The curious and mildly confused look on his face remained until she mentioned her mother and learning on her own, and then the expression cleared as a lop-sided grin appeared. "Ohh, you were home-schooled," he said with an understanding nod. "I've met plenty of people that were home-schooled, don't feel bad." It usually made things harder later on, as they didn't have the daily social interaction with all their classmates or a set learning environment, but some of them were still successful.

"Oh, then you should have no problem learning Spanish then," he said with a chuckle and a grin. "English is supposedly really hard to learn as a second language, so Spanish should be a piece of cake. If you want to practice it conversationally you'll need to know how to pronounce everything - but that's what the internet is for anyway, so teaching yourself shouldn't be too hard, I don't think." Or maybe it would be - he had no idea. He had classes to learn from, and used the internet as a secondary means of education when it came to the subject. Not that he used it as much as he did in earlier years, but it was still there if he needed it.

"Ah, I suppose that's right..." It was less homeschool and more manners and etiquette drills, though, with her mother placing greater importance on how to carry oneself as a lady than she did on real education. Recollections of her mother and her childhood brought less than pleasant memories to the forefront of her thoughts, and she chased them away when she realized the quiet conflict that was beginning to settle on her features.

"I pick up things fairly quickly," she said, appreciating the general lightheartedness of the subject. "Maybe I'll buy some study resources the next time I'm in town." At the very least, no one could accuse her of ever giving less than her best at anything.

"Ah, bien," he commented, raising both hands and lacing his fingers together at the back of his head. He suddenly realized they'd come to the end of that conversation - there wasn't anything else he could think to say about it, or to add, and since he'd had the last lame comment it fell to him to figure out something else to talk about.

Uhh...

"So what brings you to the forest?" Completely original, but it was all he could think of for the moment. Leilani suddenly shoved her face into his chest, crooning at him and leaning up to nuzzle his shoulder. He nearly fell over at the unexpected show of affection, so he put a hand on her nose with a soft "se calma, mi linda" to quiet her. He knew she would much rather be included in the conversation or, if not, then at least they should all be heading somewhere. Her attention span wasn't exactly spectacular.

She folded her arms behind her and leaned backwards against one of Pitre's legs. "I thought I'd like to see Elemi Lake. I was considering maybe camping there for the night, but I'm not very familiar with the area so I'm not sure if that'll work out..." A smile returned to her face in response to Leilani's antics. She definitely reminded her of Fleur, except maybe more affectionate - if that was even possible.

At the mention of the word 'camp' Leilani immediately crooned happily and pranced in a circle before halting between the pair, and began to do her happy dance - which consisted of her hind feet staying in place while the forefeet alternated between one on the ground and one lifted in the air, switching back and forth from one to the other fairly quickly. Camp! Camping? Camping! She loved camping!

"Leilani," Inigo chuckled, reaching a hand out to pat her shoulder, "no, mi linda, no nos - se calma, porfa." At his words her antennae drooped and she stopped mid-dance with one foot in the air, which slowly lowered to the ground with a disappointed "niuu.."

The brown-skinned teen turned back to Aila with his lop-sided grin still present, trying to figure out how to respond to that. "Sorry, she thought we were going camping too - but if you have the right supplies it's incredibly easy to camp for the night. I've done it plenty of times before, even though I don't have to. I love over in Sandalwood, so my parents would much rather have me sleep at home than camp somewhere." Not that that had ever stopped him from doing it before.

Leilani's dance brought a quiet laugh from Aila. "Sorry," she said, her smile apologetic, as she reached to lay a hand on the Meganium's head. She was a sweet thing, that grass-type, and Aila felt the subtle rise of guilt to have so quickly built up her hopes and then, almost simultaneously, dashed them. Passively she listened to the foreign words Inigo spoke, paying closer attention to their pronunciation than to their meaning. Meaning was something that could be learned from a book, but pronunciation required one to hear a voice.

"In Sandalwood? It must be nice to always be so close to the forest. I'll admit I'm a bit envious." She would need to properly visit Sandalwood at some point; the environment in which it existed was captivating. "I've done a bit of camping since I've started traveling, but never in the woods." She shifted her weight slightly, attempting to find a more comfortable position for her hip. Pitre, noting this, removed his leg from behind the human, dipping to catch her on the flat of his wide body when she stumbled backwards and lifting her onto the impromptu seat. Aila, quite flustered by her sudden repositioning, leaned forward to chide the Metagross, "A little warning next time, if you please."

Leilani recovered just as quickly as her mood had sunk, and she crooned happily and nuzzled Aila's hand. It seemed like nothing could really upset this pokemon for very long at all. The benefits of a short attention span.

"Yeah," he confirmed with a nod as she spoke of the town nearby, "it's very nice to live so close. I'm a botany major at la universidad, so whenever I'm not working with plants in classes I'm usually around here," Inigo said as he extended an arm and hand, the gesture suggesting the entire forest. "The lake, too, because there's some flowers that bloom there that aren't anywhere else in the forest."

The Meganium cooed at the mention of the lake and flowers, obviously gleeful about something in relation to one of the two. Then again, she was always happy about something or other.

"Oh, botany?" Aila couldn't confess to any similar interest in the area apart from investigating the plausibility of turning Fleur's Sleep Powder into sleep bombs, and even that was more pokemon research than plant research. She was no less envious of this, though - the chance to attend a university was one that she would likely never have. "Out of curiosity, what sort of research do you do?"

Mention of the lake, and the Meganium's reaction to that mention, reminded Aila that she had intended to research the destination in time for sunset. Ah, but what if Inigo had things to do and couldn't accompany her there? Hesitant to bring it up and possibly end their conversation mid-subject, she kept the thought quiet.

When Aila didn't mention the lake, one of her reasons for coming to the forest in the first place, he figured something of the sort - that she wanted to go but didn't want to be rude, which was the concern of so many people. Don't be rude, be polite, don't chew with your mouth open - that sort of thing. But inner monologue aside, he moved to the Meganium next to him, patted her neck, and with a quick movement he was on her back. If Aila was going to ride, there was no reason why he couldn't, too. Plus Leilani didn't mind in the slightest - she actually seemed to enjoy giving her trainer rides. So, with a gesture to one side and easily steering Lei in that direction, he suggested "the lake's this way, we can check it out and find a good camping spot before it gets too dark." Finding one without a good source of light wasn't exactly a walk in the park.

He didn't need to motion for Lei to go anywhere, or guide where she should go - she knew they were going to the lake, knew exactly where it was, and he knew that telling her where to go or how to get there would be utterly superfluous and a waste of time. At Aila's question of research, however, he chuckled, and his lop-sided grin took on several qualities similar to that of a smirk. "Research for school, or -- research for myself?" His tone of voice and the meaningful pause clearly hinted at an obvious difference between the two.

Aila was pleasantly surprised that Inigo made motions towards proceeding to the lake. Hopefully the suggestion was made in coincidence with her thoughts; more rude than suddenly excusing oneself from a conversation was blatantly hinting through expression and body language towards the same end. Nonetheless, she was grateful that he had taken the initiative, and she quietly urged Pitre to proceed after the Meganium. His lumbering footsteps started anew, slowly at first and increasing to match Leilani's pace.

His laughter and his wording caused her to incline her head slightly, curious as to his meaning. "Well... Both, I suppose, if they're different," as he was clearly implying the were.

Leilani happily tromped through the soft grass, headed for the lake. Ohh, how she loved the lake! She didn't even think to see if her pace was too fast or not - they were going to the lake!

Inigo chuckled again, green eyes focusing ahead of the traveling pair for the moment. "At la universidad, I mostly do lab work and projects, so I research what they tell us to, or what subjects we can pick - plant growth, metabolism, development - that sort of thing," he explained. "It's interesting and I love the subject, but I've recently been interested in more... practical research." Insert meaningful pause. "What if you could apply the studies done on plant growth etc, to grass pokemon? I think it makes a great deal of sense. Of course that's not exactly botany anymore, but I suppose some sort of combination," he said with a shrug. Either way it didn't matter to him - it was a fascinating subject all the same, one he intended to fully research to his heart's content.

Aila tilted her head in interest at mention of applying his studies to pokemon. "That does sound practical. You could probably make a lot of improvements in grass-types by applying that sort of research." She crossed her legs at the ankles, turning her gaze up into the bordering tree branches with a thoughtful hum. "I've been considering doing a bit of research in that area myself. Not anything fancy - I'd just like to be able to use my Venusaur's Sleep Powder without her necessarily being at my side. Something like a powder bomb...? I'm not really sure." She was at least mildly embarrassed by her own lack of knowledge on the subject, though she fought to keep that embarrassment from her features.

A thought came to her, though - one that, due to her place in society, had not been a part of her initial reaction, "I'm surprised the university sanctions that sort of research. Ethical restrictions seem to be fairly strict when it comes to pokemon." Not that she minded all that much herself. In addition to faithful comrades, pokemon were also excellent tools, and there was scarcely anything unethical in polishing ones tools.

He nodded enthusiastically, his ever-present lop-sided grin widening at the fact someone else shared his views. "Si, it makes so much sense," he said again with another nod, steering the simple-minded Meganium away from trees. He had no intention of ripping the sides of his pantlegs today. "I'd need to do quite a bit of research to figure everything out and the like - and I'd never experiment on mi amor Leilani," he said as he affectionately patted the grass-type's head as she crooned happily at him, "so I'd need to get another grass-type to experiment on. Ah, powder bombs?" Inigo practically lit up at the mention of them. "I can make those, actually, to use with my slingshot. They're not too difficult to make, but I have more Poison Powder bombs than anything else, as that's all Leilani has." He really wished she had Sleep Powder at least, or Stun Spore. "I still have others though, I doubt anyone at la universidad has noticed the slight decrease in their stock," the green-eyed young man said with a chuckle.

A brown-skinned hand slipped into a large pocket of his jeans and pulled out a carved piece of light-colored wood, a thick band of some sort of material attached to the ends. He displayed it for Aila to see as he pulled a small, dark purple ball out of his pocket. How the small selection of bombs in his pocket hadn't exploded when he fell out of the tree was beyond him. "I use dried apricorns as the outer shells," he explained as he held the slingshot in his left hand and placed the purple sphere into the large section in the middle of the band, then pulled it back quite a few inches. Aiming at a tree close by but not so close as to have any chance of infecting either pokemon, he continued to explain while steadying his aim. He was more used to aiming from a stationary position instead of on the back of his Meganium, who had a terrible gait. "I use them with my slingshot because just throwing them doesn't make them explode - not enough force," he explained, "but with a slingshot..." Here he released the sphere, and it shot through the air momentarily before colliding with the side of the tree with a loud popping noise, and a large cloud of light purple dust puffed out in a sort of misshapen mushroom cloud.

"Ah," he chuckled, not missing a beat after his demonstration had ended. "They don't sanction it - I'd be expelled if they knew about it, so I can't do it there. I have to do it all at home, but I keep all the notes and research well hidden, just in case." In a box under his bed. Well hidden... Right.

Aila nodded as he explained his limitations in the research. She could name a place that would give him a grass-type pokemon for his research if he needed one, but she certainly wasn't about to divulge such information to a stranger, likely not even to a friend. One brush with endangering Team Rocket was more than enough.

Her features betrayed her surprise that Inigo had already found the solution to her curiosity, and she watched in rapt attention as he demonstrated. "Oh, apricorns?" And here she had been thinking she would need to make some kind of plastic container. "I've seen Liam working with apricorns... I wonder if he would lend me some," she said, her internal thoughts forming on her voice. She continued to watch as he raised the slingshot and identified its purpose, frowning slightly. "I'm not sure I know how to use a slingshot..." Maybe she could carve the hard surface of the apricorn to make it thinner and more responsive to impact? But then she would run the risk of the things exploding in storage, which would be highly counter-conducive to the completion of missions.

Her frown deepened slightly to hear that it was indeed not a sanctioned study. "But then what happens if you make a breakthrough? It sounds like they wouldn't accept your research even if you made progress with it." And all that work would go straight to waste.

Aila's mention of someone named Liam was largely ignored, and he continued on with his explanations. "Apricorns work well because they're easily gutted and thin, so when they're dry and they hit something solid with enough force they break apart, and the dust will spread out more. I don't know if anyone can make them so they explode when you throw them, but I imagine those'll be more dangerous because they'd explode easier." He'd fallen out of a tree and his still didn't explode. Granted he didn't land on that side, which was likely the reason why they didn't go off all at once in his pocket, but whatever. Point was they didn't explode as easily.

He waved away her lack of knowledge of the useful slingshot. "They're really easy to use, I can teach you if you want." Aiming properly was the hard part, but it was really more common sense than anything else. "It's.. Well, it's sort of like archery. Have you ever used a bow and arrow?" This analogy was probably included due to the fact a bow was his weapon of choice.

"If I make a breakthrough?" Green eyes scanned the line of trees as he hummed thoughtfully, catching sight of the setting sun reflecting off a smooth, glassy surface not too far away. They were almost to the lake. After a thoughtful pause, he shrugged. "No se. I suppose I'll use it for myself - maybe make super powerful grass-types or something. I don't know if anyone would really care for that sort of research if everyone calls it immoral." Or inhumane, or whatever term they liked. Nonsense, it was science! A brilliant science he intended to research fully regardless of who would be interested or not - not that he'd ever be able to find anyone who would be significantly intrigued if he did make a breakthrough with it.
