xxxxxxxxxxxx And xw i t h o u t x you is how I xd i s a p p e a r "Jay....Jay!" There Bob stood in the dimmed light of his completely disheveled living room over his equally disheveled son, who, for some unknown reason, was asleep on the couch, yet again. Why this boy continued to forget he owned a bed was beyond Bob. Furthermore, Bob just couldn't figure out why his son was half naked (dressed in only blue plaid boxers) and missing a sock. He looked around the room...no sock. Well where the hell was it!? Socks didn't just up and run away! "Jay, get up." He said lacking vigor, or emotion for that matter. Bob reached for the remote on the coffee table that was practically hidden by the plethora of beer cans (crumpled and un-crumpled) thrown carelessly on the wood and shut off the TV. His son was well on his way to becoming an underaged alcoholic if the sheer amount of empty beer cans were anything to go by. This past month hadn't been particularly great for Bob. Everyone was a gossip, and it didn't help that his only son was the topic of slander around town. Bob had become alienated, and ashamed and because of it, he had seldom stopped by his house long enough to greet Jay who was the start of his problems. He supposed it was 50% his fault that the house was in such disarray-Jay couldn't do much house work seeing that every time he bent down started hollering and cursing. "Jay!"
Jason twitched suddenly, his body tensing as he awaked. "Hmmm" He groaned, frowning involuntarily. The younger man rolled his neck a few times before opening his eyes. "What-ahhhhhhhhh!" Jay's body stiffened instantly, his knees squeezing closer to his stomach as his toes separated in reaction to the pain shooting through his right side. Broken ribs would do that to you.
"Jay! See this is why you shouldn't pass out on the couch. Your spine twists all up because you're too damn big for the couch and you wake up screaming your head off!" Jay, who was already in enough discomfort, really didn't want to wake up to his father giving him a 'talking to'. "You know what Bob," He started with a voice slightly caked with sleepy raspiness, "instead of yelling at me for being hurt, you could get me a frikken aspirin-tylonal." "Hell Jay, can you even take an asprin with all this beer you've been drinking?!" "Yeah-Dad-Bob! I just woke up!"
Oh yeah, Jay had just woken up...finally! "Yeah, I need to tell you I found you a different job now that you can't do much of anything physical." That was both good news and bad news mixed into one, Jay didn't know how to take it. Sure it gave him something to do, and ensured payment, but it also meant daily interactions with people and Jay...Jay wasn't really sure about that. "Where is it?" "Here, I wrote it all down." Bob placed a ripped piece of paper on the coffee table. "Okay, I'm going to work, and we don't got no asprin left." "Then how am I-" "Go out and buy some." With that Bob left the house forcing Jay to actually go out and buy pain killers. Jay grumbled and winced as he sat up and eventually got up. Getting dressed was easy, it always was. He threw on some jeans, which as usual looked worn out, and a grey tank top-which was the closest thing to being shirtless. Getting dressed, sure it was easy, finding shoes, not quite as simple. How the ******** was it possible that he had lost his shoes? Where the ******** were they!? He tore through the house getting more and more agitated with each shoeless minute. After about a solid ten minutes of searching, Jay's composed demeanor, cracked. "RAHH!" He threw swiped his arms across the coffee table causing each and every beer can to go flying into the air. "Where the ******** are they!?" He huffed visibly, his chest moving up and down. With his first deep inhale however, Jay calmed. "Ow ow ow ow ow". He sat himself down and crossed his ams over his chest, retreating into his body. He didn't understand why he was getting so angry so quickly these days. He'd never been characteristically violent before, but now-now he went off on the stupidest things. He moved his foot and felt something hard touch his ankle. Jay looked down and saw it, his shoe. How had they become lodged under the couch!? It didn't matter, they were there and he was going to wear them! Now dressed and ready with two bulky black boots (without the laces tied because Jay was lazy like that) Jay left the house in search of medication. The walk into town wasn't long, and in fact he reveled in being alone outdoors. He didn't have to interact with anyone, didn't have to think about anything it was, quiet, really nice and quiet.
Being in the middle of town, well that wasn't quite the same feeling. It was like he had eight heads. Everyone needed to stop and just stare at him. This was a small town, people talked, and talked and talked, and knew everybody's business. Jay frowned though he tried to keep his face emotionless. The drug store was about a block away, but the ice cream shop was about ten feet away. Ice cream was looking pretty good right now, for a few reasons. 1, it was hot and ice cream was cold. 2, Jay wasn't happy and ice cream tasted like happiness. And 3, Modette Petters was half a block away and she was the mouthiest b***h Jay knew. If he passed her she'd throw something verbal abuse his way and dammit Jay was not going to deal with that! So he ducked into the ice cream shop and got starred at....again. This time however, children were involved.
"That's the guy that killed Chelsea Parker." Was the first whisper he heard. "You don't think he's gonna try and kill us do you?" "No that's stupid-wait, maybe-let's go." The two little boys ran past Jay, who at this point was looking very sour.
He needed a ******** triple scoop!

She squinted at the light on her phone, how long had she been out?
Oh. It was Alex.. Normally, if it were different times... she may have flirted with him. Since she was single and all. But these weren't different times.
He wanted to hang out? Her mom did say she needed out of the house.. that actually sounded like a really good idea. She did need out of the house, fresh air and all.
Well, that had been why she was sitting outside in the first place.
When Harley sat up she got a wicked whiff of herself..ick! She definietly needed a shower first. Pick me up in 30?
With that, she was racing into the shower. Which, did not last as long as it normally did. This was purely a 'I need to smell like I haven't been soaking in my own bed sweat for a week' shower. When she got out, she smelled fresh and clean.
A little bit of makeup, and a fresh summer outfit, that her mother had brought home for her a week or so ago, and she was ready.
Twenty five minutes. Record timing for her. Maybe she was a bit more eager to leave the house than she had originally thought..

Emily wound through the residential streets until she got back out to the more business suited streets. No skyscrapers... no office buildings... just a few shops and the like.
She figured there were more official, and at least somewhat bigger STORES, further in however.
Instead of going straight on to continue her tour of the outskirts of town, Emily decided to head in and see what there was to see... Anything mildly interesting seemed like it would be this way... right? Sure, there might be a couple little easter eggs (maybe?) but she'd eventually have friends to tell her such things, so for her own exploration purposes, she'd find out more this way.
And besides, she was feeling like a snack sounded pretty good right now.
Just as she was thinking this, Emily started to pass an ice cream shop, and almost didn't notice. Almost. She skirted into a small, side parking lot and came to a rather abrupt stop.
Two little boys were making a beeline out of there as she neared the entrance.
Emily stepped through the door to the sound of a bell and spotted a couple at one table, the person behind the counter, and one person in line.... all seeming a bit awkward in the presence of a sour looking, but rather attractive guy around Emily's age. She could tell he was the source do to the frequent uneasy glances in his direction.
Emily stopped momentarily, and raised an eyebrow at the sight as she observed the odd behaviors. After checking the dude out thoroughly without a care as to who noticed, she gave a mental shrug, and stepped up next to him, with a few feet in between to survey the menu.
Alright, it was no baskin robbins, or Dairy Queen... But it seemed to have a decent selection. She would have to judge based on taste more than anything else of course though.

xxx Birds seem to have it easy. Alex thought as he sat staring out his bedroom window. Out into the summer air. He observed how the sun made patterns on the ground through tree leaves. He was half waiting for a reply from Harley, but he figured her phone would be turned off. All this staring at things had begun to make him a little sleepy. It seemed as good a time as any to take a little nap. Another thing that was too good to be true. His phone vibrated loudly right next to his ear. Sitting up he looked at the message.
Thirty minutes? That gave him enough time to shower and get ready, It didn't take him very long anyway. He shrugged and texted back, Thirty minutes it is. No problem.
He ran out of his room with clean clothes in hand and into the bathroom. The bathroom he had seemed larger then it normally did. It was probably because Chelsea's stuff was no longer overflowing onto his counter space. Before now it had annoyed him to no end. But as of a month ago he would have done anything to have it back.
With a short sigh Alex took a ten minute shower but took a good five minutes drying off and getting dressed. Getting out of the water was his least favorite part of this process. Once dressed he wondered something, did Harley want him to leave his house after thirty minutes or be at her house in thirty minutes? Oh what did it matter. He would wait if he was too early anyway. He just needed to get into the fresh air.
Walking to the front door Alex grabbed the keys to his mom's car. It wasn't the most glorious car out there but it got Alex where he needed to go and he didn't mind it all too much.
Before walking outside he called to his mom,"I have the keys. Will be back later." He didn't wait for an answer before walking out the door. He knew his mom would be okay with it. It was her idea after all.
Getting in the car he got everything situated and left his house. It only took about five minutes, if that, to get to Harley's house. The lived quite close together.
Alex parked the car quickly and walked up to her door, knocking politely.

Harley was checking her phone every few seconds now. She actually felt nervous, but why? It was Alex. She had grown up around him... Jeesh. What was her problem?
She jumped when someone knocked at the door, and suddenly saddness washed over her. Chelsea never knocked... She always walked straight in just as she was part of the family. Because, well, she was. She was like her sister.
Harley shook her head and stood up, taking a deep breath. When she opened the door, her eyes locked with Alex's. No matter what, lately, whenever she saw him, his eyes... They looked like her own. Filled with sadness, confusion. She found it almost comforting, in a sick and twisted sort of way. Knowing someone else felt was she was feeling, it helped knowing she wasn't alone.
"Hi," She mumbled, after a too long silence. "Ready to get outta here then?" She sort of felt like ice cream...Or maybe not. A lot of people in town went to their little parlor.
She hated that, that she had to avoid certain places. Especially the places that held too many memories..

xxxxxxxxxxxx And xw i t h o u t x you is how I xd i s a p p e a r Hmm, was there perhaps a morphine flavor of ice cream? Ooh, that sounded delicious. Morphine ice cream to ease his aching ribs and prosac sprinkles to cure the onslaught of depression quickly taking him over!
Jay frowned deeper. It was hard to believe those same two kids had looked up to him only a month ago. People in this town had known the name Jason Trammel and they hadn't associated it with despair or danger or any of that negative crap. He'd been a member of the town, someone everybody knew, the kid people said hi to on their way to run errands-now though, well, they didn't exactly cover up their judgmental stares.
Morphine fantasies aside, Jay realized he really did need to pick out a flavor. He figured he'd go with something simple, a classic, something he could finish up before he made it to the drug store. But what flavor?
Jay knocked himself out of his thoughts and noticed that, for some strange reason, people weren't looking at him anymore. Well why? It wasn't that Jay minded, he was happy to not be the center of attention, it was just, odd. Why would they suddenly lose interest in him? He was the town scum-that wasn't something that was easily topped.
His lips twitched as he person in front of him ordered and looked to the side simultaneously. Jay's gaze followed that of the man before him.
Suddenly Jay's eyebrows rose and he turned his head to blatantly stare. He did not know that girl. He knew everyone, literally everyone, in this town, but he most certainly did not know this girl. Who was she? Why was she here?
Jay lowered his gaze quickly, however. What if she knew about the whole Chelsea incident? She'd just look at him the way everyone else did, like he was some sort of murderer, the scum of the earth. He swallowed a lump in his throat but turned his head to try and sneakily cast an inquisitory peek at her. He was curious, Clover Ridge didn't usually have out of towners.

Emily was perfectly aware that once she'd moved up into clear view, the looks went from the dude to her left, to her. Although it wasn't wuite the same kind of stare down, clearly. The gazes on her seemed more surprised, confused, or curious.
These people clearly did not see outsiders very often.
Oh well. She wasn't here a tourist, even if she sort of felt like one currently. Trying out the local food and desert. Right.
The guy wasn't as inconspicuous as he thought either, but she pretended not to notice.
Since he seemed undecided and the other customer had finally moved on, Emily stepped passed him and up to the counter.
"I'd like the chocolate fudge on a cone please." She asked.
"I haven't seen you before... new or... passing through?" asked the girl behind the counter, curiously.
"New. I'm not sure how permanent it is, but I arrived only yesterday." Emily answered. The girl had stopped doing anything as she waited for an answer, then suddenly seemed to remember she had an order and went about filling the cone.
The girl asked what her name was as she handed the cone over and told her the price. "Emily, and thank you." She said with a nice polite smile. She paid with cash from a cute little wallet she had pulled out of her designer purse before returning it to it's place.
Now.... should she eat it here, return to her car, or walk around?
And then there WAS that rather interesting guy. Looks aside, the people here had seemed to think he was interesting... at least in some way.

Alex swung his keys around his finger. Seeing how many times he could swing them in a circle before they slipped off his finger. It was too interesting. Since when was he this easily entertained.
It wasn't long before the door opened and Harley's eyes met his. He smiled a weak but genuine smile. There was a long and quite awkward silence that seemed to hang there. Even after she spoke the sound of silence still rang in the back of his mind. "Hello."He mumbled and shoved his keys into his jeans pocket.
"I am definitely ready to go. Fresh air is good." His voice stronger this time as he took a deep breath to emphasize the fresh air part. He stepped back to let give her some room to walk out the door before looking up at the sky. It was very hot out and he needed something to eat. The apple didn't do it for him at all.
Alex pulled the keys out of his pocket and swung them around his finger once more."So where would you like to go. I am quite hungry." As he spoke he started to walk backwards to his car.
They could go to the book store in town or to the ice cream parlor. He knew how much Harley liked books and he figured she liked ice cream because her and Chelsea would sit in the living room and eat it like it was going out of style. And when they ran out of Chelsea's ice cream, they would go after his. Alex practically had to keep his food out of sight when Chelsea was hungry.
Moving his eyes away from Harley, He looked over his mom's car carefully. It was the only car they owned now. They one he and his sister shared had been totaled. Sighing he unlocked the doors and moved over to the passenger side. The polite thing to do was open the car door for a girl. That and he didn't quite want to get into the car just yet. Even if it was so much cooler in there.

Harley followed him outside and she shut the door behind her. "Fresh air is fabulous." She laughed lightly. Yes, getting outside was definietly needed more often.
Note to self.
Where would she like to go? Alright. Well, there were only a few places to chose from. If they wanted anything exciting, they'd have to drive about thirty minutes to the bridge that took them to the real world, aka the city.
"I'm pretty hungry myself, actually. Wanna go grab a bite somewhere..in town? Uhm, like.." She racked her brain. Where could they go that wouldn't remind them of Chelsea? Today, they needed to have fun.
Or something that wasn't painful.
Alex opened the door for her, well. That was nice. Jason had stopped doing that about three months into their relationship. Not that he did it that often anyways. He was more... well, he was a good guy. It was just.. he was rough around the edges. Which was what Harley always loved about him.
Loved. Jeesh. She had to stop thinking so much.
Harley slid into the car. "How about we just grab a quick bite at the first place we see that actually sounds good?" She hated making decisions. Indecisive was her middle name.

xxxxxxxxxxxx And xw i t h o u t x you is how I xd i s a p p e a r Oh that was cool, she could totally just step in front of him...then again, he had sort of been a little too into starring at this foreigner (if you weren't a local you were a foreigner in Jay's eyes) to step into his proper place in line. Whatever though, so long as he got his ice cream he was happy...well, maybe not happy per se, but content...no, not even really content. Despite his initial displeasure, the silver lining of the whole line situation was that he got to listen in on some info about this new chick. Who the hell was she?!
Oh, this was interesting, she moved here. Nobody ever moved to Clover Ridge though-well, except for, but he didn't want to think about her. Thinking led to melancholy which led to excessive drinking that then led to him being passed out on the couch without advil. So he wouldn't think about her, even if he sort of really wanted to.
Jay focused on the scene before him and tried to block out his surroundings as best he could. All he was going to focus on was this-Emily, and the transaction she was having with Kayla who was behind the counter.
Jay stepped up to the counter as soon as he could; he was interested in this Emily chick, but he really wanted to kick this popsicle stand.
"Just give me a rocky road on a sugar cone." He wasn't going to say 'Hey Kayla what's up?', or 'how have things been with Dale', who Kayla was dating and Jay was-or rather, had been, friends with; it would be too awkward, and he knew she didn't really wanted to talk to him.
"Okay Jay." As she quickly set off to work, eager to dispose of the gigantic elephant in the room, Jay stuck his hand in his pocket to grab the tree dollars and thirty cents he needed. (He knew the price of each ice item on the ice cream menu by heart)
Suddenly, just because nothing could ever go according to plan, two quarters and three dimes slipped right through his fingers and began spiraling out of control just to mock him.
Jay reached down already fully aware of what would transpire in the next three seconds. He reached slowly, his finger tips just above his knee when a shooting pain shot up his side.
"Oof!" He huffed smacking his hand against his ribs instinctually. The protective action, however, turned out to only produce a fire like sensation in his chest thanks to the pressure of the impact on his broken ribs.
He grit his teeth as a groan erupted from his throat.
There was no frickken way he could pick up those coins. The whole purpose of this excursion was to get pain medication, so dammit there would be no relief for him! That meant no ice cream either!
No one would help him, no one would want to show compassion towards him for fear of being singled out by the twenty million gossips in this town!
He had to mentally prepare if he was going to reach for his money again.
