I think she was only asking about the newspaper thing so she would know to look out for him in there since he most likely wouldn't be able to communicate with his hometown very often.
And the becoming famous before saving her part. I think that she correlated becoming famous with becoming a very powerful fighter. How can he rescue her without being a powerful fighter?
I don't think Tifa is meant to come across as some kind of gold-digger/power-hungry gal.

i understand your thoughts completely, but there other traits of a hero besides just strength and I dont think tifa understood that

Yeah... but when you're a little girl, strength means a great deal. Well, taht, and how're you supposed to beat the threat if you aren't strong enough to hold your own against it. Also: The reason he doesn't want to promise would mostly stem from the age. It's not that he WOULDN'T save her, it's mroe that he didn't want to promise because he was around 9 or 10, until mass media, boys weren't really thinking about girls as anything more than a separate species. So where girls want a "Hero to save them"/"be their's", most boys, when they're younger, DON'T want to be some girl's hero.

Anotehr thing: I don't agree with the whole "originally, there was no Tifa" rumor, Have you SEEN the author's works? They're so thoroughly thought out that he had most of the game planned out before he actually started working. It's literally impossible for him to add another character for absolutely NO reason, he'd've had to change ALL his work up to that point, and NO game developer would willingly agree to that.

Me niether, and I'm a FFVII freak. I'm literally debating (with my life) on another thread about who would win between Cloud and Dart (Legend of Dragoon).

But I have heard nothing of the Aeris promise thing, it wouldn't make a lot of sense, although it would really kill Cloud even more if he broke a promise because he couldn't protect her.

o! cloud promised aerith that he'd go take her on the airship...someday.
and he protected her in the beginning(bodyguard) otherwise they really didnt make any promises

hey hey, I was a little girl once dont try and sterotype because you cant say that unless you know for a FACT every little girl thinks strength is oh so important...and unless you've been a little girl you dont have the right to assume

I'm not trying to say that he wouldn't save tifa because he would, its just the escence of the promise wasnt good...a promise is an agreement between two people not what one person wants so thats the point I wanted to get across

and yes I agree with you on the "originally no tifa"

Tifa brought up the fact about the newspaper to see if cloud was even real serious about it. I mean if you had a friend who wanted to be a general in the army you'd make damn sure they wanted to be good at first right? And the Promise was so that Tifa could have her whole fairy-tale s**t thing going on. I don't mind it. Personally I'm into chivalry and all that. I think She just wanted to be in a fairy tale. Even so she did like him alot. So she wanted cloud to be her knight in shining armor. BIG WHOOP!

being in the newspaper doesnt show how serious you are it shows if you are famous, I doubt you hear about the hardest working employee in whatever! being in the newspaper doesnt show your skill, the newspaper is just another form of media

well actually when you say "Even so she did like him alot"
she didnt. when they were younger cloud had a crush on tifa, but tifa didnt like him that way, a reason for why she was late. also...when sepiroth threw tifa in neblihiem(sp?)cloud got over his crush for tifa because he thought she was dead.He was sad but he got over it. 5 years passed So when she sees him again at her bar he doesnt really care about that "promise" which he forgot, she started to like him at this point not in the past

! I almost forgot:
"the Promise was so that Tifa could have her whole fairy-tale s**t thing going on"
well I've been trying to say this the whole time...if it doesnt bother you why post? the reason for this topic was to show to people that the promise really wasnt a confirmation of love because if thats what you or anyone else thought I wanted to prove that wrong

"Personally I'm into chivalry and all that"
your fondness for chilvary has nothing at all to do with this topic

Wow, i can tell there are a lot of feelings on both sides. *looks at the room which looks much like an unorganized debate competition. She gazes from one group to the other.* Can i say something?

Alright, how i take this whole thing is just this. When tifa asks cloud to promise that he will come and rescue her and he doesnt answer..she keeps asking because he had drifted off into thought. She could see that, he wasnt there completely when they were talking. The last time when he actually answered, i dont think he even was still listening. He just said it....then again if he really did hear her i believe he did mean it because i dont think he would have had he not. She didnt force him at all. He was hesitant because he wasnt paying attention.

Now now, dont start yelling at me, im just telling you how i interperet the game. Which is another thing i would like to add while im on that part. One thing i learned and knew a little before i was looking around on here is that everyone takes the game different ways. We all say the names different and we all read body language and the way things are said in our own ways. Thats the way the rps are made so you are able to make your own decisions and build on what you think. Why do you think they give you choices when your playing the game?? YOU are molding the characters and making them what YOU want them to be. Yes the writer has ideas but thats just how the rps are made, because it makes it more fun for us to be able to look at the story and take from it what we want or need to.

Anyway, The paper seems to be another problem. *sighs* The paper is a form of media therfore communication. Someone did make that point and im sorry but if i have someone i care for going away, i would want them to be famous to be in the paper, and do you want to know why? So i would know they are ok. I would want to know what and how they were doing. Its part of caring for someone. She wasnt being a gold digger she was just trying to show him she cared for him and wanted him to be alright.

Now for my own personal reference, because i dont remember this ever when i was playing the game. Now keep in mind and i will state this here and now. When in the game is Tifa ever clingy or all over Cloud. I dont remember her ever being more than would be expected. And to tell you the truth if Cloud really didnt want the attention or anything like that im sure he would have said something. Anyway if someone can give me examples which im sure a few will..of when Tifa was clingy. I want to make my own judgement.

Im starting to get the idea that people who have something against Tifa for some reason are trying to make her worse than she is. The thing is is that we all have characters that annoy us or just dont attract us at all. I for one dont really see the point in having Amarant or Quinna in IX. But thats just me. And why is it always Tifa? I mean if you wanna go on slutty just by looking at clothes (cus thats all you really have to work on) Half of the girls in games dress the same...heck look at Yuffie, Rikku, Lulu, Selfie....they all have some part of their wardrobe that could be considered slutty. I mean why does everyone attack Tifa. She isnt a slut and like ive said in another part of the tread, She doesnt even extend that idea in any part of the game that i thought. Look at the fact that she was part of Avalanch with all those guys, was never implyed that she was selling herself or trying to. The only guy i wasnt sure on was barret. I didnt understand the relationship between her and barrett....sometimes it seemed they were together but deep down she still loved Cloud so im not sure. Anyway i have said my peace for now so im gonna step away and let you all gretique my post.

*backs away and waits*

Yes, that is wht I interpeted, and I will get flames and stuff for this, but I HATE Tifa.....I'm sorry, and there I said it. But she is just so clingy and annoying in teh game!

omg i feel the exact same way! and what i really hate is when guys like her only because of her boobs... stare ...not her personality

You two have voiced my opinions on her perfectly. She's some super martial artist that trained under Zangan, yet she's all over Cloud trying to get him to save her like in some far-fetched romance novel? Hmm.

oh yes, I agree with both of you guys on that! I thoguht I was the only one....yay !I'm not the only one!

Ah... Sige, sige...

Now, when you look at this promise man, you gotta realize the promise was made way back when, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY back when man...
With that in mind, you gotta realize one dealy about little girls. Not saying this about all girls, but some want a knight in shining armour by her side. Cloud was a close friend of hers, and she really wanted him to be able to help her out if she was "in a pinch."
She was, a very strong girl, man. You gotta know that, I mean, didn't she run up to Sephiroth trying to fight? She didn't hide behind Cloud and yell at him to avenge her father for her, didn't she? She put her life at risk and went to take Seph out.

See, Tifa just really wanted to know that someone had her back. She fought man, she fought with all her being, with all she freaking had, man
After the promise was made, she started to train to learn how to fight, and never did she hide behind the fray, man. She was ther and did her part, man, but let me ask you this

The girl was to fight, in a world full of corruption and death, du. No matter how strong you are, it's good to know someone is behind you, and will be there if you are in need. Would you want to live in this world, knowing there is NO ONE beside you to help you out, and you had to fight all your battles alone?

Anyway, that's my two cents on the promise, and on Tif...

I agree with Jhay, it seemed, TO ME, that it was in fact a 'have my back' sort of deal, though she was also a little caught up in having her night in shining armor moment...I can't say Cloud didn't want to take up the promise...He just seemed a bit out of it really, like what Succubus stated. He didn't seem hesitant with reluctance. No it wasn't some love binding promise, but a promise between friends...that's all... No big...anyone who'd try and use it to justify a love bond between Tifa and Cloud, would have a pretty brittle base for an argument.

One thing though..i don't think it was...'low' of her, she didn't seem to be forcing, more like just a plead.. for him to just make a decision-in favor of her of course..If I was asked something like that, I'd only be hesitant because I wouldn't be sure if I could follow through, considering my age and the difficulty in becoming a SOLDIER...and well he liked her then...it might've been shocking and overwhelming. He didnt roll his eyes, or shake his head, and run away in fear..he stared zoned out for a while then came back and out and back...ADD?...or just pondering?..not sure..but in the end he nodded, and seemed to be sure of himself, determined even...but that's just me...

Heh, I'm actually a Tifa fan..but don't beat me up for it. hahah.

I'll admit up front that I'm a big fan of Aeris, but I like Tifa too. While it's true that she's sort of clingy, keep in mind that she's only nineteen, and still emotionally unsettled. Despite that, she's incredibly caring, and she went to great lengths to save Cloud, and sat by his side even when he was in a near-coma. I don't think she was insincere when she asked Cloud to make the Promise, but rather that she's an inarticulate speaker. ^_^

PS: Aeris still owns all. I just think Tifa did a good job taking over.

Yes i agree tifa does seem like the type to want to be saved but at the time she made cloud promise her that she couldnt save her self and i dont think that she even knew what she was going to do with her life and then here comes this kid whos going of to live his dream and all she wants is to be there know that when she is in trouble that the great hero that he plans to be will save her is that so wrong?
