Before I had braces I played really good for only played trombone for about two years. I got my braces back in september of eighth grade year. The first couple of weeks I could not play at all. Every time I tried to hit any kind of note my teeth would feel like they were on fire. It was pretty bad, I played first for everything but I mostly had to give parts up because I couldn't hit the high notes. But it got better with time. By sophmore year I was back up at first/second trombone. I got my braces off this summer of sophmore year but I feel that I played better with braces then without. Everyone says that when you get your braces off you should be able to hit high notes but it was the total opposite for me. I can only hit low notes consistently.

I had braces in middle school and they would sometimes cut my lip. I used dental wax and it helped a LOT!

They were completely wrong. Don't push your range. You'll completely damage your embouchure.

Also, when you get your braces off, it's good if you refrain from JUMPING right back into your practice schedule. I forget the proper routine but you're suppose to stop playing for a couple of week to let your mouth get used to not having braces and so your lips forget how to play with them, then gently ease back into playing. You'll sound like a beginner again, but that's normal. Take it slowly one day at a time. Baby steps :3

I got my braces earlier this summer and I can't play a C (on the scale) for a trumpet with good tone. I'm going into 9th grade but I could hit a C most of the time in 6th grade... sweatdrop And i started marching band so... xp But at least it gets better, as with my section members

When I got my braces on I couldn't play much on my trumpet. But in the middle of the year I switched to Horn and now I'm worried. I've moved up in band by practicing my a** off with braces, and now I'm a year away from getting them off and I'm worried I won't be able to play horn for a long long time or even at all. My BD said I was made for Horn, but I'm worried my braces will take that all away.
