The lioness bristled, and was irritated, in an obvious sort of way, when Jabari contradicted her. Her expression twisted into a disappointed scowl. Those ears flattened against her head, and she sighed. It was an exhausted sound.
"I don't like this anymore than you do," Indira's voice was hard, "We've all had to make sacrifices, Jabari. This whole pride has suffered. You have lived a privileged life. You have grown strong and powerful, and Ashnai'le needs you now. Do not worry about your brothers. That is my job."
"If you have faith in me, if you love your homelands, then you will do this," she was more Mwanasheria than mother now, "I know Sahen, as much as anyone can know him. I have arranged it so that he'll trust you… no matter what."
"It will work."
Because it had to. They were running out of options.
"But now is not the right time."

He took a deep breath, trying to shove the fear that had come out as sarcasm down. "I--I apologize," he said, his head hanging. "I'm--I'll do what you want me to do. Just leave a note when you need me, you know I will always come."
Soft, loving brown eyes looked at her, his head still lowered. "I trust you, I've said that before, I'll say it again. My life is yours."
He was going to wind up dead. But... but she was right. He was healthy and strong, which was more than most of the pride could say. He was an ungrateful b*****d. "I should go before people start wondering," he said.

The Mwanasheria accepted her son's apology with a stately nod, and her heart twanged uncomfortably with a little bit of guilt. It was Jabari's right to have doubts. If he didn't ask questions, it would mean that she had failed as a mother. Indira had raised her boys to be fearsome warriors and clever tacticians.
It was good, that Jabari used his head. Fear was not something to be ashamed of. But she needed him to trust her, and to do exactly as she asked, or else everything that they'd strived for would be for naught.
The life she required her boys to live was dangerous. But Indira did not request anything she wasn't prepared to give herself. If it came to it, she would die, before any of them did.
"Stay strong," Indira, swelling a little with pride, smiled fondly at Jabari, "my son."
