"I never said I wasn't," Ren said, somewhat peevishly, as he glared down at the nix. "Besides, maybe that's my intention. I, for one, would be all right with going to the dance looking the way I do now, since this is how I look normally. And don't remind me of all of the 'hard work' you put into fixing my hair," Ren added, his face feeling hot. He had purred. Purred. Somehow the nix had found out one of his deepest, darkest secrets and was now proceeding to not only remind him that he knew it, but Ren knew he'd probably never live it down.
Ever. Ren spluttered a bit, his attempts at staying angry, yet calm dissipating slightly. "I-I - that was a joke," he finally managed to spit out. Face. Turn normal again. PLEASE JACK I AM BEGGING YOU GO BACK TO BEING NORMAL AND NOT RED. "Putting you up for auction and then winning you was so I could torment you, ya big moron! Half of the fun of our relationship is being obnoxious to you, and this was just part of th - "
He stopped. Stared. Face. JACK. He should have known that little stunt at the spin the bottle game would have come back to n** him in the butt. "T-that's something totally different!" he sputtered, letting go of the nix's wrists. "It was just a game, a friendly, casual game! And don't try to force all that on me," Ren added, pointing an accusing finger at Gabrian's face. "You were the one who initiated it in the first place! You could have said no and spun again for a nice, pretty ghoul, but noooo, you chose to kiss me, so there!"
It was a rather childish declaration, and Ren felt more than a little silly saying it, but until he could win this little...squabble of theirs, he was just going to do what he could. Gabrian will NOT win this, not if I can help -
" Eeeerrrkk!"
The tail that slid down his spine was unexpected - as was the totally moronic sounding noise that Ren let out in surprise. If he had thought his face couldn't get any redder than it already was, well, he had just found out otherwise.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" he hissed, attempting to bat Gabe's tail away. "Stop that!"

"Ren?" a beat, and then again, "Ren...? Relax, man, calm down," when his hands were freed from the gryphon's grasp, Gabrian went as far as stretching himself under him, almost as if trying to work out the kinks that his earlier performance (and subsequent tackle) had created, "Whatever made you think that I wasn't as perfectly capable of teasing you as you are me?" after finishing the stretch, he pushed himself back up on his elbows, and seeing as how his friend refused to er... relocate himself, pushed himself back up into a seating position, which effectively left Ren straddling his lap, "Honestly though. Demon," he motioned at himself, "Turn about is fair play. You can't possibly believe that I was just going to allow myself to just take it without retaliating, did you?" he 'tsked' again, but he didn't look particularly upset. In fact, his triumph over the other boil left him calm and very much on top of the situation, "I'd figured the bathroom incident would have warned you of that."
The situation was just so over the top childish that Gabrian couldn't help but snort in amusement; this wasn't his typical derogatory snort that he liked to use when he was trying to tell people how stupid they were. This was quite obviously, an attempt to stop himself from laughing out loud, which ended up in a snort, a hand coming up to cover his mouth as he regarded the other boil, "Seriously, Ren?" he paused and lowered his hand, the grin having turned into a good natured grin, "How was that any different? I might've chosen to kiss you, but you didn't have to deepen it like you did, nor did you have to n** my lip as I retreated. I distinctly recall you initiating both of those," his eyes strayed over to his hair and he closed his eyes, shaking his head with a sigh, "Your hair is just fine. I'm just teasing you at this point. Which by the way, you completely and entirely deserve."
When the gryphon's hiss came, Gabrian lifted his hands in mock defense. Rather than answer Ren's question, he decided to offer one of his own, "Are you going to get off me?" he reached up with a hand and gave his friend a small pat on the shoulder, "I don't do blackmail, Ren," this was in reference to what he'd learned before, "A joke's a joke, but blackmail... that's something else entirely," retreating his hand from the other boil's shoulder, he reached up to grab the lapels of his jacket again, and this time... the gesture seemed entirely different, "Relax, you look fine. We can continue this conversation later; do you really want to be late to the ball? LW is pretty understanding, but Alessa's a touch more strict about these things. Besides... what are you going to tell her as an excuse for getting there late?" no, no, it was just better to go now, "Come on now," a mild shove at Ren's chest slipped the other boil off and Gabrian finally stood up, flattening his clothes back into place.
Then, after a beat, he turned to look down at the gryphon, smile still in place as he offered him a hand, "Besides, the freckles are doing a fine job of hiding the blush."

Gabrian had a point. Ren did not want to admit this, but there was no denying that he had a point. A good one at that, and one that was pretty much irrefutable.
Life is so unfair. Ren didn't move when Gabrian sat up, stubbornly keeping his position in his lap. It was probably - most definitely - childish of him, but Ren was beginning to get the sneaking suspicion that he had, in fact, lost this round to Gabrian. That had not been the purpose of his winning the auction; the nix had somehow managed to turn the entire situation around on him, without Ren even realizing it until it was too late.
Unfair. Life is way too unfair. Not to mention that it was, unfortunately, a rather impressive turn around from Ren's original game plan. Gabrian was smart, Ren knew that, but he hadn't ever expected something like this.
"No, I didn't," he admitted grudgingly, letting out a small huff. "But what can I say? An attractive, obviously stubborn guy chooses to kiss you but makes a big deal out of how he doesn't want to? I couldn't let the opportunity pass by."
The realization that Gabrian wasn't going to hold the whole purring thing over his head constantly came as a surprise to Ren and he blinked, momentarily quieted. This provided Gabe with enough leverage to maneuver himself out from underneath him, toppling Ren over onto the floor in the process.
He was right. Of course he was right. Gabrian was almost always right. That was ridiculously annoying, but...it didn't anger Ren like it would have with anyone else. If it had been anyone else other than the nix, Ren would have seen fit to kick him in a place where it wouldn't be so happy. But the fact that it was Gabrian made the situation more bearable.
Though he still couldn't get rid of that Jackdamned blush on his face. Ren let out a sullen harrumph, reaching up to take Gabrian's hand and hauled himself to his feet, moving to straighten his slightly disheveled vest.
"Don't expect me not to retaliate later, by the way," he said, somewhat sulkily, but he wasn't really mad. On the contrary, he was merely pouting because of the stupid redness to his face that would not go away. "And...fix my hair again, since you messed it up.
Ren paused. Then mumbled "Thank you. For the, y'know. Adorable comment. With the...purring...thing."

His fingers curled around Ren's hand and the demon tugged him up to his feet, "No, no you didn't," he arched a brow as he brushed off his clothes, turning a critical eye on his friend's own set, a hand reaching up to rearrange the bow tie and other things they'd messed up in the uh... rough housing, per se, "Actually, I'd like to note that you were the one that kissed me the deepest out of all the people I kissed that night, Ren. Also the only one that dared n** me, and I kissed a whole bunch of people during that game," when he was sattisfied with how the bow tie looked, he lifted his hand just a moment and then brought it down to pat the gryphon on the shoulder. Despite his best efforts to keep the whole situation as normal as possible, Gabrian just couldn't help one last comment back at him, "You think I'm stubborn but attractive?" he turned to smirk up at his friend, obviously amused before giving him another pat. This time though, it was almost a small push as he brushed past him in the direction of the bathroom.
A chuckle was heard from within as he retrieved the brush, and he passed the item from hand to hand while emerging, "Yes well, as I said earlier; you'll retaliate, then I will think of something else to get back at you with and we'll come full circle," something about the way he said it though seemed to indicate that he didn't really hate this game all that much. In fact, if his expression was any indication, the nix got some sort of a kick out of it. He'd never had the oportunity to befriend someone he was so comfortable around that he could open up in this way. Revenge wasn't always a physical, hurtful thing. It could very well be a game; it all depended on the intentions of the other party and he knew Ren well enough to know that nothing the gryphon did was intended to be done in a hurtful way.
That made all the difference, as far as Gabrian was concerned, "I'll fix your hair; just turn around," the way he handled his friend had changed from before quite abysmally. The touch was still gentle, granted, but it was clear he was not aiming to make the other boil feel uncomfortable. Amusingly enough though, he was doing most of what he'd done earlier; when the brush passed through the strands of hair, his free hand's fingers followed, soothing out any knots they might have created during their little tiff, "You're... welcome," his hand stilled in Ren's hair as he answered, but soon enough kept moving, "I know cute and adorable, Ren. That purring was rather near the top of my list, you know. I'd never heard anyone purr," he didn't sound teasing now, his voice having gone back to normal. When he was sure the hair was correctly brushed, he set a hand on top of the gryphon's head, "You know, we all deserve a good brushing every so often. We all deserve a good ear scratching when things go wrong; if you don't want to tell Alessa about it because you're embarrassed... when you're having a bad day, come find me," he knew the pressure Ren was under due to his family, after all, "You know where to find me," he reached up to rub the other boil's ear briefly like he would have a loved pet's and then lowered his hand down to his side, "You're like the brother I never had."

Ren was attempting to figure out if it was possible for one's face to stay permanently red. If it was...well, then, he was certainly in a bit of trouble here.
A lot of trouble. He scowled. "There's nothing wrong with having a bit of fun every now and then," he said peevishly, reaching a hand up to rub the back of his neck. "I merely took the opportunity to...kiss an attractive guy more during a situation that was advantageous to me."
Ren paused. Smirked. Then said "Besides, you know I was the best kisser out of everyone that night. There's no denying that fact."
There was that flush again. That Jackdamned blush. "Stubborn, yes," Ren called after Gabrian as the nix disappeared into the bathroom. He took the chance alone to reach up quickly, rubbing at his face as a sort of pathetic attempt to dispel some of the overwhelming redness that was obnoxiously refusing to disappear. He dropped his hands, however, when Gabrian reappeared with the brush, Ren's expression vaguely pouty. "As for the attractive thing..." Well, there was no point in denying it. "Is it so wrong with thinking someone is attractive? I have a feeling it'll inflate your ego way too much, but yes, I do think you're attractive. Probably more so than is actually fair to the entire boil population at this school, but still."
He lifted a brow. That was true, yes. It would be a cycle for them; tease, taunt, get revenge, tease, taunt, get revenge...with any other person Ren would have grown bored of it, and with any other person he wouldn't have felt so...comfortable. Relaxed. ...safe? around. Gabrian was different from any person that Ren had met before, but something about the nix made him feel...normal. It was as if he could be himself - really himself, not the elitist facade he used to wear at home and at parties, and not the easygoing, playful face he put on while at school.
Ren turned around almost automatically, letting Gabrian reach up, running the brush through his hair. He felt gentle fingers move through the strands, untangling any knots, and a purr thrummed through him again, unintentionally. Ren rubbed his forehead, looking embarrassed, but he didn't try to hide it this time. "I rather know how you are with cute and adorable," he replied dryly, sliding his eyes back to look at the nix. "Considering that all of the pets you own could fall under that category."
Lapsing into silence for a moment, Ren let Gabrian finish brushing his hair, the purring growing briefly louder at the hand that scratched his ear. He closed his eyes, allowing himself - just for now - to enjoy the scratching, breathing slowly.
"You're like the brother I never had."
Ren's eyes shot open again and he blinked. "W...what..?" he stammered, momentarily stunned into idiocy. He opened his mouth several attempts, as if trying to say something, but nothing came out. At least, nothing resembling actual words.
No one had ever said anything like that to him before, ever. Ren had grown up only with a single sister, older than him by all of three minutes - though Medieval looked and acted like she was years older than him anyway, so it really made no difference. They had been close - once. It had been a long...long...time since he had spoken to Medieval the way he used to, back when they were still kids and before their parents had corrupted her thinking. Medieval even admitting that she had a brother nowadays was rare; most of the time she preferred to ignore that very basic fact of life. So the idea that someone considered him to be that close was...crazy. Insane.
Unbelievable.
"I, uh..." Ren said, not looking at Gabrian as he stepped forward. He kept his face turned away, moving towards the desk where he'd set down the gloves and cufflinks. His fingers moved over them almost nervously, and he hoped the nix wouldn't notice the way they shook. "T-thank you. For my hair, I mean."
Snapping on the cufflinks, he let out a somewhat odd sounding laugh, still refusing to turn his head to look at the nix. Everything growing up had taught him that family was a joke, that there was no such thing, that all family was good for was stabbing you in the back. There's no way...
"Come on," Ren said, in what he hoped was a normal sounding voice, moving to find his jacket. "We're going to be late meeting the girls."

The way the other boil relaxed as he brushed his hair was quite... well, Gabrian wasn't sure what it was; there were no words that he could think of, off the top of his head to describe it. Pleasant seemed to come near, but it didn't quite reach the level of innocent intimacy the situation seemed to radiate, "Maybe you were," he drawled out as he brushed the hair, "Maybe you weren't. I believe LW topped you though, I'm sorry to burst your bubble. Granted, she did it outside the game, but still," a low chuckle and he lowered his voice, a teasing tone to it, "You came in a close second," it was thanks to him being behind the gryphon that the nix missed seeing the renewed blush but at the same time... he no longer needed to see it to know it was there.
After a few beats, during which he'd fallen silent, choosing to listen to the rather adorable purr Ren was allowing himself to release, Gabrian spoke up, "Hmmm... you'd be surprised how deflated my so called ego is, for the most part actually," there was a moment of hesitation, during which his hand stilled in the gryphon's hair and the demon was glad the other boil was facing the other way, "Yes well... if I were into boils, which I never said I was," he murmured, "I'd probably pick someone just like you," and this was starting to sound way too awkward for him to take (He just hoped he'd done a better job at fighting the blush than Ren was). As such, he gave his friend's hair one last brush, allowing the strands to fall between his fingers one last time before taking the ribbon he'd previously used to tie his hair in the bathroom. He reached up and redid the pony tail, tying up the ribbon into a small bow before pulling away, offering his friend's back a small pat on the back, "You're all done."
He noticed the fact he'd caught the gryphon off guard, and for one short moment, Gabrian couldn't help but feel a small swell of triumph; he was not nearly as untouchable as he liked to think himself to be, and this never ceased to amuse him, "You're welcome," he said simply, allowing his previous comment to go unanswered for the time being, figuring the other boil would address it once he'd had a good ponder. As Ren left his side to fiddle with his cufflinks, the demon reached up and arranged his own hair into the neat pony tail he'd sported upon entering the dorm room; it had become undone too and honestly... he didn't want to have to explain to LW why he looked like he'd just jumped out of bed after fetching Ren, "Yes," he drawled out as he finished messing with his own hair, his own ribbon tied in place, "Yes we are," and that said, he moved for the door, making a show of opening and bowing slightly for his friend, smirk still in place, "After you, my dear," the teasing tone was back, "Let me escort you to the ball."

"Mmmm I'll have to remember that," Ren murmured, amused by the nix's comments about LW. "Though since it was out of the game, it technically doesn't count."
It was difficult to say just how he felt at the moment. The relaxation and comfort that had come from Gabe's warm, gentle fingers in his hair had dissipated, replaced by a feeling of awkward nervousness as he fiddled with the cufflinks. He felt rather (stupidly) pleased to know that if Gabe had been into boils, he'd pick someone like him. Not that he was looking for a romantic entanglement with the nix, but it felt like a nice compliment to his self esteem all the same. It at least meant that he was doing something right.
...right?
Brother. Ren's face felt hot, fingers still trembling slightly as he reached up, running them down the neat ponytail Gabrian had tied back. It was done perfectly, of course, and Ren could feel somewhat more confident in himself now that he knew he was at least a little bit more presentable. He reached down, straightening the black silk pinstripe vest he was wearing, tugging it more snugly around his waist and then pushed back a stray golden strand, tucking it back into the ponytail. Ren closed his eyes briefly, exhaling slowly, and then turned around to face Gabrian, smirking at the bowing nix.
"Why thank you," he said primly, stepping out into the hallway. On impulse he reached out, linking his arm playfully with the other's. "Lead the way, Sir Snake."
Brother, hmmm? Ren thought as they walked. He cast a surreptitious glance back up at Gabrian.
It has a nice ring to it.
