He was actually grateful for the few moments of silence. Lance's eyelids drooping for a moment as the complaints from his fatigued body came to the forefront of his mind again.
Then the girl's initial question brought his attention back to her once more, a brow lifting until she revised it. He sighed quietly, for these were questions he'd actually been asked many times. In interviews and from fans alike.
"Aside from being raised in a clan of dragon masters, where we believe they are sacred and mythical Pokemon... I personally prefer them for their strength, resilience, and intelligence. They're difficult to capture and train, but their powers are superior. They're virtually indestructible and there's no being clever with them."
After all, the people on the raid saw first hand how powerful Lance's dragons were.

"Ah." His reasons did not waver completely from Len's own thoughts. It was why she wanted a Dragonite, even if it was a clone. By Arceus, she'd get one somehow. "You certainly have made a valid point there."
Once again, an arid silence bowled the cacophony of her voice away. Thinking was such a hard item to do at times. It required so muuuch effort. Wouldn't it be better just to have him talk consistently for some time as she listened?
"Raised in a dragon clan?" She knew there to be such a thing, she has come across it many times during her studies of Pokemon myth and beliefs. Sounding surprised was just an added dose of unneeded sugar. "That's surely something. Was it all rituals and magics?" Arceus, she bet it was.

Lance had neither the state of mind, nor the energy to go talking at length about anything. He was merely answering this girl's questions and nothing more. And even that was tiring. He had no idea why she had this curiosity regarding him, but there could be worse things.
There was a soft sigh when she asked about his clan. If only because he didn't feel like going into detail at the moment. "We have many rituals and legends, but no magic." There was much more to his clan than being a hocus pocus crazy religion. It was a way of life. One that he took very seriously.

Len sighed, rolling the the tip of one of her braids around her finger. This conversation was feeling incredibly one sided with Mister Champion, no- Mister Permanently Unfazed delivering answers not to her satisfaction. Rocket acquainted or not, the current topic of rituals and legends caught her interest. After this little bout of questions, she'd return to her chambers. Some more research on this Dragon Clan might help with getting the Pokemon she certainly sought after.
"What do these legends and rituals consist of, some sort of coronation? Test?" Whatever in response was going to be key and her invisible notepad was ready to jot down data.

They were not uncommon questions at the very least, and Lance didn't feel he had any obligation to carry out civil conversation with a criminal. He would answer them and nothing more.
"There is a test," Lance replied. "The dragon user's challenge. It determines the worthiness of a trainer, and is one of our most important rituals. The trainer is given a series of questions by the clan leader. If the trainer answers them in a satisfactory way, they are rewarded with honor and distinction, the clan's approval, and other rights and privileges."
Lance now leveled the grunt with a hard stare. "Why are you asking me these things?"

She acknowledged his annotation with a tiny shift of her head, detailing what was said and what needed to be researched later. It seemed a simple test, yes? "Has anyone ever failed it-?" she asked in response but was caught swiftly off guard come his question to her.
A light shift was all that remained present to his disturbing stare. Truly, it was like receiving a scowl from a mentor. How intimidating. However, Len tried to conceal her discomfiture with a mild tug of her mouth to the left in a sideways smirk.
"Oh, I have my reasons." she responded airily. "None of which concern you, I mean. So you needn't worry of anything happening. That will occur by another hand, I am sure."

Lance closed his eyes for a moment and sighed yet again. He knew he had things coming to him, she didn't need to remind him of that. That woman with the red hair was likely to be paying him a visit soon enough.
"I'm not so concerned about myself. I knew the risks when I accepted my mission. I have a greater responsibility to Pokemon and their trainers."
He then looked back at the Rocket before him. "And to answer your question, yes. Many have failed, most notably my cousin."

This brought about a plethora of questions. Most notably personal, considering the man was doing his duties for "Pokemon and their trainers". She held her tongue though. Any more time and Sorano would surely find her missing. That wouldn't be great, at least, not for him if he tried to drag her out.
One last question, than she was out of there.
"Who hired you?"

That was not an easily answered question as one might think, and it caused Lance to raise a brow.
"I earned my place in the league. But if you're asking who asked me to take a role in the elite four, or as leader of the Indigo League... there's no one specific person."

"Huh," Unsatisfactory! What would she do with such information? She really wanted to kick a bucket.
. . . Literally, not figuratively of course.
"Alright than," added Len, as she rose to her feet. "Thank you kindly for your time, Mister Perm- Mister Champion. I will be seeing myself out."
With than and short twist of her heel, she descended to her quarter in ponder. There was a lot of research to be done.
A lot.
