Tambrey remained unaware of whether she was being liked or not; she was starting to like the gruff man for some reason though. He seemed grumpy sure, but with a strange sort of outlook that made some sense. And when he agreed so readily that anger wasn't such a likable emotion, she decided that he really couldn't be as bad as he seemed to want to appear. She smirked as she listened to him talk about something that sounded rather outlandish, even from the start point.
"The outcome of such an event probably depends upon the higher ups who have ta deal with it; honestly, from a guy who writes notes on tea, I don't think it'd come to combat. And I'm pretty sure they'd not ship anyone from anywhere just to be thrown around... Transport costs money. Still. If ya do go to thank him, I hope I get to see the outcome; sounds like it'd be an amusing interaction at least."

"Could probably charge admission," Aulus opined with a nasty smirk, flicking off his flipflops and putting his feet up on a convenient little coffee table. "If you handle the sales, I'll split the cash with you fifty fifty; doubt you'd get a better offer from mister 'hands off my tea', sounds like a real tight b*****d... Mmh, got a point about the transport costs, maybe I'll just fling Frostie-pants around instead." That sounded entertaining. He probably couldn't get away with it, but that didn't make it any less amusing to think about.
"So then," Aulus took a bigger sip of his now slightly less scalding hot tea, "what's your area, or what're you looking to get into? Seems everyone's going on about what they'll do when they make it to grunt, or agent..." Oh great, he'd given himself away as the lowest of the low now. Still, it didn't seem like Tam was the sort to try to pull rank on him, and if she did try anything on then once he equalled her, she'd regret it.

"Unless you meet him and discover this Frost person to be a Sumo champion or... well, a fellow martial artist person or something right? Or... would that make it more fun? Ah. I'm pretty sure ya'd have to disguise it as a morale-boost match or something for entertainment purposes. I really don't think anyone just puts up with beating up for the sake of beating up, even 'round here." Tambrey mused "Even so; I'll take ya up on the offer of sales profits."
She remained standing, if leaning back upon a counter; it seemed she'd do so until her tea was finished. Her book continued to 'save her seat'.
"Hm." She canted her head, looking over Aulus. "No offence is meant her by the way- not tryin' ta call you old, but ya do look a bit experienced f'r a trainee. 'M a grunt, m'self, though not by long really I guess. A few months. How're ya finding it so far?"

Experienced, hu? How nice. "That's a polite way of saying it," Aulus snapped, reached up unconsciously to finger the deep scar that marred his features. "Not much of a fan of polite, by the way," he went on, jerking his hand away from his face as he noticed what he was doing, "I'd rather you were honest and said: 'You look like the kind of vicious sod who's been involved in this kind of thing since he could walk'. Hu. I suppose at least that tells me my face fits here though." It certainly didn't fit anywhere else. He didn't think the scar made him ugly as as such, heck it was probably a turn on for some girls, but he did know that it effectively stopped him from walking down some roads in life. When you looked like a criminal, people treated you like one. He supposed in the end actually becoming one was the best thing he could have done, then at least when the world judged him it would be judging correctly.
"Anyway," Aulus grumbled, folding his arms across his chest, "so far it's menial labour and not a lot else. There's been some assessment of skills as a trainer, questions about my background and that, but nothing interesting. Sooner I'm out of a red uniform happier I'll be. I had to clean up somebody's puke the other day; right in the middle of the hall, I mean really, who does that?" He wasn't a squeamish person, but being able to stomach jobs like that didn't mean they didn't make him want to find whoever was responsible and insert his mop somewhere deeply personal.

Hum. He /didn't like/ the polite way of saying 'hey, you look battered enough to be a Rocket!'? Well that was certainly rather refreshing; a little annoying considering it was simply entirely the other extreme but still refreshing.
"Eh. Well. I wasn't gonna put it like that either way, but if it works for you, we can pretend I said that instead. I mostly meant you and your belts and such." She shrugged. "Don't imagine many trainees are a black belt in karate or anythin' like that. The scar /does/ allow for a pretty rough and tumble impression t' your character though."
She nodded a little and grimaced at the talk of the puke. "Ah yeah. That probably happens around here a lot more than any of us 'spect if we believe the rumours that come through here. It does get a little easier as a grunt... A little. Though I've washed so many beakers and swept so many floors this month..."

"...Oh." Well now he felt kind of dumb. "So that's what you meant. Well," he shrugged slightly, "good at what I do or not everyone has to prove their loyalty... Hu, and at least you can go on big missions as a grunt," Aulus nodded for emphasis, scowling again, "I mean how are trainees really supposed to prove themselves? Yea, yea I know they couldn't risk people they're not sure are loyal going on important missions, but still, it damn well sucks. Egh. Not too long now though, I can put up with this for a bit longer." A bit, but not very much.
"Anyway," Aulus shook his head, his scowl fading slightly, "you've been here a few months? What can you tell me about... I don't know, current events I guess? I've been told that we snagged Kyogre pretty recently, but what about major heists before that? Know anything?" He really could do with knowing more about the goings on around here, you never knew when the chance of making a good showing could be whisked away from you just because you didn't know some detail from a previous mission.

"True. It does make sense, it's just really really annoying while you're doing the work you know you're... well, maybe it's a little self inflating to say 'too good for', but y'know. Still. It's never long 'fore the promotion comes around. And then it's an age before the next..." She shrugged. "Sometimes the higher ups run training, I think. You could try and prove y'self that way if the oppurtunity comes up..."
Tambrey thought to herself for a moment as the question was asked. "Eh.. You'd have to talk to someone more knowledgeable about most o' this but... well, yes there was Kyogre captured... Er. A certain Lance is in the brig after infiltratin' the place for a while... Er. Before that? Galactic nabbed a Ho-oh they sent a team aft'r, I heard.... From a volcano... B'fore that was some kind o' fancy party thing to be crashed. I heard someone blew up the ballroom on 'em."

"Mmfh," Aulus said indistinctly as he sipped his tea. "Pretty impressive," he clarified, taking his feet off the coffee table and folding himself up absent-mindedly into a full louts, "sounds like there's good action to be had once you get out of the red uniform at least. Feh, and anyway, I've never claimed to be modest; I could be putting my skills to good use at the moment, but no, mopping floors and cleaning windows." Let her think he was arrogant if she wanted to, he didn't care, and she was probably right in any case.
Finishing off his tea, Aulus looked up at the clock on the wall with a sigh; it was getting late (well, lateish) already and he'd drawn duty setting the dining hall up for breakfast. He still needed to get some laundry put on tonight, let Tortie out for a run in the cool night air... Egh. Everything seemed like far too much of an effort.

"Eh. Well. I don't doubt you're better than... the puke cleanin' and all of that, but ya know. Rules are rules and such." Tambrey shrugged a little. She felt kind of like she was underused a bit herself, even as a grunt, but she supposed she did have the option to do a lot more than a trainee could. Even if her work in the labs was really limited for the moment, at least she got to work there and contribute to stuff.
"Everyone needs cleanliness and hygiene." She shrugged again. His work was necessary too, even if demeaning. Not that she wanted to be doing it.
Finally she made her way back to her own seat, sitting after moving the book carefully. "Ah, the time'll fly by anyway. One day you'll get on a mission and trainee status will be... well... it'll feel like it was a hundred years ago."

"I know somebody needs to do it," Aulus snorted, "I'm just looking forward to that somebody not being me. Mmh. Soon as I get to being a grunt, I'll be looking out for possible missions like a Pidgeot. Being a grunt sounds a hell of a lot better than being a trainee, but I don't plan to spend too long wearing that uniform either." Agents got their own room, more interesting jobs to do, more trust, more freedom... He couldn't expect it to come right away though. It would take time for him to earn the white uniform (complete with ridiculous belly jacket but that was another complaint for another day), but he would do it in the end.
"Being allowed off base once you get to grunt sounds attractive too," Aulus added with a scowl. "At the moment I can only go anywhere I can't get on foot if I'm accompanied by a higher ranking Rocket, and have a damn good excuse so far as I can tell. Going crazy stuck here day in day out, but at least I guess the exercise facilities are good." If they weren't he probably would have snapped by now.

"Heh. I probably don't use them 's often as I'm supposed to but yeah, 's good to have usable exercise space." She agreed. Her tea was finished now, but she'd brought the cup with her, placing it upon the floor in front of her seat before her book found it's place upon her lap again.
"The whole 'someone else' factor.... I have to admit that's nice. Though, I guess that you're the 'someone else' to me at the moment." She mused "The puke vanishes and stuff gets clean because 'someone else' does it; 's kinda odd to remember ya used to be that 'someone' and then t' meet a current occupant of the title..." She tapped her fingers against her knee for a moment. "I can't say it wouldn't be nice t' make agent... Seems like it takes a long time though unless ya're something special..."

"Well, I guess I'll just have to show I'm something special then," Aulus said with a shrug, "I certainly don't intend to spend more than a year working up to Agent. In case you didn't guess," the scarred man smirked over at the dark-haired girl, "modesty and meekness aren't really part of my skill set. Nobody ever got anywhere fast by sighing and saying 'that's just for special people'. Assume you're one of the special people, and you'd be surprised how often people agree with you. If you're arrogant and audacious enough, people pay attention. Sure you do have to have something to back it up in the end, there's no bluffing your way to the top on a hand of nothing, but not being afraid to say you are special will get the talents you do have noticed... Presuming you do have some of course; there are always no-hopers in the world."
He was not a no-hoper. No. He had talent, he had drive, and he had ruthlessness; those were the things you needed to do well in life... Or connections and lots of money of course; wealth and knowing the right people could open doors to even the biggest losers on the planet.

Something special. Hrm. She wasn't sure if she could count herself as such at all. She found herself rather happy in the labs, even just pottering around with Grunt work, though it wasn't that she wouldn't be far happier doing real science of her own. It was just that she seemed to be good at helping with the projects and enjoyed being a part of it. Still, she worried her lip a little as she seemed to have discovered a trainee with far more drive than she had. Surely she'd been similar once...
"True enough." She had to agree. No one did get anywhere without being showy and such, unless they paid their way... And even then, it was rare to see someone with money who stayed meek really. "Hm." She grinned slightly. "Oh you seem perfectly delightfully modest and gentle to me..." Of course she wasn't serious. "Can't say y're a no-hoper.. Besides, I get the impression that would be dangerous to one's own health."

"Smart girl," Aulus grinned, "last person that called me a loser ended upside-down in a skip with one of his shoes shoved in his mouth and a few less teeth than he started the night with... Mind you he also insulted my girlfriend, spilled my pint onto me, mocked my accent, and implied that I was a simpering pansy so I suppose if somebody just called me a loser they might get away with just upside-down in one of the big laundry bins or whatever." Grinning to show that he was - probably, partially - joking, Aulus finished his tea and got to his feet.
"Not that it hasn't been fun chatting," he went on, "but I actually do have some laundry and other stuff to do before bed, so I'd better be heading off... And if you fancy an introductory karate less sometime, I'm sure we can figure out some kind of arrangement." As a grunt she could probably do him a small favour or two that would square things up so far as he was concerned. Honestly he would have been happy to do it for free if she was really interested, but he didn't want her to think that he was the sort of guy who let people walk all over him. No; payment due for services rendered thank you so much.

Aw. No 'clever girl'? Tambrey heard the words and only slightly mourned the fact that she didn't get to pretend to be a velociraptor in her head.
One eyebrow found itself positioned marginally higher than the other as Tambrey listened to the description Aulus gave of the fate of the last person to insult him. "Well... Clearly he never did it again? I don't really know why he'd make fun o' y'r accent; 's a perfectly... good accent." She says honestly, though she seems to be at a lack of a suitable replacement for good. Or she replaced something with 'good'.
"I'll be 'round Aulus. I actually think it'd be an interesting thing to learn, sure." She agreed to the idea of karate lessons; they seemed ideal as a skill for some field work to her ears. "I'm not hard to get ahold of really. Have a good night wi' y'r laundry and such. Was nice to meet you."
