"Hu, well, if you're offering," Aulus shrugged, attempting to seem nonchalant... But was that such a good idea? Probably not. He needed to seem keen more than he needed to seem cool and indifferent. "That is... Thanks. I'd appreciate that. I'm good for more than cleaning floors, I'd like the chance to show that." As for grumpy elites, well, he supposed he'd just try to steer clear; he could definitely seem himself clashing with this Seth guy, which would work out very, very badly for him. Don't get into a fight with an elite. Not smart.
"Anyway," Aulus shook turned his attention back to Aila, "what kind of duties?... I don't know. I guess I'd try anything once, just to get away from... from cleaning." Aulus peered upwards as movement caught his attention: a small shape was making its way down the wall, and seemed to be watching them intently. "Is that spinarak yours?" he asked as he identified it, jerking his thumb at the small pokemon.

"Hmm..." She considered her own duties, the things she had done as a trainee, the assignments she saw other trainees performing... "Oh, what about looking after pokemon?" He had seemed interested and knowledgeable enough when they had spoken on the Calamus Plains, after all. "We have public storage, where the various pokemon that are stolen on missions, caught in the field, or produced in the labs are kept until a use is found for them. They need to be cared for regularly, and I've seen trainees and grunts responsible for this in the past. You'd probably be restricted to feeding and cleaning, and I doubt they have the best temperaments, but it's better than scrubbing, at least." A half shrug accompanied her words, indicating that it was his own decision and she could likely find something else if that didn't appeal to him.
She noted the shift in his attention, idly attempting to follow his gaze. Her attempt became more whole-hearted at the S-word; she turned in the direction he pointed, sinking into the water almost to her chin and gripping at the poolside. "Spinarak?" Rose eyes flitted momentarily before identifying the obscured little form, its round eyes staring back at her. "You!" She seized a handful of water and tossed it, the furthest-reaching droplets falling short of the bug-type. "Stop following me! Stop it!"
The Spinarak tilted its head slightly and withdrew as much as it could - not much. Her violent reaction failed to deter him.

"Hu?" Aulus pulled his attention away from the little bug type to regard Aila in a puzzled manner. "Not yours then?" But apparently it had been stalking her. "It's not going to hurt you, seems friendly," he added after a moment, clambering out of the pool and moving a little closer to the Spinarak. Hunkering down he extended his hand towards it, studying its unusual colouring thoughtfully. "Why are you Ariados coloured?" he wondered aloud. "Are you a lab escapee or something?"
Nearby, Tortie gave a quiet huff of disapproval; she hoped her trainer wasn't thinking of going off to find a pokeball to capture the little bug. He was her human, she had no intention of sharing him... Still, maybe he was just interested. He'd better be just interested.

"No, it's not mine." She spoke as though it were utterly ridiculous to even entertain the slightest possibility. "It's been following me around since I returned from the volcano. Would just sit there and stare at me while I was confined to that damnable bed..." She sank slightly lower into the water, fixing a glare on the little spider pokemon.
Said little spider pokemon replied with a curious "na?" He had been helping her for a while, keeping her things in their proper places in the trainee quarters, straightening her room in her absence from it, keeping everything orderly when she was in the clinic... It had broken his little bug heart to see her return injured, and he had revealed himself so that she wouldn't need to be bored or lonely during her extended stay in the infirmary. That plan seemed to have backfired, but he wouldn't let that deter him, oh no! He was always watching from the shadows. Like a spider ninja.
The dear little Spinarak had no idea just how legitimately creepy this was.
The positive attention from Aulus was, however, a welcome change to the usual ignoring or anger, and the expression on his abdomen shifted to one of glee. Had he a tail, it would have been wagging at a speed capable of kicking up a Gust.

"Aww," Aulus smiled at the Spinarak and chuckled softly as Aila spoke, "have you now? You like her, hu?" Crouching in this position was beginning to make the scar on his leg twinge, and so rather than risk he twinge turning into real pain he sat down. Stretching out his legs he shifted a little closer to the happy little bug, hand still extended towards it.
"If it's that determined, I don't think you'll get rid of it in a hurry," Aulus commented to Aila, although his gaze remained focused on the spider pokemon. "Can't understand why you'd want to get rid of it," he went on, "but if you do, it's pretty obvious you're going to have to think of something better than shouting; doesn't seem to put the little bugger off at all."

"I have a fire type, if you think that would do any better," she said coldly, brow furrowed. It liked her? What business did it have liking her? As if bug types were even capable of doing anything more complex than being disgusting.
"I don't even know why it's following me. One day it just appeared in the infirmary and th-- It's touching you." Her words broke off into an aghast warning as the little Spinarak scuttled onto Aulus's hand, traversing the length of his arm and taking a perch on his shoulder. He turned an expectant glance towards the female of the human pair, as if trying to demonstrate that violence was the furthest thing from his mind. Not that that was his actual intent. He wasn't so plan-oriented as that.

"Well," Aulus shrugged, "maybe it thinks you're adora-ahahaha!" As the spider scuttled up his arm, he was unable to repress a giggle. "Well hello there," he cooed, reaching up with the hand opposite to the shoulder the Spinarak had settled on to scritch it very gently on the head. "You are friendly, aren't you?..." Uh-oh, he was losing serious man points here... But what was he going to do? Scowl and throw the little bug away across the room? No chance, he'd just have to put up with Aila thinking he was a softie... Actually, given her reaction to the bug, she'd probably put 'weirdo' above 'softie' in the list of adjectives she associated with him, and he could live with weirdo.
"I'm not sure if it's a male or a female," he went on after a moment, twisting his head awkwardly to try to get a better look at the itsy bitsy spider, "must admit I've never really learned much about gender identification in bug types. Mmfh, anyway, he or she is adorable if you ask me, not that you did of course."

Aulus would be correct; 'weirdo' was a much more accurate summary of Aila's current impression of the man. In terms of accuracy, though, 'deranged lunatic' might have been far closer to her actual feelings. She scrutinized the scene from the sanctity of the pool.
"You're crazy," she accused. "You know what's adorable? Buneary. Pichu. Maybe Togepi. Spinarak? No. Ariados? Definitely no." She returned the spider's gaze with a glare as she spoke, attempting to deter it with her rough tone. She'd driven it away in the past with a forceful enough 'shoo.' All it took was a little perseverance...
Were the Spinarak aware of her thoughts and capable of replying, it would have argued that it was getting pettings and nice words and she'd have to physically pry it off of its perch and throw it somewhere to get it to move. As it was, though, it simply regarded her with a tilt of its head, a blink of its round eyes, and an innocent coo.

"Well those are cute," Aulus agreed with a slight shrug, still petting the Spinarak, "but so are these little buggers, excuse the stupid pun. Look at those great big eyes, and those little mandibles. If it didn't seem to love you so much I'd probably try to tame it and then catch it myself." As it was, he didn't want to upset the little bug by taking it away from Aila. Clearly what he needed to do here was persuade her that the string-spitter was useful, and hope that she'd come to see it's adorableness in time. "They're useful little things you know," he said after a moment, "pretty small and unobtrusive, and the web they make's amazing. They spin two kinds in their webs you know, sticky and non-sticky; they only ever walk on the non-sticky strands see. If you can train them to spool out the non-sticky stuff you can make the finest, strongest, softest ropes ever, tonnes better than anything we can produce artificially or spin from plant fibres. Thickness for thickness it's stronger than steel cables." Who wouldn't want a cute little friend that could make something so useful?... Yea, yea, he was going all softie but at least the things he was saying aloud were practical now; maybe Aila wouldn't decide that he was an utter crazy sap after all.

"No," she objected, sinking slightly further into the water. Look at it? Purposefully? And outside of the context of a frigid glare? He really was crazy. "You're welcome to catch it if you like. And keep it in its pokeball forever so it stops following me."
Oh, now that was heartbreaking. The Spinarak visibly deflated at Aila's suggestion that Aulus catch it, even more so at the idea of being left in a pokeball so it could no longer visit her. It turned pleading eyes on the man. He wouldn't do that, right? He was a nice man, right? He understood that the little spider would be sad for the rest of time if that happened, right?
What the bug-type failed to understand was that the Nice Man was already building a case for it, and Aila listened with a relatively open mind. "Could I not do the same with my Venusaur's Vine Whip? There's no fuss with sticky or non-sticky in the case of vines, either." Nor would she have to deal with bug-types in that route, but that went without saying by now.

"If I'm going to catch a pokemon I won't just keep it in a pokeball," Aulus snorted, shaking his head and making a dismissive gesture, "that one be a waste for one and cruel for another. So, if I did catch the little beast I'd be letting it out, and by the looks of it, it would be straight off to find you. I think I'll save the bug and myself some fuss and let it be, thanks. Hu, and as for Vine Whip," Aulus gave another shrug, "you could, sure, but the vines aren't as strong, and with a length of web you can actually have a rope to use and reuse that won't wither up and go brittle, plus you don't have to rely on your pokemon being either with you or conscious. Can make other stuff out of the web too; emergency hammocks, thread, a fine layer of the sticky stuff when fresh makes a good wound dressing in a pinch... That's all I can think of off the top of my head... Damn, now I really do want a Spinarak. Not you though," he assured the bug on his shoulder with a grin, "I wouldn't dream of keeping you from your good lady."
The little mandibles were just so precious! And that little horn that seemed to serve no practical purpose, maybe it was used for display or something? While he'd been able to rattle off a bunch of facts about web he didn't know everything there was to know about Spinarak... In fact the properties of their webs, their type, and what they evolved to was about all he did know. Well, if he ever did get one he'd be sure to find out more.

She frowned at the thought that, even when caught by someone else, the Spinarak would still return to her. So basically, she was doomed to the thing's company no matter who owned it? Ugh.
"So the web is useful." She had to admit that much. Having a pokemon that was able to produce dressing for wounds along on missions seemed infinitely valuable, especially since the casualty rate seemed to be so high... But the thought of having that thing with her, where it could just... touch her whenever it pleased... "That doesn't mean the bug itself is useful. I'm just as capable of carrying ropes and first aid kits as I am of carrying a pokeball," she countered. She wasn't going to give in so easily, not as long as there was a way to argue against the points he was making.
The Spinarak, meanwhile, watched the exchange with bated breath. It couldn't tell how it was going - though it understood as much as the Nice Man's absence of an intent to catch it, for which it was very much relieved. But its Girl didn't seem to be yielding either...

Aulus sighed slightly and turned his head to regard his scuttlie shoulder-ornament; Aila certainly was a tough nut to crack. Poor little bugger. "Well having your own supply of it," he hazarded hopefully, "and having it to spin webs as traps, or safety nets even... Plus it's obviously loyal to you. It's never smart to turn your nose up at loyalty, even if it comes from something you don't find beautiful enough to be worthy of your company." Maybe that wasn't fair - he knew a lot of people were genuinely scared of bug types - but he wasn't a very fair guy and he felt a lot more sorry for the pokemon involved in this than the woman.

"It's similarly unwise to blindly accept any loyalty that's offered, especially if you foresee problems cooperating with it in the future," she reasoned. She wasn't so shallow as to consider any pokemon, especially a useful one, below her, but the idea of working with the Spinarak felt impossibly outlandish. She would not admit, even to herself, any degree of fear towards the bug-type, but she did feel that Aulus was perhaps siding a bit too strongly with the bug.
"I'll compromise," she said after a momentary silence. "I'll catch it, but I don't want it to touch me. I also reserve the right to dislike it." And she would indeed dislike it. Quite fiercely, even.
The Spinarak, unaware of the nature of a 'compromise,' continued to stare curiously.

"Well I..." Aulus sighed and turned to look at the bug. "Unrequited love is a terrible thing," he commented to it, "and I think this is the best offer you're going to get." Better than nothing. Turning back around, Aulus gave Aila a very serious look. "You're an Agent, and I'm a Trainee," he said flatly, "but I promise you, if you just keep it locked away in a pokeball all the time I'll find a way to make you pay. You're free to not want it to touch you, to not even like it, but it doesn't deserve that." This was Team Rocket; not everyone was going to adore and cuddle their pokemon, but he could at least try to see the ones he knew treated alright. Maybe threats wasn't the best way to go about it, almost certainly wasn't now he thought about it, but it was just about the only way of being persuasive he knew.
