The word 'rent' was like a dagger to the heart, and it froze Ever up with words still on the tip of his tongue, staring at Breu in a glazed and baffled sort of way. Then he shifted into motion again, smoothing hands over his hair and hunting down his bag, to make sure it was easily within reach.
"...yeah. Not so much." He could leave, though, if the guy was really so up in arms about having someone sleep on his couch...

"Ah..." Said Breu with a sigh.
"...No job." He rubbed the bridge of his nose and looked stern and thoughtful, the faded grey of his eyes did little to make his expression even a smidge less stony.
"...Leads?" He asked with an arched eyebrow. "... can you at least... cook?"

Oh, he had a job, and maybe the thought flickered across his face as he considered it. The problem was, Ever had a job for the sake of booze money. And food, as a secondary preference. If he was tossing it away to rent -- well, if he was tossing it away to rent, he'd rather hop off somewhere else. Sleep in the back of the library. Shack up with someone.
"Uh." He offered a tired smile, pausing before he got to his bag. Eyes went to the door, then Breu, trying to decide if he should run. "Minute rice and ramen?"

"Bloody a**..." he growled quietly.
He turned and headed towards the kitchen with a sigh, he expected the other man to bolt. or something of the sort. Maybe that was why he was so damned thin.

Ever watched him go, and then oozed forward again to peer into the kitchen rubbing at the back of his neck and his forehead. It was definitely cautious, chewing on his lower lip, moving slowly.
"I can just leave, if you want." It came out halting, not-quite pouting. Ever really didn't want to. It was cold, his body still ached, and the shower was nice.

Brey sighed and pulled things from the fridge. "Didn't say that..." he replied curtly.
"...PART at least.. if your job goes to the flat and food... the rest is yours... you get lodgings and shower and supper when I'm buggered to cook, you help clean and you'll be learning to cook more than grits...kay?" He called over his shoulder.
"You know the alternative better than me... don't care about yer drinking... stupid american british drinkin age anyhow...tossers..."

The list of requirements made Ever's expression go out of focus again, fuzzy and definitely not happy about it. He looked pitiful, fingers shifting around the doorframe and shoulder butted up against the wood to really consider that.
"...yeah, I think...I'd rather sleep in the subway." The words could have been a joke, but the tone, not so much. Especially not coupled with the way he leaned away and stepped back to hunt down his bag.

Breu scowled at him. He was ******** serious.
".. you'd rather give up shelter, hot water, and hot food than contribute and give up part of yer ******** booze money?" He said stripping away any of the glamor from Ever's statement and laying it to bare bones.
"... your slow in the head aren't you..."

"I do pretty well on all the tests, at least." He flashed Breu a brief smile, stooping slowly to go through his things. Rubbed at his temples again. Why was the hangover lingering this long...? He hadn't even had that much to drink, it wasn't natural.
"I don't want to trade with you." He didn't want the hooks sinking in, and Ever could already feel it happening. Flipped quickly through his things, and shot Breu a look. Brief. Yes, he was more serious now, trying to cling to the fraying edges of his humor and failing.
"I can find more shelter, water, and food. It'll just take me a few days. Never meant to stay here very long anyway."

Breu shook his head and sighed folding his arms. Far be it from him to stop someone who -seemed- of sound mind and body, but who prefered the subway when it was cold as bugger all outside. God forbid he be even semi helpful in the house. "Try the damned shelter then...idiot. When you have your head on strait you can come back around."

"I could stay and argue philosophy with you, if you'd rather." It was brief, almost dismissive; he expected Breu to refuse, and was already zipping his things back up to toss over one shoulder. Now, where had he left his coat...?
"Probably have had about the same education, at this point. It could be diverting." His head still hurt; it took Ever a moment to spot the last of his things and, swinging the bag up onto his shoulder, grab it off the arm of a chair. He swayed just a little.
