Ren knew from the look on Gabrian's face that the other did not believe him in the slightest when it came to arguing about his parents. That, and this was one of those times where it was non-negotiable. A frown tugged at the corners of Ren's mouth, and he reached a hand up, absently rubbing the back of his neck.
"I never thought you weren't capable of anger," he said stubbornly, but stopped with one look from the nix, exhaling slowly. "Okay, yes, I did, but that doesn't mean that I don't believe you now."
The heaviness the nix's voice carried was immense; Ren had never heard anything quite like it, not even from his parents. It was though he carried the weight of the world in just a few simple words, and Ren had never experienced that sort of protectiveness that Gabrian bestowed on not only him, but on Alessa and LW as well. That "I'm quite possessive by nature" comment was an understatement.
"Who says I don't know any better?" Ren murmured, though there was a quiet smile on his face that betrayed what he was feeling. Gabrian's words had held a sort of finality to them which meant that the conversation was over and that the nix had won, (though Ren was not about to admit this). "And it doesn't surprise me. It's just weird, okay."
Gabrian's eyes had fluttered when he touched his cheek, closing after few seconds, and Ren took those few seconds to look at him carefully. He wondered vaguely how he had gotten to be so fortunate, not just with Gabrian, but with LW and Alessa as well. Everything inside of him told him that he did not deserve what they offered him, that he was not worthy to be in the company of people like themselves, and though Ren was still worried internally, he had no intention of leaving them anytime soon. What he craved was right in front of him, almost able to be within his grasp, and Ren wanted it more than anything. Somehow, in some way, he had stumbled upon something wonderful, something that made him feel better about himself, something that made him feel wanted. It was a new feeling, but a pleasant one, and Ren wanted to hold onto it, at least for as long as he could.
"Coffee sounds wonderful," Ren said, then stood there, somewhat awkwardly, rubbing his hands up and down his arms as he shifted uncomfortably from one foot to the other. It was obvious by the way Gabrian was looking at his emblem that the nix had no idea what was going on, and for a moment Ren felt rather idiotic. He almost reached out to snatch it back, to say it was all just a joke, laugh it off, but then something shifted in Gabrian's face and he breathed in sharply, clenching Ren's emblem tightly in his hand. The nix pushed past him, to his desk, grabbed a piece of paper, scribbled on it, and then thrust it into his chest.
Ren blinked, automatically reaching to take it. "What the - " he started to say, then looked at the paper. For a few seconds he squinted at it, trying to figure out what the drawing was, but then he realized that it was, in fact, a crude drawing of Gabrian's emblem.
"Oh," said Ren, staring at it. "I didn't...I hadn't..." "I wasn't expecting anything back" would not come out, because truthfully, he had not. Giving Gabrian his emblem was his way of thanking the nix, of showing him how much the demon meant to him, how much he trusted him. "I hadn't thought..."
"Why?" the question was blurted out unintentionally and Ren took a step back, his face burning as he held up a hand. "I'm sorry, ignore that." He glanced at the paper again, at the little drawing. "Thank...thank you, Gabrian."

When the gryphon looked at him and told him he hadn't believed he was capable of anger, Gabrian managed to offer him a smirk, lids still hooded over his eyes. There might even have been a fang showing, but the expression vanished almost as soon as it came, a yawn ripping through him and thus successfully ruining the effect the nix had been going for, "My bark is usually worse than my bite," he mumbled after he stiffled the yawn back, suggesting that while this was indeed usually the case, it didn't mean it held true always. Ren had seen the sort of 'sharp' bark the nix was talking about; after all, when threatened, he usually resorted to words, mostly because he felt he was more than slightly adequate at wielding them like a sword. However, that did not mean he didn't have fangs or claws sharp enough to cause at least some damage, "I just usually don't have cause to bite. I will if shoved in that direction though, and your charming sister pushed my buttons."
Possessive was an understatement; overprotective was, perhaps, a more accurate rendition of the behavior the demon had just displayed. Gabrian figured that despite the fact he wasn't really draconic (wyrm was more accurate, maybe), he still had a rather feral need to protect that which was he considered his treasure. In case, 'treasure' wasn't necessarily everything that gleamed and glittered; it was people he cared for, and it was clear he had no problem wrapping around them, roaring in the face of whomever dared threaten them, even if he had all the chances of losing said fight, "Algae are quite fine too. Don't dis it till you try it; you like salads after all. I simply prefer mine to be wet, is all," he seemed to pause here and looked up to the ceiling, "Hmmm... I wouldn't mind going to the river to bask and just munch on some of those lazily later, actually," this was said mostly to himself, but given thee fact Ren was right there, it was obvious the other boil heard the strange statement.
Gabrian visibly perked up at the mention of coffee, "Coffee," given the fact his tail twitched eager a couple of times behind him, it was obvious the demon rather liked that idea, "Lovely. Let's go do that then," he reached out, turned the gryphon around and began to push him eagerly towards the door, even while the other boil was still distracted by the fact he'd just shoved a (badly drawn) piece of paper at him, "You're going to buy mine for me, actually, given the fact I left all my seeds back at my place and I'm not even wearing my clothes. I just thought I'd let you know," he paused again, turning to look over his shoulder at his tail, "It's quite convenient we both have tails, actually, and that we're almost the same height," the fact he was ignoring the fact the poor gryphon boil was stuttering in an attempt make heads or tails of what the I.O.U meant was probably not missed, but Gabrian refused to address that until he was at the door, one hand on Ren's shoulder where he'd been shoving him forward, the other on the knob of the door.
The first question was confronted with a small smile as he turned the knob, "Because I'd been thinking of doing that for a while now. I just hadn't gotten around to doing it; you kind of snuck up on me," pushing the door open, he lead the other boil outside, "It makes it more significant if it's a trade, don't you think?" another smile, and another small push at the gryphon's shoulder, "Thank me with coffee. I need coffee right about now. But... you're welcome nonetheless," a pause, and then he pulled on a rather serious expression, "But no, seriously. Coffee. Now," that said, he closed the door behind him, leaving the room peacefully quiet.
