"Alright, then."
Agreeing mostly to get away from the increasingly suspicious topic, Crow gave Rabid a shifty look.
"He isn't... er. I never really thought he was a jerk."
Except that time he'd nearly strangled her - though, she reasoned, she'd totally brought that down on herself.
Wincing inwardly at the reaction she'd stirred up, Lenore tried to think of something intelligent to add to the conversation.
"Humans are idiots by default, Ik-Malachi. You know how many people have called me ugly or tried to rip my feathers out? 'Sides the people smart enough to be here, humanity's a bunch of worthless jerks."
Misanthropy was beginning to becom a major interest on Len's part.

"Not so much a jerk as an overprotective pervert," Rabid shrugged and stared at her feet for a moment before turning back to Crow, "Kid had an incredibly shitty life. It's hard for him to...be normal sometimes."
"Yeah, I know," Ike nodded, "but how many have run screaming? You could pass off as Human if it weren't for the wings. Really, you could." He self-consciously picked at the bit of exposed fur on is chest.

To her horror, Crow suddenly burst out laughing. So, she and Liam had something in common after all.
"Rabid," she managed to choke, continuing to laugh so hard she couldn't breathe, "I can't even begin to tell you how well I can relate to that."
She didn't know why she was laughing - but in an insane way, it seemed like the best response.
"More than you would think," Lenore replied shortly. The human comment had offended her, a little.
"I don't want to look like them. That's why I don't hide it, and that's why they're jerks to me. We're different - humans don't do different well."
She'd never realized how bitter she was about humans until now.

Rabid simply blinked.
"Yeah, I know. I had to deal with your father...remember? I dragged the story from Julian. What I couldn't drag from his, I dragged from Liam."
Her friends usually seemed to have the crappy pasts.
Hers really wasn't that bad.
"I don't want to look Human either," Ike realized, "I just want them to...not care. A half-cat can walk around half-nude and nobody cares. A sharp-toothed squirrel walks down the street, and they all run in terror."
He shrugged, but then laughed.
"I chased some kid down for calling me a rodent. He started crying. Heh..."

Trying with little success to control her laughter, Crow shook her head a little.
"Not the part with Yagadath and Feriska - they've been taken care of, anyway. I mean th' last seven years I've been here on my own-" she paused, wiping away a tear or two and giggling slightly.
"-I was a right nasty b***h for a long time. I've done....well, s'not important now. None of it matters now."
Lenore smirked, imagining the moment with slightly vindictive pleasure. Then she sighed, shaking her head.
"There'll always be a troublemaker. They accept what tries to fit in and make them happy, but something that just wants to live and mind their own business..." she trailed off, thinking hard.
"If we don't do what they want us to, make ourselves available for their curiosity or entertainment, we're nothing but freaks they want to torture."

Rabid cocked her head slightly to one side.
"Oh? Before you knew me, then," she shook her head slowly, "It doesn't matter to me. Not unless it comes back to bite you in the a**. Then I'm here."
She thought back to her own past. Could Crow have done worse things than she had herself? Hm...
"Yeah," Ike nodded, experiencing a sudden mood swing, "but who gives a damn about them? Imma drag all of your out some day. Let them try and do anything."
He laughed to himself and threw himself backward.
"I'll blind them with my flashy light of doom!"
For a humorous demonstration, he caused a miniscule ball of light to appear in his hand and float above his palm.

Crow's pleasant mood faltered at a random, quite unwelcomed remembrance of a bullet burying itself in her head. Stopping laughing abruptly, she gave a shiver, eager to steer away from the topic.
"It's over and done with. It won't come back to haunt me - it's.... bleaugh. Never mind. What happened before we met, it's not important at all."
Immediately cheered up by the sight of a shiny object, Lenore gaped at the light ball and reached out to touch it before she could stop herself. Curling her fingers and sitting on them to remove temptation, she watched it hover in fascination.
"Oooh."
Now that she saw what it was, Lenore was more impressed by Ike's alignment then she thought she'd be. It was... pretty.
After a moment's thought, she decided it would probably be best not to mention that.

"Exactly," Rabid nodded, "and as long as you keep that mentality about me, it's all good."
She grasped desperately for another topic.
"Anything new and oh ehm gee squee-happy happen recently?"
Ike made a fist, causing the light to extinguish, and pulled himself up to a sitting position again.
"Oh, right! Reminds me," he began rifling through the numerous pockets in his pants, "Ah!"
From the pocket near his ankle, he removed a moderately-sized black pendant in the shape of either a crow or raven, he wasn't quite sure. He fingered the silver wire pressed into the...whatever gem it was...before holding it out to Len.
"I got this for you when Liam brought me shopping," he shrugged, "Thought you might like it. If not, you could always melt it or somethin'."

Immensely glad for the change of topic, Crow thought on her answer for a second.
"Nothing too major, really. Julian bought an egg - one o' those Kyn things." She gave a slightly bemused laugh, rolling her eyes.
"Damn impulse buys. The whole room is packed with reptiles anyway - Len told you about the gator from the toilet, right?" She paused again, cheering up.
"Other than that... well. Not too much. It's been quiet lately."
"Oh, Malachi,"
Taking the pendant and holding it as though afraid she would break it, Lenore looked up at him with an unreadable expression.
"It's beautiful."
Curling her fingers around it and holding it close, she kept looking at him with that same expression. The edges of the pendant bit into her skin, and she loosened her grip a little.
"Thank you," she managed. Holding her new treasure up to the light, she admired it's black form with pleasure.
"I've been meanin' to ask you - what kind of stuff d'you like?" She said, her expression turning cheerful again.

"Ooh!" Rabid clapped her hands together, "Poe must meet this new Kyn when it hatches. He needs a friend. I just hope it's small."
Damn. The conversation kept coming to abrupt near-ends.
Ike half-grinned, insanely glad that Len liked his gift.
"You're welcome."
He thought for a moment about her question.
"I dunno. Anything," he shrugged and reached into another pocket, removing the glass ball that Len had given him when he was a baby, "Shiny things, I guess. Because I'm a dork like that. Fear me and my squirrely doom."

"For the sake of my sanity, I hope it is too. He even already named it - 'Drucilla'. Very catchy name, isn't it?" Crow said, looking happy despite the slight sarcasm in her tone. She was a sucker for animals, and the zoo currently living in her room stood testament to it.
After a moment's thought, she turned and gave Rabid a serious look completely at random. The biggest part of their conversation had left a nagging idea in her mind...
"D'you think Liam'd take it amiss at all if I asked him to go see a movie with me?"
Lenore gave an amused snort, grinning.
"I think I know what you mean - can't see a shiny thing without wanting to take it and stow it in a nest or somethin'."
Glancing down at the marble she'd given him ages ago, Len felt oddly pleased he'd kept it for so long.
"The world will one day learn to fear us - with your squirrely doom and my pointy eye-gouging skills of evil, we'll teach 'em all."

Rabid stared at the ground in thought, gnawing on her lower lip.
If she asked him, he could do one of two things. He could get his hopes up and be crushed or be an a** and not accept. Both of those reactions qualified as "amiss", didn't they?
"Eh. He's Liam. He defies logic," she thought aloud before turning back to Crow, "I doubt it."
"Animal instincts," Ike snerked and stowed the marble away, "Gotta love 'em. As for the eye-gougy squirrely doom evil...I think Liam has that sketched somewhere. I saw him doodling you n' me in the margin of some page, but he put it away real quick and wouldn't let me see. I'll try to steal it."
He suddenly remembered the whole "s-relations" talk. Something had posessed his mother to tell him all about it quite recently, and Len had mentioned something about a book.
"Liam has an old one of those...books we were talking about that last time you came over? He said I could let you take it if your mom agreed at it was okay. Humans are really weird..."

"Ah, good. Don't feel like dragging Julian with me - we go everywhere together, practically. Pretty soon people are gonna start thinking we're dating."
Absently scratching long gouges into the bench, Crow looked out onto the grounds pensively.
"I think a couple people are thinking that anyway - he's clingy."
At the mention of The Talk, Lenore stuck out her tongue and scrunched up her face.
"Nah, that's okay. I saw some stuff online - they're not just weird. They're gross."
Not that she'd seen the finest information the internet had to offer - but then, Google just wasn't as efficient as many people thought.

"You and Julian?" Rabid arched an eyebrow, her voice taking on a deeply confused tone.
Ike's ears folded back ever so slowly. He'd been specifically told that the internet was the worst place to go for information on this kind of thing.
"Yeah," he snerked, "I'll stick with a cauldron and vague directions any day."

Realizing how that must have sounded, Crow snerked slightly.
"Ah, they're idiots for thinking it." She said lightly, before adding, "He's just... he worries about me. Always has - he's got the idea that he has to protect me from all the big bad things in the world. Given recent events, can't say I blame him for being a little paranoid. So - clinginess."
Nodding vehemently in agreement, Lenore scrunched up her face again. Why on earth hadn't anyone told her not to go to the internet for help?
"Rather have a shrapnel-flinging explosion than-" she cut herself off quickly, looking grossed out. "Never mind."
