I remember distinctly one time in year 6 at Primary school when we had a reading time period. The look of sheer amazement was memorable when I pulled out Lord of the Rings and started digging into it. Afterwards I was subject to the comments:
'OMG how can you read that?' 'That looks so, like, boring' 'What are you reading that for? You deprived or something'
Yup, got em all...

I have an interesting habit of reading as I walk down the halls of my school. Of course I don't hit anyone so it should be ok. I, of course, am bombarded with, "why can't you put your book down? or "How can it be that interesting?".The usual basic questions. The most comments probably came from reading either Les Mesirables or Don Quixote, unabridged.

People have bugged me for reading big huge books. Except I bug my friend when she reads at lunch because it gets really boring when no one is talking and I can't read at lunch because it is just too hard. In elemantary school people used to bug me and ask me what I'm reading or what my book is about.

People often look at me like I'm some different species. I almost always have my nose in a book, so people will jump in surprise when I raise my eyes from the book, or speak.
In my school, because I read, that makes me an Untouchable. I don't get a lot of chances to talk to other students. It's a never ending cycle because no one will talk to me so I'm out of the loop, and then when they DO talk to me, I can't relate at all. I get picked on (even by the few friends I have) because I'm the only Junior who's never been kissed or gone to a dance crying .
So, yes, I do get teased sometimes for being a reader.

I have often times been mocked for being an avid lover of the written word, but i've learned to ignore them, for i pity them. They do not know the power and wonder that is books, and that is something to pity indeed.

My boyfriend teases me CONSTANTLY for reading.
Then I tease him for liking: "Magic: The Gathering" even though he's an adult.
That shuts him up. biggrin heart

I think that people who are avid book worms have two things encoded in their genes: 1)of course a love of books 2) a magnet to attract stupidity. Usually people will laugh when I'm walking down the hall and reading at the same time. Nothing really serious ever happens, but I do get lots of strange looks for liking books so much. Thankfully I have friends who like to read as much as I do so I'm not completely alone.

what I hate more than anything else, is when someone says "Why do we have to read? nobody likes to read, its boring!" i always want to say "speak for yourself!" and in some cases i've done it, but i hear too often to keep saying it.

elijahschick I have often times been mocked for being an avid lover of the written word, but i've learned to ignore them, for i pity them. They do not know the power and wonder that is books, and that is something to pity indeed. Indeed. People who choose not to read won't ever really know the power that comes from writing and reading. And it's something that's available to so many people today, which makes it all the more sad. It's not like nine hundred years ago when books were scarce and only the wealthy could have the power. Now it's available, but some people don't want it.

I was lucky. People were so used to me reading at every single opportunity whether it be during class, walking through the hallways, or at lunch that it would freak people out to see me not reading without an obvious reason for me not to be reading. After this happened a few times the teachers quit taking books from me, or they'd a t least give them back after that class was over. People would approach me when i wasn't reading and didn't have a book in hand and ask if someone had stolen my book and act like it was the saddest thing in the world that I'd be without somethig to read. It was weird.

My friends used to steal my books and hide them. They would then sit back and laugh as I ran around my house all frantic looking for them . Bastards <3
Of course, when they all called me to help them with their essays they'd wish they'd never made fun of me XD

Nope, I read at home, plus my reading developed much later in my life. Also my friends were smart and bookish.
