Why? Aila mouthed the word, blinking in a vague sort of confusion. It was a question she had never asked herself. The answer had always been so clear that it seemed a foolish curiosity.
"I promised my mother. I won't go back on that, no matter what. Even if it means going down alongside Leon. It's all I want, and it's all I've ever wanted. Everything I do is a means to that end, and wanting anything else after that just seems... silly. Wrong, even." She tilted her head slightly. "Is it so strange?"

Nikki snorted as Aila mentioned her mother.
"I'm all for revenge, but leaving that as your only goal is foolish and a waste. Is that the only reason you joined Team Rocket, to kill this guy?"
Was it so strange to hold resentment and want to get back at the source? No. Was it odd to simply not care after it was done? Hell yes.

"No. Directly, that has little to do with why I'm here. I joined because the opportunity to do so was offered to me. It freed me of financial worries and opened the door for me to put my skills to full use." A way to further her towards the realization of her goal. That's what Team Rocket had meant to her from her first encounter with Seth in the bank. The chance to steal and infiltrate, a strong team of a variety of pokemon, contacts with an array of vastly different people - they were all benefits, but none were as much as a part of the reason for her presence.
"To pursue more than one goal seems a bit greedy, I think... Especially when a life can be ended with as little as a well-placed shard of glass."

Nikki glared quietly at the other girl as she spoke. Something about Aila's words made her bristle, but she couldn't fully explain it.
"Maybe to you. There are some of us who would like to better our lives. I don't think you quite understand what impact your actions and future actions could have. If you kill that man, it could put this team in serious danger. For me, Team Rocket is my life, and without it, I have nothing. But then I wouldn't expect someone like you, whose only goal is petty revenge, to understand that."

"Don't get me wrong," she turned a portion of her attention to the paper in front of her, beginning another attempt at the draft. A more sober tone bled into her words as she continued, "I believe this is the best place I've been in my life, at Team Rocket, and I know others can say the same. I have no desire to endanger it. Actually, I plan to take good measure against doing so." Ideally she wouldn't even be traceable as a member of the organization at the moment she killed her brother. She ignored the comment about petty revenge; Aila similarly didn't expect Nikki to understand her motives.

Brown eyes narrowed suspiciously at the shorter girl, for Nikki wasn't entirely convinced of her words. She didn't really know Aila very well, nor her background, but she didn't trust people in general.
"And how do you plan to do that?" She asked, wondering not only for the fact of protecting Team Rocket, but also due to her own curiosity. Aila and Nikki came from very different backgrounds, but both were in Team Rocket and were not all that dissimilar when it came down to it, even if their motives were.

"I'll go by myself, for one," she said as she wrote, "with transport that I purchase myself, and with only the Venusaur that I caught outside of Team Rocket. I'll confess to the assassination attempt, and that alongside the mention of my family name should both encourage them to imprison me for questioning and clear me of any suspected affiliation with Team Rocket. My goal is purely vendetta, and they'll understand that as soon as they hear my name."

Nikki wasn't at all impressed with this supposed plan. "So you intend to turn yourself in to the authorities? Just so that the killing isn't linked to Team Rocket?" She had to wonder if Aila realized how stupid that actually sounded. Plus there was the fact that there wouldn't be any guarantees. Despite common belief, the cops were not stupid, and she wasn't so sure they could be fooled so easily.
