"If I told you I might have to kill you." He taunted. "I could show you..." He added with a wicked glint in his eyes, raising one hand in utter mockery, He was unsure if she would make a good agent at all, she was someone he might remain 'on the fence' about for the rest of his days. Smart but trouble, and what would Wolframite do if he turned her, not happy he suspected even WITH the divide between them.
Love or what passed for it did rather like to sink its claws in deep.

Then what was the point of this whole exercise? Seriously? She felt like she'd given up one of her bargaining chips for just about nothing. They turned a corner into a shady little side-street--shady for the fact that there were only shuttered windows, no doors, no lights--as Tate made a frustrated noise in the back of her throat. She paused, looked around for a moment, and then cursed. Her tone wasn't angry, more distracted. "Wrong turn," she said, to herself, and turned around as Zinkenite was reaching for her chest.

She couldn't help it--fear instinctively choked her, right then, she could barely breathe through the terror. And where two months ago she would have fled like a deer before the Jeep that would kill it, Tate balled up a fist and slammed it into the short Negaverse officer's face. It wouldn't hurt him very badly, probably not, and not for very long, but hopefully it'd shock him enough--

"Pervert," she said when he didn't press the attack, the tone of her voice rather weak.

Shock flashed through his eyes then anger, familiar anger that surged him forward, unnaturally strong as he shoved her hard into the wall. "Let...me...make... TWO things...CLEAR." He said through teeth gritted against the pain that throbbed through his punched cheek.
"I am not...interested in your CHEST, or your ANYTHING ELSE... I do not...like girls." he said through clenched teeth. "NOR do I like being struck... are ...we...clear?"

The terror of a moment before was nothing compared to how she felt at that moment. It was overwhelming, mind-blanking horror--too far was the only thought she could hold in her head. She'd pushed too far, too fast and now she was going to die. Tate braced herself, tense against the brick wall of the tiny side street, her back throbbing in time with her heartbeat. She concentrated on that, and only belatedly realized Zink had been talking.

Didn't really take a genius to realize what he wanted, since it didn't appear to be her immediate, painful demise. "Crystal," she said, breathily. It was really more like a squeak.

"Thank you..." He said with almost unnerving sudden calm and clarity, even civility in his voice and released her. He paused and then quirked a smile... he still had the coffee in one hand though it was slightly sloshed over the fingers of his glove.
He offered it to her... "There... for shock, it has enough sugar in it that even my partner would enjoy it I think..."

Tate didn't seem much inclined to move until there was the offer of coffee. He hadn't even spilled very much of it, and her gaze turned less... empty as she realized this. Ugh. Was she not even important enough to spill his coffee over?

That was stupid, though. She should be thankful she was alive, she thought, feeling a bit weak in the knees as she rose off the pavement. "No," she said, "I don't want it." Childish, but Tate was always childish when she was afraid. It was an attempt to make herself seem more adult, braver. It backfired and she knew it, but she couldn't help it.

"Maybe you should give it to your partner," she said darkly, resentfully.

He made small tisk sounds, the tip of his tongue tsking against the roof of his mouth and the back of his teeth. "Now now... don't spoil your moment of bravado with petty resentment. Most people would have done something truly disgusting and demeaning if they knew as much as you do and were faced with that... even at my height." He sniffed the coffee as though to make sure it was still good.
"Forgot I was holding that... interesting." coldly analytical. For one mad moment he was tempted to ask her if he thought to much...everyone seemed to be saying that these days. There had been a window of no thought though, he was still unsure if that was a good thing.
However... do assuage her bruised ego, currently all flustered and puffed up like one of those tiny pufferfish that they sold at the local pet shop he decided to offer her a sliver of information to chew on.
"Any time that a lieutenant is promoted to captain, they have to grab our starseed, it actually hurts more than what we do to anyone else... make of that what you will." He pried at the plastic lid on the coffee to blow across it before re-seating it and taking a sip.

"I think we're done here for the evening...don't you?"

It didn't have a thing to do with his height. It hadn't even crossed her mind, really, and she shoved her hands into her pockets to quell the shaking. All of that for nothing, what a ******** waste--

--but he wasn't done talking, and what she got wasn't for nothing. Any time a lieutenant was promoted to captain? That... She could do something with that. Where was Taranis when she needed him?...

She just nodded, shoving her hands into her pockets. "We're done," she said, still tremulous, obviously bitter. But not antagonistic, which... may or may not have been important. She turned and left the alley, hooking a left to take the proper way back to her apartment as she fiddled with the green scarf around her neck.
