Selael
The Pyromancer

"It's the Quiet Ones you have to watch out for..."

Selael examined the puppeteer for a few moments... A rather unusual character, though he so far appeared to be no threat. Another storyteller on the street trying to make a living, and it seemed like he was doing quite a job of it. His control over the puppets was rather exemplary, a display of dexterity that he had seldom seen in any people... After the introduction, he then started to attract the attention of Selael as he seemed to be glancing at his tome of Adenese history...

Selael held up the History tome, the large book seeming to steal attention from the other volume held around his body by a chain... It appeared that this tome was more important, however... The other volume contained that which was truly a secret passed down through the generations: the spells, duties and disciplines of the Shalehem Line. However, as far as the others were concerned, the History tome was the more important of the two. He remained silent as he held up the tome though, not sure if he should flip through to a section of the history of Aden... Perhaps only if he were asked to do so.

Hoata looked at the large decorated tome as the man spoke to her. A custodian? Perhaps hes a scholar of some sort. She thought with a slight shrug. She decided not to dig anymore deeper. "Wow you have? So if I ask just about anything about Aden's past then you'd know it right?" A grin formed on her lips. "Like the legend behind the feather and the phoenix?" She asked. She had heard bits and pieces about it on her way towards the city. Though she did doubt that the thing actually did exist. "Perhaps even about the first king?" She was rather curious about the tales. Though that was all that they were to her.

She then heard another voice and turned to find the man that had drawn such a large crowd earlier. To her, he currently was her competition. She was determined to draw a bigger crowd then he did. She stared at puppets as he introduced them and rubbed the back of her head. She found it rather odd that he introduced his Puppets to them. Perhaps the man wasn't all the way there. She wasn't so sure about him. "Ah...hello Princess Aria, Prince Casmere, and Antares.....So we've caught your attention? I don't seen why we would. "

"It's the Quiet Ones you have to watch out for..."

Selael turned over to Hoata and nodded slowly in response to her question. "Yes, I do know a great deal of the legend of the Phoenix Feather, and of the first King, among many other... Stranger tales." He opened up the book and flipped through it. "However... I can tell you about those legends myself." He flipped through the tome and reached the beginning of the book, and consequently, the beginning of Aden. He looked back up and started reading from it.

"A long time ago, there was a man who wandered the desert with a small group of friends and relatives... One day, he found a feather in the sands that fell from a Phoenix, whose down was radiant and the color of Fire. From that point, the party he was with decided to set up a village in the desert after finding a nearby spring... From that point, good fortune lined everything this man did... He found springs of water, sources of building material, food sources, and all the trappings of a civilization... In recognition of his grand works, he was named the first King of Aden.

"As for the Phoenix feather... It is said that the true one is able to grant its owner unbelievable power. Grand power over fire and life, and the power to easily level most cities as well as generally granting good fortune... However, because of this massive amount of power, the first King commissioned a family to guard the Feather that was hidden so long ago, to prevent a catastrophe being brought about by the very feather that brought the country to its birth. Not much is known about this family, other than their names are spoken in whispers in the criminal Underworld and all of those who pursue the Feather meet a grisly fate at the hands of this clan of Guardians..."
This was true, of course... He was the one who brought about that grisly fate. "Of course, not all of this family is made of people who wantonly kill those who pursue the feather's power... Some of them attempted diplomatic and peaceful resolutions to these conflicts... But, that's another story for another time." He certainly wasn't one of those peaceable guardians... He was every bit the avatar of terror in the underworld that many of his ancestors were, perhaps even more... He couldn't help but muse at the irony of him telling this tale in the way he did...

Hoata's eyes fell back on the man as he read from this tome. She listened quietly to the tales he told her from his large book. She did find it odd for him to wear such heavy things around him. The chains didn't look ever comfortable and with this injured leg, it surprised her that it didn't throw him off balance.

As he read she thought about the phoenix feather. How can something so simple like a feather do so much? What if someone actually found the phoenix that it belonged to? What would that bring someone? So many questions popped up in her mind but she decided not to burden the man with them. She would forget about them soon enough anyway.

Soon her thoughts were on the family he spoke of. "Guardians?" she asked. "They don't really sound too pleasant. If hate to be the person who runs into them. I think it would be better to run into the more peaceful onces." she said with a soft laugh. "Then again who would even consider going after the feather? It's hard to believe something like a feather could do that much. It's probably just and old tale of some sort." she said and shrugged. Hoata is the type of person that would have to actually see something to believe in it. "I mean, if nobody has really seen it before because it is so protected then how would anyone believe that it can do all of that?" Hoata let out a soft sigh and looked away. "Has anyone ever used the feather in such a way that it would be dangerous? I don't know if I would waste my life protecting something that I wasn't 100 percent sure..was worth it." Her gaze fell back on the man and she gave him a smile. "Of course I'm only an outsider looking in...it's not like my opinions matter." she laughed again and shook her head. Hoata then clasped her hands together. "Now...perhaps we can move to that inn?" The heat was starting to bother her.

The Pyromancer

"It's the Quiet Ones you have to watch out for..."

Selael, for the first time in a very long time, felt something... Guilt. Remorse. It occurred to him that he was really a monster... The monsters that lurk in the dark to deter the greedy and unwise... Though he quickly concealed his guilt, looking over at Hoata. "Most people believe that the Feather's power is very, very real... And it does have the power to create such catastrophes. There is one tale in which the feather was used by a corrupt court of Nobles to overthrow the King, only for the Guardians to destroy the Nobles and re-establish the King's rule. But you're right... No one would want to run into these Guardians, regardless of who they are..." He closed the book and looked off.

"These Guardians, if they still exist, probably know something that most people don't know... Although, perhaps the Feather is a myth, or a front to cover up something worse, or even just a bedtime story for the children of this nation to be proud of who they are... Who knows." It then occurred to him that, if people doubted the feather's existence... Perhaps fewer thieves would go after it. Although it was far too late for that now, in this generation, people knew the feather was real... They knew it existed, and they knew it was powerful. But, perhaps in generations when people become less aware and more detached from the legends as they become myths, fantasies to keep alive a desert rose...

Of course, the truth is far more terrifying. "The Legend is strong enough, though, that it keeps everyone here. Everyone is proud to be Adenese, to be in the Land of the Phoenix, and in the end, it's all they need to be happy." His obfuscation of the truth would, at least, keep Hoata from becoming one of his victims... He couldn't explain it, but for some reason, he did not want to have to kill her...

Hoata listened to the man and took a moment to think over his words. "Well...if the feather does have power then it is good that there are guardians...If the tale of the noble's is true then the kingdom would be doomed with out them." she paused for a moment to think the shortly continued her thought. "I think that is good that this country has a solid tradition that keep them here. Something that make them proud...whether its real or not. I don't have any sort of tradition...I'm not even sure where my family is originally from. So tradition has been long lost."

Hoata turned away from him and looked around at her surroundings. The city was huge compare to the places that she normally visits. She promised the others she would meet back with them before sun down. She glanced up at the sky for a moment to determine the time. I still have plenty of time. She thought. Her peridot green eyes lit up "Oh! I haven't gotten your name yet." She turned toward him again. "My name is Hoata, by any chance can I have yours?" she asked.

"It's the Quiet Ones you have to watch out for..."

Selael nodded slowly, seeming... Unexpectedly... Reassured by the remarks of a stranger... Perhaps his role in the world truly was necessary. However, he'd best not get ahead of himself... He could introduce himself by only his first name. If he gave his last name, she might figure out he's one of those Guardians... That might prove to be problematic later on if she knew just who he was in the dead of the night...

"I'm called Selael. A pleasure, miss Hoata." He bowed slightly, his crimson hair falling down his shoulders and his dull, golden eyes giving off the slightest hint of life, and perhaps even pleasure... He could almost say he enjoyed her company, though probably wouldn't, almost expecting the ghostly shadow of his father to pop up and laugh at him in that "I-told-you-so" manner that was so irritating. Of course, perhaps feeling for someone else wasn't all that bad... "Well, I Think I can find us an inn, if you'll follow me." He hobbled about, leaning on his staff to carry him toward the inn, the first time he had a genuine, benign enjoyment of other human beings shining in his eyes...

Hoata's eyes met his for a moment and a warm smile reached her lips. She slowly repeated his name to herself then a few more times to help herself remember it. She glanced back at the puppeteer for a moment and gave him a small smile. "Ah...if you need an inn...then feel free to follow....unless you have a room already..." she said with a slight bow before she turned away from him and started to walk after Selael.

She caught up to him and walked next to him. Hoata's gaze stared straight ahead though she would talk the occasional side glances at him taking in little detail about him that she had missed before. Selael was very different than the people that she was normally around. She wondered if he had ever smiled before. He was kind to her. More so than other people that she had first ran in to in the past when she walks though a city on her own. She took not of the darkness around his eyes. When was the last time he had slept? It's none of my business. I don't want to be nosy. she thought. "So how far away is a inn from here?" she asked "I've been wandering though this city for a few hours on my own and I couldn't find a single one...maybe I was looking in the wrong places or something."

"It's the Quiet Ones you have to watch out for..."

Selael held up his hand, gesturing to the distance. "The trick to finding the inns around here is that they're actually near the residential parts of the city... Most people have their inns in the more metropolitan areas, but I suppose Aden's odd like that." He began hobbling toward the residential district, leading Hoata and the Puppeteer toward one of the inns. The chains began jingling as he walked down the sand path, seeming to have a different tone about him... He was far friendlier than he usually was, and for some reason he felt comfortable around people for the first time in a long time...

Of course, things are always subject to sudden, violent change... He'd best not get his hopes up.

Antares Skyvehn
Puppeteer of the Guardian Wish

"Why, of course, I would notice especially you, milady." Antares said as soon as the foreign-looking woman asked about his sudden appearance. The crimson robed man said none. Most anticipated, of course. "After all, fellow performers often feel each other's presence at once. There can be no further explanation." He added and then smiled.

After that, as soon as the two began to converse, Antares pulled out some scrolls on the other hand. The two continued on discussing about the history of Aden; Antares, of course, was listening at the same time. After all, it was information gathering at the same time. He clasped his hands one time and then Casmere and Aria was engulfed in smoke; after that, they were gone. Suddenly, the scroll on the ground which was put there by the puppeteer sometime ago revealed drawn images of a princess (Aria) and a prince (Casmere). The puppeteer stood up and then listened on to the two's conversation.

When Hoata and Selael introduced themselves (finally), Antares continued on to be quiet all those times; he didn't want to intrude such a sensitive discussion, after all. He just stood there and then watched them in their conversation about the history of Aden, the phoenix and the first king. In some ways, he enjoyed it, too; although, he knew all too well that he should be focusing on the exact reason why he came to Aden. Unbeknownst to him, he instinctively grasped the letter in his bag as he listened to Selael's lectures about the history of the place. He needed more. He needed more information.

Then, the next thing he knew, he and Hoata was being led by Selael by one of the inns in the city. The puppeteer didn't mind, of course, even though he already had his own room just by the kingdom walls. It was a small and gloomy inn that was unlikely to have decent customers; he didn't mind that since that that was exactly what he needed. Secrecy. Anyways, he was led by the said man to another inn.

"Are you sure you don't mind my company, Lady Hoata and Sir Selael?" The puppeteer blurted out. "I seem to feel that I am intruding such a delicate discussion and party." He added and then gave them an apologetic look on his face.

Selael looked back at Antares as he made his remarks about whether or not this discussion was being intruded upon. He shook his head slowly. "No, you are not intruding on anything particularly secret or delicate..." He opened up the door to the inn and hobbled inside... The bottom floor appeared to be rather busy, though most of the people there appeared to be Adenese, not guests of the inn... Although, the waitstaff appeared to be particularly busy, serving tables with plates of what foreigners would consider rather exotic and unusual food and drink. He approached the counter, nodding at the innkeeper, the innkeeper nodding back and looking behind him.

"Do you have any vacancies here?" The innkeeper nodded enthusiastically, although to the more perceptive, one could almost detect the slightest hint of fear in the eyes of the keeper... "Yes, as a matter of fact... Although I'd have to go prepare a room, but until then, feel free to take a seat and order something to eat." Selael nodded in approval and thanked the innkeeper, leading the Puppeteer and the Dancer to a table for four, taking a seat on the chair with its back to the wall. He set his staff aside, though the tomes still hung by their chains off the sides of his body. There appeared to be four menus already set up on the table, each one a fine, sturdy parchment with the items hand-written in fountain pen, the tiny spots of ink on some of the words the telltale sign of hand-done craftsmanship. Selael picked one up and perused through it, holding out one hand, as though inviting them to do the same.

Hoata looked ahead in the direction that Selael was gesturing and nodded. "Alright, I see....I normally never wonder in to the residential parts of a city...I wouldn't have checked there." she said with a slight shrug. She looked over at Antares as he spoke to them. "I don't why would feel like you are intruding....I was just curious to about the history of this place. No need to keep quiet. It's the first time I've ever been here...I like to know some things about the places I visit." She took a moment to stretch then grinned up at the puppeteer. "And I have to say...the crowd you drew was rather large...I'm a bit competitive...I'm determined to draw a bigger crowd than you." she said with a wink. "Though I have to say your stories are very interesting. I can't help but wonder where you come up with them...and the characters that go along with them."

Her eyes scanned the buildings that she passed buy, trying her best to memorize the way back. The last thing she needed was to get lost. All she needed to do was make sure she could find the main street that leads out of the city. The band that she travels have set up their caravans just outside the city walls. She loved the thought of staying away from the group for the night. Hoata was rather tired of sleeping on the floor and in crowded areas. She also loved the thought of a place to bathe. Good thing I brought my money with me...she thought and smiled herself.

Once Inside of the inn Hoata watched Seleal speak to the innkeeper and noticed something slightly odd about the way the keeper answered him. She quickly shrugged it off and walked over to the table and sat down. Hoata took one the menus and scanned over the selections. She quickly decided on a drink but didn't quite know if she wanted something to eat. Choices, choices, choices...

"So Selael...have you ever traveled outside of Aden?" she asked as her gaze returned to him. "It sounds like you don't get outside of the city much....Have you ever seen the ocean or the western part of the world. I was born in the plains region..I think..I'm not sure" she laughed and shook her head. She couldn't count all of the places she had been to. It was nice to explore new places but she would love to find a place to actually settle down in to. An actual home to return to.

Calti was sitting on the side of the walking path, his long scarves spread out all around him as he shuffled through his small pack. With a sigh, he found that finding his small instruments was going to be impossible, as he must have left them in the last town he visited. With a loud groan, he scooped up his belongings, and shoved them into the pack before closing it tight. This time, he took extra care to make sure the pack would not open, or spill anything.

The amount of money he had left was not great, but he hated to lose it. He would have liked to be able to make more with his music, but it was impossible now. With a sigh, he sat there thinking on what he should do to entertain now, now that he found himself without the items needed to do what his last idea required. His mind drew a blank. He cursed under his breath in Arabic, before looking up at the passing peoples.

When he saw a rather odd little group pass, he stood up and brushed the sand from his clothes. One among them looked like an entertainer, perhaps talking with her was his best bet. He followed after them, entering the inn after them, his eyes on Hoata.

"It's the Quiet Ones you have to watch out for..."

Selael sat for a few moments and awaited a drink... In ornately crafted, stone goblets was presented to them a sweet sort of wine, deep red in color, and, if not for its translucency, it could have easily been mistaken for blood. Selael took a sip of the wine, nodding slowly. He then turned to Hoata and finally answered her question. "I have seldom left the hallowed desert of Aden, but... I have once. An arduous, perilous journey that took me to the wastes of the South... An unwelcoming, barren place and every bit as frightening as the legends say, and even more. Compared to it, this desert is vibrant and as alive as any forest, though nourished by the ideas of humankind rather than the blessings of nature." He then looked up at her and locked eyes, the slightest spark of life appearing in those dull, dead irises. "Although... My father went out West. He just decided one day to travel out that far, but... He was never one to allow tradition to bind him to the point that it'd prevent him from exploring." He was, of course, lying about that too... He knew full well why his family moved out west, and it had everything to do with tradition... The same reason he was lying to Hoata about who he was, to prevent people from being used as leverage against the Guardian.

He then noticed the be-turbaned individual behind Hoata, seeming to furrow his brow in taking notice, though saying nothing, believing his gaze was enough to tell Hoata that she seemed to have company... In the meantime, the inn's chef brought some food for them... A dish filled with a sort of dip made with a rather spicy crop, made with a spice that could be felt at the back of the throat and through the nostrils, served with unleavened bread... Selael picked one up and dipped it in the sauce, biting into it and waiting for Hoata to notice who he was looking at behind her...

Eric Halen
Your Fortune awaits
---------------------------

A small gust of wind sent some sand in the face of Eric, the fortune teller. His mouth was open, and some sand made it in there. The purple haired man spat out the sand, rubbing his tongue in an attempt to get rid of thedry, dirty taste. What a flavor. "That's disgusting!" He exclaimed, still trying to get rid of the awful flavor. Just another way to worsen an already bad day. Why was Eric having such trouble?

Eric had woken up from a horrible dream that morning, and he couldn't just pass it off as a stupid old dream. He was, after all, a fortune teller. What he dreamt of often occured. That vile dream involved him seeing a familiar face. A face he had hoped to never encounter again. Eric sighed, and wiped it from his mind instantly, trying to ignore what he had seen. There was no way he would ever see that face ever again. And even if he did,it would mean nothing

Later on that day, Eric had seen someone from the castle, probably a servant, come to get his fortune told. Eric had allowed the customer eneter Eric's shop as, of course, business was important. Unfortunately, after the servant left, Eric ended up remembering certain ordeals he had wished to forget. He had spent the rest of his current day thinking about those events. The time when he tried to help a fox girl get a feather, but then left her on her own when it seemed it was most convinient to leave. Then there was the time when he met those siblings that blocked out his powers. That was frustrating. Finally, there was the day he dealt with a burning building belonging to the noble family Valdigraph. He had met the Valdigraph daughter that day, and started having flashbacks of his childhood. Those flashbacks hadn't stopped since.

As Eric walked the town during his lunch break, his stomach grumbled, and he remembered what a lunch break was for. He began to look around, trying to find a good place to eat. Nothing seemed to peak his interest though. Not until he saw an inn. He knew that many people of Aden seemed to like the food served there. With that in mind, Eric had to consider how expensive the food was. Eric decided that it couldn't hurt to check. He walked in, and saw what looked like the innkeeper. He smiled, and walked over to him. Casually, he asked how much a decent meal would cost him. When he got his answer, Eric smiled. The price was fair, and so Eric decided that he would have his lunch there. Looking for a table to sit at, Eric noticed something that caught his eye. "No." He told himself quietly. What Eric saw was a man. A rather familiar man. His hair and attire definately allowed him to stand out, and the books around him were like a giant sign, pointing out exactly who he was. It was the seemingly emotionless fire user that set the Valdigraph house aflame. Eric sighed. It was best for him to ignore the man completely, and hope that the man didn't notice Eric.
