a memory that we would never forget when we looked at it.

I liked the way he put it. I think it's true. Every bracelet, necklace, charm, or trinket he's made me carried a special memory to go along with it. And usually that memory was a story. I had to think about what he could have gotten me. "Is it a bracket?" He shook his head and the guessing continued for another five minutes. He wouldn't give me any hints and kept an entertained smirk on his lips.

"I give up!" I scooted closer to him with a small smile, hoping that he would finally reveal his secret gift. He let me wait as the tension built. "Soooo?" I pulled at his shirt. "Patience~" He was really enjoying this. With a few more minutes of me staring him down, he finally decided to let me in on the secret of the gift. I embraced the oddly shaped gift as it was presented to me and opened it gently.

"A coyote?" There in the torn wrapper was a handmade coyote toy. "Are you ready for the story?" He asked me with a calm smile. "You bet."

I do love his stories.

You know what really grinds my gears?

I think I have the most annoying neighbors. They are noisy and have no consideration for the people who live in a one mile radius of them. I wish they would move... Heck, I'd move to get away from them. It's like they do all this on purpose!

A few weeks ago when I was supposed to hang out with my friends, I caught their son hanging out the window, blasting one of his heavy metal songs. I think we could get along if it wasn't for his personality. He thinks he's god's gift to earth, and that annoys me to no end. And it just pains me to have to share the same air... Or space... Or anything associated with them.

But being the neighborly, friendly people my family are, we invited them over for dinner. It's a little thing we do with all the neighbors. Once in a while when our family feels up to it, we get to know the neighbors. So far, we've had everyone over on our block. Except for them.

The dinner went as I expected. The parents seemed nice enough. Maybe they were good in small doses. The kids were hellions though. Never have I seen such disrespect for their elders! The youngest, I think he was eight, he ended up pulling the table cloth from the table. At least most of us were done with our food. The middle child, around 10, kept muttering under her breath about how lame it was to be here.

The oldest, and closest to my age kept shooting me looks in between texts to what I'm sure were girls. It was worse that I had to show him around the house... At least his siblings were there, but I bet I could take him.

After spending a few hours with the family, playing games and watching TV, even chatting over silly things, it was time for them to head home. I was never happier to have someone leave my house. I just need to make sure not to cross paths with any of them for a while. They might want to come back over.

School Life

How do popular girls do it? No, I'm not saying I'm up in everyone's face, but there was a crown of people today! It made me feel claustrophobic... I'm glad I have a close group of friends to hang out with. They have the best jokes and seem to know everything.

Everything.

They like to gossip, and I like to join in so it works! They keep me up to date on the goings on in the school. Without them I'd be lost. As Penny would say, "it's better than listening in on what the teachers talk about." But they all aren't that bad. We don't gossip all the time. Most of our conversations consists of playful banter and witty remarks.

.......Sure.......

But other than that, I get called on a lot by teachers. I think they like to put me to work for some reason. "Can you take this here?" "Can you make some photocopies?" I don't really mind, but it's starting to make me look like a teacher's pet. But it's all hard work that I get the good grades! Teachers don't like to cut anyone any slack recently.

At lunch, I like to buy the spicy sandwiches. When I don't have a lot of money, I bring leftovers from home. Usually it tastes better, but when I get home I have to make something else. I eat too much... If I didn't get a little exercise, I'd gain a lot of weight. I should join track or an exercise club at school.

When I'm roaming around the campus, I find different people to talk to. It's a neat little thing to do, but I forget who I meet constantly. They tend to remember me, so it gets a little embarrassing, yet I continue to do it. I never learn my lesson and still go out to do that. That's just the way I am apparently and I enjoy it.
