Lilith blinked in surprise. Wait, what? "Hold on... You're name isn't Frost, then?" And here she was, thinking that it was merely a coincidence! So great was her confusion and general shock that when she swung her paddle to hit the ball back to Frost [or was he?] she missed completely and the plastic little ball flew right past her, bouncing and rolling onto the floor. Lilith pursed her lips, stooping down to retrieve the mutinous ball. "Okay, I call foul on that."

After she served the ball once again, she smirked. "Me, make a party? Oh, Gods, no. That would never work, believe me... I doubt many people would go to a party organised by me, much less one celebrating a simple equinox." Lilith chuckled. "Heck, I don't even know how to make a party!"

"For all intents and purposes my name is Frost," Frost replied with a slight shrug, returning the ball once more. "It is not the name I was born with, but I left that behind a good while before I became Frost. I fail to see why anyone should be forced to use a name they dislike, whatever their reason for disliking said name may be... Mmh. Parties need... food, and probably alcohol and... music? Oh, and people of course. I wouldn't know what kind of food, drink, and music however, nor how much of each unless you count 'far too much' in the case of alcohol."

He had been dragged to a couple of parties in the past, but he hadn't enjoyed any of them. So much noise, and so many people who all seemed intent on invading his personal space and or being sick on him. Everybody else had seemed to be having fun, but he couldn't wrap his mind around why they enjoyed such activities.

"If it is important to you, perhaps you should just go and eat somewhere off base with a couple of friends," Frost suggested eventually. "Perhaps somewhere outside, given that you are celebrating..." He trailed off at that point, frowning very slightly as the correct word to continue his sentence failed to appear. Eventually, the pale-eyed man made a vague gesture with his paddle and concluded; "outdoor things." 'Outdoor things'. Brilliant, now he sounded like an utter simpleton; he didn't mind being thought of as weird or creepy, or anything of that nature but he couldn't stand to have anyone question his intelligence.

"Ah... I see. I can respect that, then. Besides, the name 'Frost' fits you so well... I can't really imagine you having any other name." She volleyed the ball right back, making sure to focus twice as hard as she was previously. It was not like this game actually meant anything of worth... but Lilith was somewhat competitive.

She crossed her arms and huffed slightly. "That's partly my point. Parties take up so much time and effort and spending of both... It just seems like it would be a waste if no one attended." She shrugged her shoulders, gazing off into the distance in thought. A small smile graced her countenance. "Mm... I was kind of thinking of heading out into town with Serafina for a little while... Serafina being my Charizard, you know," she added, for she doubted that Frost would have any clue as to who Serafina would be without any context.

This time the ball got away from him, and as it bounced off the table Frost frowned slightly again. "Bother." That was what he got for trying to pre-empt her. "I suppose it would be a waste," Frost agreed as he retrieved the ball and served it again. "To have tried hard with something only to have it fall through it always frustrating... Mmh. Time spent with one's pokemon can be just as satisfying as time spent with humans, and it is a lot easier than trying to sort out a big party. I think many people fail to appreciate them simply because they can't engage one in inane chatter. Mmh. There are practical considerations with the larger pokemon of course, but Charizard are not so large as to be problematic."

He hoped she didn't decide to let said Charizard out in here for him to meet; he didn't especially enjoy being in close quarters with fire types, especially those that actually had naked flames on them.

Lilith could not help but give a small chuckle as the ball eluded Frost's reach. "Heh, one to one, then." She hit the ball right back to him as he served it. She nodded agreeably. "Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking as far as just a small celebration would be concerned. It doesn't need to be huge to have meaning, yeah? It just needs to be something of significance, like Serafina is to me."

Lilith smiled as she recalled past years with her partner Pokemon at her side. Those years were tough, yes, but so much more bearable with the Charizard at her side. Back then, of course, she was a mere Charmander, but that was of little consequence. "I hope to have a nice, quiet time with her. She's like a sister to me, really. But you know..." She looked back to Frost. "If you want, you'd be welcome to accompany us... As a friend, of course. That is, if you're not preoccupied with any other prior engagement..." Lilith trailed off, unsure of what else to say.

"Oh?" Frost paused in mid-swat, and the ball bounced past him off the table again. "Welcome to accompany... Mmh." That was an unexpected offer: what should he do about it? Lilith seemed like acceptable company, and it might be nice to get off base for a while but... He wasn't quite sure what the 'but' was actually. Just hesitance, a natural tendency to reclusiveness? There would be the presence of the fire type, but the sensible part of him (i.e. approximately 99.9% of him) knew that it wouldn't attack him. It would probably do him good to put himself out of his comfort zone like that in any case, he couldn't spend his whole life trying to avoid flame-related pokemon after all.

"I would be glad to accompany you," Frost said eventually, turning to retrieve the ball from under a small coffee table. "You must forgive the long silence," he added as he served again, "I am not accustomed to such offers."

"Two to one," Lilith remarked with a cheeky smile. So far, all of the points have been won by mere blunders, and not skill. Perhaps that was most preferable course, though... It was better to have it just be a light hearted battle between amateurs than an all-out war between experts. When Frost finally accepted her offer, Lilith chuckled happily.

"Seriously? Awesome, that's great to hear! It'll be fun, I promise! ...Or, at the very least, pleasant." A sincere smile spread across Lilith's face, brightly lighting it up in her joy. Hopefully, it would indeed be as fun as she predicted. An outing with a real friend! ...Well, Frost was more of an acquaintance that anything else at the moment, but Lilith wished that they could be friends. It would be good for both of them, she reckoned. After all, look at her! The former epitome of solitude was inviting a man she just met today to a friendly outing! She truly had changed.

"It's no problem... I completely understand. I'm certainly not used to making such offers, myself!" She hit the ball back to Frost, shrugging her shoulders a bit.

"Pleasant is quite sufficient," Frost said with a nod, carefully batting the ball back across the table, "I am not sure how much of a... fun person I am. I enjoy things, of course, but fun..." The pale-eyed man trailed off, remaining silent for a few moments before shrugging. "The word seems to me to imply certain levels of noise and chaos that I do not find enjoyable. Perhaps this is just because most of the time when people say they had fun last night, said fun involved copious amounts of alcohol, loud music, and probably groping people they barely know. I have never seen the appeal in any of those things."

Drunken people made his skin crawl. They were so loud, so volatile, so utterly shameless. He had never been able to understand why anybody would do that to themselves, or indeed to the people around them. Drinking for intoxication rather than the taste, attempting to alter yourself, to escape reality. Disgusting. Crass. Pathetic.

Lilith smiled defensively a bit when Frost happened to mention that unfortunate pastime of the overdone consumption of alcohol. She had experienced that little phenomenon hardly a few days past, and she certainly would not label it as the most "fun" thing she had ever done. In fact, it ranked on one of the lower rungs of that little ladder, particularly when she expelled the contents of her stomach onto the hallway floor and feel - on accident, mind you - into Lennyka's lap. Yeah... she could stand to forget that she ever did such a thing.

"Mm... I would hesitate to call such activities as drunkenness fun, myself... Just saying." Lilith shrugged in a nonchalant manner, even though she was worried that she might somehow slip up and say that she was drunk just a night or to ago. It was not for any reason of levity, though... No, quite the opposite.

...It's never really a good plan to drown ones sorrows in liquor.

"Anyway... is this not fun? Or pleasant, or whatever," Lilith asked as she hit the ball back to Frost. She pouted indignantly. "I would that I am having fun, playing and talking with you. It's not like alcohol is the only way one can enjoy themselves."

"Mmh?" A very brief frown of bemusement flashed across Frost's face. "Well if getting unspeakably intoxicated isn't 'fun', then why do people do it?... Well, aside from actual addicts that is, obviously it's different with addiction... Mmh, anyway." Shaking his head slightly Frost returned the ball and put the issue out of mind. "I suppose this is fun," he went on after a moment. "Or enjoyable, or pleasant. I suppose I just prefer the latter two words." That was rather foolish, having an emotional preference for one word over another? It wasn't as thought 'fun' was a crass curse that he could legitimately look down on it was just...

"I suppose because 'fun' is a more..." Frost trailed off into silence for a moment as he tried to work out where he was going with this. "A more versatile word," he continued eventually, "it can be applied to such things as drinking to excess and other foolish activities, which gives me a negative view of it. It makes little sense, but even I am only human; I try not to be ruled by emotion over logic, but I do not always succeed." Perhaps he should make a point to use the word in future, dispel his dislike of it. On the other hand, did it actually matter all that much? It was just a word, and everyone was entitled to their pet peeves... No. It was illogical. It didn't matter that it was only a very small matter; he refused to act like a fool now that he had realized he was doing so.

"Because they want to escape." Lilith spoke those words without a second thought. She did so for she knew them to be true first-hand. It provided a sweet, temporary escape from all that haunted the everyday person... The repercussions were sometimes dire, but that was the price one had to pay if they were to travel that road. After that night, of course, Lilith felt a bit more hesitant to take that path, but she could see the appeal of it, certainly. To just... let it all go... it was a nice thought.

So intent was Lilith in speaking those words that she completely forgot to hit the ball as it bounced back to her, and it "ping"-ed as it rolled off of the table and hit the floor. Lilith sighed exasperatedly and retrieved the ball, serving it once again. She seriously needed to focus.

"Believe me," Lilith smiled bitterly, "excess drinking is not that fun." She might be digging herself into a hole by mentioning that with Frost, seeing as how he opposed to drinking so openly. But... words were intractable things. "Having fun is versatile, yes, and in that, it can be used for all sorts of things... Not just vulgar things like drinking. Fun is... well..." Lilith stopped to think a moment. Fun, fun, fun... What was fun...?

"F" is for friends who do stuff together, "U" is for you and me...

Escape. Yes. That made sense. He knew it did. He knew that escape from their problems was why his parents had drunk. He also knew that part of the reason he looked down on drinking to excess somewhat was because of how much they had disgusted him. No will to better themselves. No intellectual spark; if either of them had ever possessed one it had long ago been drowned under cheap spirits. Mmh. In any case, it was a foolish emotional connection, one that he really ought to try and shed after so many years. While he might not want to drink enough even to get tipsy, he knew that some people did. They enjoyed it, and it was harmless in general. Even getting seriously drunk once in a while generally did no harm from what he had observed in university... Well, other than hangovers and unexplained traffic cones anyway.

While he had been lost in thought Frost had absently been continuing the game of ping-pong, and as he shook himself back out of his thoughts and came off auto-pilot, he was just in time to miss the ball. "Bother," he bent to retrieve the ball, "apparently I play better when I'm not really concentrating... There is nothing wrong with drinking," he went on eventually, "just because I have no desire to get 'smashed' doesn't make it a bad thing to do on occasion. The same goes for getting tipsy, only even more so. Mmh. Not everybody holds the same standards and values, I should attempt to remember and respect that." People should be free to drink as much as they pleased without him expressing his disapproval, but equally he was still entitled to think it was rather crass and foolish. So long as they were not harming him, it was polite to keep his opinions to himself. Remembering that when some oaf was half way down the second bottle of wine, however, was easier said than done.

Lilith smirked half-heartedly, her features becoming somewhat grave as her mind turned to thought. "Yes, that's true... Respecting the decisions of others, whether to drink or not; it's all very well and good..." Her voice trailed off as her mind became overcome by the thoughts in her head. She only drunk once before... Did that make her a bad person? Surely not, right? After all, that feeling of euphoria was merely fleeting, and it was quickly replaced by feelings that were certainly less than pleasant. She wouldn't become addicted to the feeling, right? ...Well, who could tell? After all, she had changed.

Yes, she had changed, but whether it was for better or for worse was up for discussion. It wasn't just her personality that had changed, but it seemed like her mind had done so, too; her mind and her heart. She had a change of heart. But she was such a coward that she doubted that she could ever go through with ridding herself of herself. She wasn't brave or strong enough. So much of a coward was she that she had even hurt the one whom she cared for the most...

"I wish that I wasn't such a coward..." Without even realizing it, Lilith spoke those words out loud. She did not even try to hit the ball as it bounced to her.
PostPosted: Fri Mar 25, 2011 8:18 am

Oh dear. This was not good. She was going to start talking about feelings, and other things he had no idea how to cope with. It would be rude of him to just leave, but it might be for the best for both of them; he would probably upset or anger her which in turn would damage him, especially if she got violent when angry and or upset... Still. They were planning to go and have lunch together. He should at least try to do something.

"What do you mean by that?" Frost asked after a few moments of silence. "In what instance were you a coward?" He certainly couldn't empathise with her (in order to be brave or cowardly one had to feel fear, and he had long ago repressed that so deeply that he was barely ever aware of it anymore), but perhaps he could help her all the same; try to get her to approach whatever her problem was in a logical fashion or some such.

Hoo boy, what a mess Lilith had gotten herself into! She finally realized what she had spoken out loud when Frost had questioned her about it, and her response was to quickly cover her mouth with her hand and blush in her embarrassment. How could she have been so stupid, blurting that out?! Oh, how could she possibly explain...?

"I-I don't really want to talk about it all that much," she stammered, chuckling a bit. It would be rude not to explain herself to Frost, however... And who knew? Maybe he would be understanding and talk about it with her. Of course, it would be very strange to tell someone whom one knew for only one day that they almost got to an unwanted third-base...

"Well... You see... Someone close to me and I, we were going to go somewhere, then that person forgot some things, so we had to go back to get it. When we were going to retrieve it, he had the idea to do... something... else. And I got so caught up in the moment of it that I went along with it. We were just about to, and then... I said something. Something that really hurt that person... Because I was scared. I was unsure of whether or not I really wanted to go through with it, and when it almost happened, I chickened out and..." Lilith could feel her voice choking up, and she tried to will herself not to burst into tears.

"...I really hurt him. I hurt him because I was such a coward. And now... I don't know if he's going to forgive me for it." Lilith pushed a disobedient strand of hair behind her ear, a forlorn look on her face.
