Ren was rather pleased that he was able to discern more and more of Jove's facial expressions, though the puppy's frown was difficult to see in the dark. Those wide, luminous eyes of his served as a night light, however, enough for Ren to catch the anxious look on his face before they flickered halfway shut.
"Well, there are no mimics here, like I said," Ren murmured gently, then smiled in the darkness at the sleepy growl. "Hey, sometimes lullabies can be nice," he whispered, poking one of Jove's fluffy ears. "I happen to like being sung to sleep sometimes. It makes me feel nice."
The lullabies he knew had all been sung to him by his grandmother, during the short time that she had stayed with he and his family. After that his sister had sung him a few, back when she had actually considered him to be her brother. Ren had even sung Natalia to sleep once, though he had not sung to the others yet.
It took a few moments of silence for Ren to realize what exactly Jove was doing. Dragging himself out of his internal musings, Ren slanted his gaze down at the puppy, an amused smile fluttering over his face. "What're you doing?" he asked, rifling the other boil's hair. "Trying to breathe, is that it?" Ren gave an exaggerated intake of air, then let it out slowly. "It might seem a bit of a hassle, certainly, but I don't even think about it anymore. As for you, you don't have to, so it takes more effort."
He paused, then asked hesitantly "Do you...remember anything about your real life, Jove? I mean, what you were like when you were...alive?"
The question felt almost too personal, and Ren hastily backtracked. "Sorry," he said quickly, his hand stilling for a moment. "I didn't mean to pry."

Jove nodded as stubbornly as possible in his drowsy state. Feeling Ren breathe was pleasant, and he would appreciate it if the gryphon would not poke fun at him for seeing if he could return the favour. He had no idea how to imitate a heartbeat, so breathing was the only suitable option.
He paused, one fluffy ear falling to the side as he thought about the possibility of a lullaby... Naaah. He could sleep just fine without being sung to, even if it was nice sometimes. He briefly wondered if all these childish things Ren enjoyed just took a particular sort of person to admit to enjoying, and if Ren was one to fall for all that crazy ghoulfriend stuff, why not fall for cuddles and lullabies and what have you?
The pup's ears perked up again when Ren asked him about his past life, and his eyes opened, completely alert. That was an odd question, and an odd way to phrase it. He felt his "real" life was this current state of death, and whatever happened before that was like the dreams you forget after you've been awake too long.
He sighed gently in reply, and made a "whatever" face to say he was impartial to the question, and didn't remember what it had been like when he was alive. He didn't even remember much about the human world either, now it was just a vague sense of noise and clutter in his mind that he couldn't figure out. It didn't even really occur to him that his unusual fears and physical weaknesses were a direct result of his death, they just existed, as simply as he did.

Ren grinned, fluffing up Jove's hair a bit more. "I happen to think you're just fine the way you are, Freckles. No need to try and breathe for me, though I rather appreciate the effort." He knew it how odd it must feel to have someone so close to you breathing when you couldn't; probably nearly as odd as it felt to feel someone so close to you not breathing. Jove's tiny body was as still as one of Ren's pillows as one floppy ear fell sideways. Ren's fingers absently moved to pet one; they were as soft as his hair, nearly as expressive as his face. It made Ren smile, and he shifted a bit, giving Jove a bit more room.
The room was suddenly illuminated a bit more and Ren glanced down at Jove; the puppy's eyes were wide, head cocked to the side curiously. "You don't know, then?" Ren asked, and felt the calm sigh that rippled throughout the other boil. Walking his fingers across Jove's back, he said musingly "I suppose you wouldn't, though. I wonder what it feels like to die...or rather, I wonder what it feels like to be a ghost. I don't know if I could get used to it..."
Or perhaps he could, and just didn't really know how that whole breathing thing worked. Ren let out a soft sigh. "Do you like being a ghost?" he asked, stifling another yawn. "Also, Jove....you know you can come here any time, okay? Any time the mimics are out and you don't want to sleep in your own room, you can come stay with me. You don't even need to knock. Just come on in whenever you want." Ren grinned again, his smile ghostly white in the darkness. "And I'll supply the cookies."

Oh well, he gave that whole breathing thing a good try. At least being tucked under the covers next to Ren's warm body was warming himself up as well, and he was sure the gryphon appreciated that too.
He squirmed in a slightly ticklish manner as Ren's hand moved up his back, and then frowned. Ren shouldn't imagine what it was like to die. The pup had been led to believe such speculation on the part of the living was just morbid, although there were clearly some advantages to being a ghost. Like not needing to eat or drink, or make those oddly frequent trips to washrooms to do... whatever it was living things did there. And if he tried really hard he could go through things, but was more likely to just get a good solid bonk on the head for trying.
With another sigh he just watched his friend. So many weird questions tonight, first if he remembered his death, then if he liked being a ghost... Jove liked being in existence, as it was better than the alternative, but it wasn't something he spent much time thinking about.
Now cookies on the other hand... Was Ren saying he had cookies right at that moment?
Jove pushed himself up again and sat back on his feet, eyes wide and ears perked in question. Since food and sleep were merely a luxury for the pup, it wasn't as firmly drilled into his head that night times were for sleeping and day times were for snacking, this was as good as any time to eat cookies!

Ren did appreciate the fact that Jove's body was warming up, especially since the boil's feet had been like ice cubes a moment ago. Not only that, but he just liked the feel of someone next to him. Normally he also liked to hear them breathe, feel their heartbeat, but seeing as how Jove was a ghost and had neither of those things, it was good enough that he was able to curl up next to him.
"What's that frown for, hmmm?" Ren asked lightly. "Is that because I asked what it was like to be a ghost? Don't worry, little puppy, I don't plan on dying for a very, very long time. I have too much to live for here. Besides, I like being alive. Been alive my whole life, don't plan on stopping that now."
He winked at the other, grinning, and then blinked. "Don't give me that look, now," he said with a small laugh. "I ask questions because I'm curious, okay? Haven't you heard the phrase 'curiosity killed the cat?' Gryphons are part lion; that's a type of cat, so I think the rule applies to me as well. Except for the whole killing thing," Ren added as an afterthought. "That's not particularly necessary."
At the mention of cookies, Jove sat back up, ears flicking upwards. Ren stared at him for a moment, vaguely confused, but then realization hit him and he laughed again. "Oh, you want some now, do you?" he asked in amusement and shook his head. Pushing himself partially upright, Ren reached over to his bedside table and slid open the drawer. He removed a bag of Alessa's homemade cookies and then pushed the drawer shut, settling back down against his pillows. Reaching out, Ren tugged on Jove's wrist to get him to lie back down as he offered him a cookie.
"Here you are, Freckles," he said teasingly. "Sweets for the sweet, right?"
Munching quietly on one for himself, Ren tilted his head towards Jove. "You know," he said softly, smiling. "I'm glad you came to my room tonight. I rather enjoy the company."

Oh... he really did have cookies! Briefly Jove wondered what else Ren had stashed away in that little bedside table drawer. Probably more fun things for bed, like books or candy or... something. But his wondering was cut short by the cookie, and the teasing remark which certainly warranted a grumpy scowl. Maybe tomorrow.
The little ghost flopped back down and took the cookie, wiggling around until he lay on his back in a comfortable position for eating. Thankfully the snack wasn't a choking hazard at any angle, he had no breath to obstruct, and he wasn't even sure there was a "wrong way" for food to go down as some had suggested after a food-related coughing fit. He knew he had all that stuff explained to him once, the heart and lungs being in your upper half, with your stomach lower down... but when eating, down was down, right?
When Ren began musing over his own cookie, Jove tilted his head back to look. And perhaps it was a strand of the gryphon's hair, or a dust mote that tickled the ghost's nose, but either way there was very little warning before he sneezed three times in quick succession, spraying cookie crumbs everywhere as he sat up again to rub his nose. That was weird, he thought, turning to look at Ren from behind his sleeve like "What was that?"

Ren reached out, playfully ruffling Jove's hair. "That frown of yours needs to turn the other way," he said lightly, putting a hand against the boil's face and teasingly attempting to push his cheek to make him smile. He knew he was probably only serving to bother the other boil, but Ren knew Jove wouldn't get mad at him; if anything, that grumpy expression was almost as adorable as his rare smiles.
Scooting over so that he was pressed against Jove's side, Ren himself settled more comfortably down on his back, munching on a cookie. Alessa had added extra candy to this particular batch, so they were almost too sweet - but only almost. He turned to say something to Jove, but recognized the way his face screwed up. Ren sat up just in time, letting out a choking laugh as Jove sneezed, cookie crumbles spraying across the bed.
"What was that?" Ren sputtered, unable to control his laughter. The confused look on Jove's face, combined with the fact that he'd just practically spat cookie everywhere was just too amusing. "You do realize you're going to have to clean all that up, right?"
It was only after he had managed to calm himself down a bit that Ren realized something - the anxiety, the fear, the frustration from his nightmare...it had all sort of just...faded away, replaced with just a sense of pleasantry and...comfort. Ren smiled, reaching out to hug Jove tightly, playfully rocking back and forth.
"You're so cute, you realize that?" he said cheerfully. "Ahhh you make me smile!"

The puppy frowned, clearly Ren was laughing at him and that violent sneeze and the confusion that had followed. No fair.
His expression turned skeptical as he dropped his hands back into his lap, waiting for Ren's laughter to settle. Clean up the cookie crumbs? There were so many of them! And it's not like a little extra cookie in bed hurt anyone. Eating a cookie in bed was downright pleasant, even Ren could agree to that one.
He was about to huff in protest when he was grabbed around the middle. "Urrrrf," he woofed softly, both out of surprise and the indignity of being hugged and rocked like a little child. But the gryphon seemed delighted. In fact, his friend was looking better than he had all night, and he smelled less frightened too. It was hard for Jove to scowl at being called cute when Ren was so happy to say it.

"No frowning," Ren said cheerfully. "Besides, I'm not laughing at you, I'm laughing near you. There is a difference," he added, as if to clarify his point.
Jove was looking rather stumped at the cleaning idea, glancing around with a somewhat skeptical expression which quickly turned into one of surprise when Ren's arms slid around his middle. To his pleasure, Ren heard a tiny woof escape the other boil, and he grinned stupidly, feeling happy. Everything about Jove was simply downright adorable, and it was making him feel very...older brother-ish. It was a new feeling, one that Ren was not entirely certain he could handle very well, but for the most part he was very happy with it.
"I wonder, are you ticklish?" Ren asked, waggling his eyebrows teasingly, but he flopped back onto his back on the bed, exhaling one long breath as he reached a hand up, pressing it to his forehead. There were cookie crumb remnants digging into his side, and he stuck a hand beneath him, flinging crumbs to the side before settling down again. "I'm not gonna do anything, don't worry. Just curious."
Suppressing a yawn, Ren let his fingers drift over Jove's tail, absently floofing up the already fluffy fur a bit.

One of Jove's ears swivelled in Ren's direction at the question. Another weird one. The pup had no idea if he was ticklish or not, although his earlier squirming with Ren's fingers on his back might have suggested he was it hadn't consciously crossed the ghost's mind. In the past he had never let anyone get close enough to find out. He had always just run and run, and had only just recently encountered the kindness that drove others to hold onto him instead of just letting him go.
With a suspicious glance at the hand touching his tail, Jove licked one of his fingers. Spotting a nearby crumb he poked at it to pick it up, and then stuck his finger in his mouth. There was absolutely nothing wrong with cookies in bed. But if Ren wanted the crumbs gone, Jove would have to oblige. He spotted another one, this time on his friend's chest, and gave it a poke to pick it up. It didn't pick up the first time, so he licked his finger again and jabbed a little harder before the crumb finally made it to his mouth.

Ren grinned. "Stop giving me that look," he said with a laugh. "I like asking a lot of questions. You'll just have to get used to that."
Scooting over towards the other, he prodded his fingers in Jove's side, as if testing to see if the other boil was ticklish. Ren himself was quite a bit, but he usually hid this fact from the rest, if only because he did not want to have that held over his head.
"Cookies make the world go 'round," he said lightly, and then added teasingly "And so does having fun~!" before he leaned over, slipped off the bed, and all but three Jove over his shoulder. The boil was, not surprisingly, as light as a feather, and Ren moved to brush the crumbs from his sheets. Once he was finished, Ren tossed him gently back down, flopping down beside the wisp and nudging his side playfully with his head.
"Silly little puppy," he said cheerfully. "Can't clean up cookie crumbs one at a time! You'd never get done."

Jove was completely helpless against the surprise poking, he had no idea what Ren's intentions were and made no attempt to defend himself. But the surprise sensation was enough to pull a soft squeal from the pup, he flinched and squirmed away in shock. So he was really quite ticklish! What was Ren thinking, taking advantage of his innocence like that!
He blushed brightly again, his awkward wiggling freeing his bare legs from the covers. Unfortunately that just made it easier for Ren to grab him. But the puppy didn't go without a fight, he whined and kicked his scrawny legs from the time he was scooped up to the time he was tossed back down in a disarrayed heap of fluffy tail, white nightshirt, and bony limbs. Then he just blinked in confusion.
But when Ren headbutted him, Jove couldn't help but wag his tail, and touch those long ears with his fingers. He idly pulled down on one of his own ears for a second, it wasn't the same as when Ren stroked it.

"Aha~!" Ren said triumphantly as Jove let out a squeal, scooting away from him, his face flushed. "So you are ticklish!"
He was obviously very pleased with this discovery, if the somewhat idiotic grin that crossed his face was any indication. Ren found silly pleasure in finding things out about his friends; each new little fact was like discovering something special, even if it was from something as trivial and mundane as being ticklish.
Jove was not, to say the least, pleased about being picked up like a sack of potatoes. Ren had to swing his head sideways to avoid getting a kick to the face, but it didn't deter him in the slightest. Instead he let out a laugh, falling back onto the bed and rolling over to Jove. He felt warm hands on his ears and without intending it, a purr thrummed through Ren. He flushed bright red, jerking upwards abruptly, ears flattening back against his hair. "S-sorry!" he stammered out, feeling foolish. It was not that he did not like it; on the contrary, his ears were one of his most sensitive areas. But it was the other thing - the purring - that Ren kept secret. Only one other person knew about that, and Gabrian had gone to great lengths to make sure that Ren's dirty little secret was not revealed.
Though Ren supposed letting Jove find out was not...that big of a deal...was it? The puppy was harmless, and Ren knew he probably wouldn't tell anyone if he asked him not to. Resting his head back down on his hands in a very catlike gesture, Ren inched closer, nuzzling Jove's side again.
"Sorry, little one," he murmured. "You just surprised me, is all."

Jove's fluffy ears perked forward as the vibrating purr slipped from his friend, and then he startled backwards at Ren's sudden movement. He recognized the signs of displeasure immediately. With a hesitant whine he kept his hands to himself, holding them folded against his chest even after Ren settled back down. Did he not like his ears being touched? Did he not want to be touched like that at all? Jove had found the ear-touching a very pleasant sensation, was it different for the gryphon?
"Rrrrrrrr?" Jove questioned, both with his tone and alarmed eyes. His little growl was as close as he could get to the purring noise Ren had made just a moment earlier, but it was higher pitched and vibrated in his throat rather than in his body. Hopefully he hadn't hurt his friend... He had no idea that the purr was a happy noise, not with his general lack of experience in the areas of close interaction, and Ren's conflicting actions immediately afterwards.

Ren lifted his gaze to meet Jove's, catching the small, confused whine. A rush of embarrassment coursed through him, both for his reaction and the fact that he had probably scared the poor boil.
"Hey, no, I'm sorry," he said sheepishly, reaching out to pat Jove's head affectionately, rifling his hair. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to jump at you like that. It's just..." Here Ren paused, vaguely ashamed of his own reasons for hiding the fact that he purred. To him it was just one of those things that he preferred to not have others know, regardless of how silly or mundane the thing was.
"I'm not...particularly comfortable with people knowing I do that," Ren finished, and then held up a finger to his lips, leaning close to the other. "So what say we keep this a little secret? Just between you and me? You can pet my ears, but no one else can." Except for Gabrian. "I won't mind if you pet them; it makes me smile, okay?"
Ren didn't think the boil would tell anyone any way, but before he could continue, Jove let out a soft "rrrrrrrrr" that went up on the end, like a question. It was undoubtedly one of the most adorable things Ren had ever heard, and he felt a smile break out across his face. "Yes," he answered, and purposefully leaned over, ducking his head under one of Jove's hands so that the wisp's small fingers brushed over his ears. The purr thrummed through him again, and Ren leaned back, moving to lay on his back on the bed once more.
"See?" he said, still a bit pink-cheeked. "It makes me smile."
