Tony watched him, then shook his head.
"No, it doesn't have to be official. I can arrange something, certainly," he was always willing to try, and considering he pretty much had full run of the place, it wasn't difficult for him to arrange whatever he wanted.
He was a bit gullible in that way, and fairly easy to take advantage of, if anyone was so inclined. It was difficult for him to tell when the proper time to say no was.
Dogby barked, but only because her ball had rolled off the counter and she couldn't go and get it because of her leash. She whined sadly, pawing at the edge of the counter, looking down at it by Ever's feet, then looking up at him pleadingly.

Ever shot the dog a look and then quickly gave the ball a kick -- quiet and just hard enough to send it trotting off, so the dog would leave them alone for a little while. Then he leaned in on top of his books, still watching Tony, face tipped just so to show off the bright bruising.
"You don't mind? I wouldn't want to get you in trouble but, um. If you need help...I do know the system pretty well." Not a lie there, either. He'd spent enough time here to know where most things sat, and was a quick study anyway. He twitched a brief smile.
He might have been flirting, just a little.

Dogby yelped and followed after it, until the end of the counter, where the leash ended. She whined and barked at the ball, pulling at the leash as hard as she could. She wanted to get to it, badly, but she wouldn't be able to jump off the counter, anyway.
Tony winced, tilting his head as he looked at the bruising. He sighed softly, a familiar feeling of woe and disappointment in the state of the city settling over him.
Oblivious to any flirting, intentional or not, Tony laughed and shook his head, snapping out of his thoughts and shaking his head.
"I won't be in any trouble, don't worry about that."
He moved to get a pencil, one of the little ones kept around for students and patrons to write down numbers and titles of books. He wrote his cell phone and work numbers on it, since he was not inclined to hobble to his desk just to get one of his business cards. He also wrote down Monday, 3pm.
"You come in at three on Monday, and we'll give you the tour of the library, and run over what's what. It's all fairly simple, anyway, familiar or not. Uh, and if you can't make it then we can reschedule it." He shook his head, wanting to keep things less than strict. He got the feeling that Ever didn't much care for rigidity of schedules and behavior.

Ever licked his lips at that, shifting just a little as he took in Tony's tone, his body language, his -- well, his acquiescence. No pushing or nudging or teasing or insistance on rules and regulations. Just 'come when you can' and he'd get money. Who could say 'no' to that?
After a moment, he reached out to take the card, turning it over in his fingers. He could be sober and cleaned up by three PM on Monday...
"Sure. Yeah. Okay. Um." A quick look upward and he pulled a face, pointing to the bruises. "You want me to try to cover this up somehow?"

Tony nodded his head, glad that Ever agreed. In Tony's head, coming to the library and working a bit might do him some good. It had done wonders for Tony, after all.
And anyway, at least Ever was a reader of sorts. Better than Tony, who actually read very little, and was often teased for the fact.
He looked at the bruise when Ever asked if he wanted it covered up. He frowned.
"Uh. Whatever you're comfortable with. Don't worry about it, if you don't want to. I don't think bruises and injuries are entirely out of place around here." He picked up his cane and tipped it toward Ever to make his point.

Ever mirrored the nod, bobbing like an idiot as he reached out to grab the books and tuck them under his arm, but then paused to gather himself again. This was weird, if not entirely unexpected. He'd been more expecting a twenty than a job but...
"Hmmp." Better not to leave looking like a sorry thing. His smile grew just a little and he gestured vaguely at Tony with the card in his hand. "Do I have to dress up? I think I own a tie somewhere..."

Tony laughed.
"Well, nice clothes would be good, you know. Promotes a sense of professionalism, encourages the patrons to trust you if they need to ask for help. They tend not to have any strange odors..." He chuckled, shaking his head.
"Ties are not required, however. Just something you might wear to, ah... church, or the theatre, or something like that. Perhaps no jeans," He grinned. That was usually the comment that got his student workers or volunteers groaning. Teenagers seemed rather attached to their blue jeans, but since Ever was a bit older, he might have already grown out of that stage.
The librarian offered him a smile and a nod, glancing over at Dogby as she whined and toddled to him, nuzzling his arm with her head. He pet her, scratching her ears.

It was actually the 'church' comparison that kindled understanding in his expression. Ever made a little noise, though: he definitely didn't own any nice khakis anymore, nor any crisply white collared shirts, and if he'd gone to church like he was dressed now, his dad might have murdered him in his sleep.
Not much to be done for it now, though.
"I'll work something out." He eased away another step, his own eyes flashing down to the dog and then back up to Tony. Retreating. "No jeans anyway. I have some cargo pants or something."

Tony noticed the boy was retreating and grinned, not wanting to keep him. He nodded his head, waving his hand in a gesture of farewell.
"I'm sure you'll be able to figure it out," he said, teasing, though it just came off as a genuine statement of confidence. He looked at Dogby and realized she was still whimpering, so he went to get her ball for her to get that miserable, large eyed expression off her face.
It was impossible to ignore that face.
"See you then," he called to Ever, as he moved around the front counter to get to the lost bouncy ball. He picked it up carefully, wrinkling his nose, then helped Dogby off the counter so she could chew on the toy on the floor. It was time he got back to work, anyway.
