He was still fishing out torn gloves when Zac started down the stairs; the movement [and the statement, for that matter] made a snarky reply die on his tongue, one of his eyebrows twitching upward. His cheeks were already going pink, the tips of his ears rosy.
"...where?" Zac was almost to the bottom by the time Ever heaved the bag up over one bony shoulder with an effort and started after him.

"You're deaf too?" He called back without slowing his pace, not that it was even remotely impressive given he was a whole foot shorter than 'The Impediment'.

He was short, and Ever had long legs: all it took was stretching out his pace for Ever to catch up with him, easing in next to him with hands shoved deep into the pockets of his coat and his head cocked to the side.
"If I were, you'd feel like a s**t right now, wouldn't you?" It was teasing, though; he halfway twisted, walking almost backwards so he could really consider Zac, try to figure out just how young he really was. " 'Warm and free' isn't really specific. I mean, arguably a dumpster's got both of those things going for it, but I'm not all that interested..."

"I might... or I might take the opportunity to lead you into traffic to cull the mindless herd." He shot back with a sharp glance up at the now deemed 'too tall' impediment. ".... I hope you trip." He added bluntly watching the nearly backwards stride and 'examination' that was in progress. He did not, as such, offer any explanation as to where they were going yet though. In fact he seemed to be rather pointedly ignoring it.

Ever laughed at him, openly, unashamed and inconsiderate, but took the point -- twisting around so he could look where he was going. He also ducked his head to swing the strap of his bag more comfortably across his shoulders. It seemed like they were going to be walking for a bit.
"What's your name?" His tone was still cheerfully amused as he settled everything into place and fell into a comfortable stride next to Zac, steps almost lazy. If he'd decided to really stretch out his legs, the younger man probably would have had to trot to keep up.

That earned him a calculated and suspicious stare. "Zac" he answered curtly after a moment, no last name, not even a stutter towards one that might have hinted at where to find him or who he might call family. "And you?" He tilted his head, the question was as much polite as it was formulaic. He wasn't sure if he was pleased or irritated to have amused 'the impediment', he did need a name though or he would just wind up referring to him as "the impediment" aloud, that normally resulted in being stuffed someplace small and enclosed just to see if he fit.

It was like glaring at a brick wall. Or a puppy. Except instead of cheerful ignorance it was easy indifference, Ever still smiling easily back at him with one bony hand curled around the strap of his bag. He hummed, a thoughtful sort of hum, and considered his answer carefully. He could have lied, but there wasn't much point -- other than lying for its own sake, and...
"Ever." It was an echo of Zac's curt tone, his own voice holding an edge of mocking behind it. "Do you even know where we're going?"

"Yes... london, east end to meet a man called Jack." He quipped and made an abrupt turn by hanging back a step or two and then turning a corner only to grab the handle of the second glass door down. "Well?" He said holding the door open and waiting, delicious smells wafted from within, cinnamon and sugar and good black coffee and other spices.

He drew up short, head tilted, didn't quite keep walking past Zac and down the street. After a moment, he blinked and tipped his head to peer through the door at the coffee shop.
"This isn't free." It was a careful statement, though: his tone of voice and the way his eyes twitched down onto Zac said, without actually voicing the question, unless you're paying?

"Nothing ever is, someone always has to pay..." He said as though that answered the unspoken question. Perhaps it did, because he waved impatiently inside. "Understand, that next time I need a book I can't reach, and your there I expect YOU to get it for me." He flashed a thin lipped oddly predatory smile but it was rather a small favor to ask for. "Acceptable?" He added as though to be sure of the terms of the 'agreement' to feed you.

That got a definite laugh; Ever wriggled his hand free and held it out, that one finger still poking out of his glove just a little. But the gesture was shameless, unconcerned. Zac already knew he was worse than three kinds of broke and willing to beg just a little anyway. "And let's not talk about the chances of me actually being there..."

"If your not I may have to find you and use you as a step ladder." He shot back looking pleased as punch at the flipped finger, though he did give it a studious glance rather the one estimates the price of a good, only there was a definite chance he was valuing YOU rather than your glove. "Besides, I've demanded worse than asking for a book to be fetched, and the Librarian is known for being forgiving. How many other places can you go and read for free hmm? Chances are IF you are there again and IF you get the book this MIGHT be a repeat offer." He shrugged and marched towards the line without a doubt that you would follow it seemed, at least till he claimed a spot, then he turned to look.

Ever was still laughing, a real laugh this time, but -- he followed. Kid had spunk. He hadn't had to deal with fiesty teenagers in a while and it left him strangely cheerful, himself, shaking his head and smoothing both hands over his hair as he sidled up to Zac.
"Do you actually drink coffe?" He bit his tongue. Briefly. Very briefly. "It would explain the stunted growth..."

Sharp blue eyes narrowed to thin almost homicidal slits, and with barely a moments pause he shot back. "That said, you must eat -s**t-... you seem rather well FERTILIZED" he added a smile that was as forced as it was wide before it vanished in a hot huff and he turned back to face the front of the line. "What are you eating Impediment.... Ever?"

Laughing again; Ever couldn't help it. It was like watching a kitten build to a bubbling frenzy, nevermind that it was declawed. He had no way of knowing there actually was bite behind that bark. And he probably wouldn't find out until about ten seconds after it came around to hit him.
"I don't know. Uh." He shot a look to the menu, dark eyes scanning over lattes and iced drinks and italian sodas and everything else the teenagers drank. "Black tea. And anything, to eat..."
