'Bedford? That's unusual, does it mean anything?' Neena asked, and at his question gave him a distinctly female look, as if she felt he was questioning her capabilities.
'I like flying, I like being high, so high that it becomes a challenge to breathe and the air stings your lungs.' she replied, opening her wings and flapping them for a moment, rearing as she did so and kicking up her front legs.
'You can do the same you know.' she continued to say, dropping back down and closing her wings, looking at him through the strands of her mane that had covered her face when she had moved.
'Climb a high mountain, one that seems to touch the sky..It's like flying when you're amongst the clouds.'

"Not anything I know of really. It's just a name, my parents weren't around to tell me if it meant something to them." He paused for a moment, reflecting on himself. "Maybe that's why, it's so important for me to protect them. My herd, no one was there for me."
Shaking it off, "Sorry...I don't mean to be such a---Well, anyways." He watched her rear, and the silky strands of hair fall over her eyes. It was like looking through a veil at her, and he was intrigued.
"I'll have to do that. It's as close as I'll get to sprouting wings." He looked into the distance at a mountain, for a moment he wanted to just go to it. To just...leave. It was night, no one would need him till morning, "I'm going." He said it determinedly, before he could change his mind. "Come with me?" He offered. "Come with me while I feel how it feels to fly?"

'That's good, I mean it's nice that you are there for them should they need you but I don't think anyone would want that to be at a cost to you living your life the way you want? Do you really think your herd would want you to be down?' Neena asked, looking at him properly now that she'd flicked her mane from her face. She searched his green eyes and gave a warm smile.
'I don't think they would..you have to live a little.' she giggled and bumped him with her nose, and nodded as he spoke again, pleased that her words had had an impact on the stallion.
'Of course!' she exclaimed. She would be happy to accompany him, and moreover felt obliged to as she had been the one to put the idea in his mind.
'It may take a little while to get there though, and the climb will take some time.' she added, looking thoughtfully up at the distant night clad mountain.
'We should travel to the base tonight, and climb in the morning. It'll be safer to do so in the day.'
Neena said all that unaware of the fact that he was still thinking of his herd. But it really would be safer to actually climb the mountain in the daylight hours.

For a moment, indecision plagued Bedford. He wasn't sure what to do. It was true that possibly, his herd didn't need him as much as he needed them. Maybe that was true, but it wasn't something he was ready to admit. The last time he had...Well, he didn't need to think of anything.
"I suppose they wouldn't miss me for a day or two..." He smiled as she bumped her nose to him. He wasn't use to that, no one was like that with him. "Okay, we can do that. How long do you think it will take to climb it?" He looked at her smiling and nudging her back. "I'm ready when you are."

Neena noticed how much he thought, his brow seeming to furrow as he did so. And how much difference a smile made him look, lighting his face and making seem as young as he probably was.
'I'm sure they will be fine.' she said with a little nod.
'How long? Oh most of the morning I would say, so lets get going now so we can find a place to spend the night.'
She opened her wings, beating all four of them hard, stretching them before turning around and taking a short canter away from Bedford. She launched herself, taking to the wing with powerful wings strokes and fly above his head, spiralling in the air before landing with some grace by his side again.
'Okay, I'm good to walk now, needed a wing stretch.' she said with a smile of mischief. She wondered what his thoughts were as she clipped off in the direction of where the ground started its slow climb towards what was the base of the mountain before them, and she looked over her her shoulder at him.

He smiled for a moment as she lifted into the air. The beautiful and graceful flight, made his heart leap. It was exhilarating to watch, he couldn't imagine how it felt. But for a moment, he was worried that she would flutter out and away, that her wings would take her somewhere he couldn't follow.
But, she floated back down to him, content to take this journey and he felt the apprehension of being left behind leave him. He felt a kinship with her, two wandering souls united. But she was free of worries, free to roam wherever he wanted.
For a moment, he thought about leaving. But he had been left as a child, he didn't know if he could leave...But for once, he was thinking about himself. What it would be like to adventure...to go...to see mountains everyday.
He couldn't decide that, not now, he couldn't think about it. For now, he would enjoy himself, enjoy her company.
Bedford turned his attention back to her, "You're beautiful in flight. It looks so...exhillarating." He found himself blushing a bit. "When did you know that you liked to journey? Do you always go alone?"

Neena flicked her wings open and closed as they walked, occasionally giving them a little flick, enough for her hooves to dance off the ground. For a moment she lost herself in doing that..and then remembered she had company and grounded herself again with a little giggle.
'Sorry..I forget where I was for a moment.' she flicked her head, settling her mane and looked at Bedford.
'Thanks, it is, it really is. And if I knew of a way that you could fly I would be happy to do it, but that's beyond me.' she smiled as she added.
'But the earth is as pretty as the sky, and when I have my head in the clouds I'm sure I miss the little things in life. And the big things! If I hadn't chosen to land then I would have missed your good self.'
Neena thought about his question for a while as they walked before answering, glancing at the sky for a moment.
'I don't know really, when I was old enough, and my wings were big enough to support me and to sustain flight, I guess that's when I started to travel around. I probably have a lot of my mother in me, she is Freedom..well, her domain is.' she looked from the sky back to the stallion.
'I travel alone yes, I haven't met anyone so far that's wanted to join me, but that's okay. When I want conversation I just come to earth.'

"I'm glad, you didn't miss me." He smiled at her, a bit distracted. How he wished he could fly to, but he couldn't and it was okay. "I'll be content if I can just watch you fly."
"Your mother, she's must be very powerful to have a domain." He felt a little awed by it. "That explains your love of travel."
He was silent for a few moments. He was tired, very tired. Maybe he should try this. Try to travel...take a leave of the herd. Find himself, find what he needed to do.
He took a deep breath, "Would you...would you let me travel with you for awhile?" He looked at her for a long moment, "I...after talking about these adventures, I can't go back. I need to do something for myself. So, can I travel with you for awhile, or will I bind you to earth too much?"
He was terrified to leave the familiarity of home, but he didn't want to be stuck there forever. It would be like living someone else's life instead of his. And for now, he just wanted to not think and just do. He didn't know if that was right, if that was selfish...if that made him like his parents. But a few weeks, then he could go back...or he could stay gone. He didn't want to be like them, but he didn't want to give up the things he had hoped for.
The war raged on in his mind.

'I can guarantee you'll see me fly at least once during the journey, to scout ahead if nothing else.' Neena replied, looking at Bedford, wondering why he put so much into wanting to fly. She imagined it had much to do with the fact that he felt that he had to be around for his herd. Breaking free meant completely, even from that which held him to the earth.
'I guess? I mean from what I know of her, I don't see her that much because of that, she is the ultimate free spirit.' she chuckled.
'Sometimes I wonder how she managed to be tied down long enough to get pregnant and have me and my sister.'
Neena was slightly surprised at his question, and because of that she took a little while to reply.
'..Of course.' she said, one brow raised in a graceful arch.
'If it's what you want of course. I can't guarantee I know where I'll go next, nor how long I'll be away from this area.'
She was easy in that respect, and it might be fun, though she'd have to spend more time on the ground than she was used to. What she didn't want though was him to fret whilst he was away from the herd; it would colour the experience for both of them if his head was always back at home.
'But, if you can allow yourself to broaden your horizons then sure, you can come with me when I leave the area.'

"It must be nice, even seeing them once in awhile...My family left." He cleared his throat. "It took me a long time to realize, that they weren't leaving me. I stayed for all the reasons I shouldn't." He was talking too much, but it was true. He had not wanted to be them, he had done everything to be their opposite.
"I can't be so afraid to be them," he looked at her as they walked. "I can't stay there just because I'm afraid to leave. For once, I need to do what I want to do, not afraid to be them. Because if I keep staying when I don't have to, I'll wind up leaving when I don't want to."
He turned back away from her, "So for now I'm going to go with you."

'How awful!'
Bedford's words stopped her in her tracks, and for a moment her ever present inner joy dimmed as she felt sympathy for him. No wonder, no wonder he was so very hard on himself, he felt that there was a pattern and he didn't want to follow it.
'You're not them, you're not them at all. You've tried so hard to not be your family that you've closed yourself to anything that could enrich your life.' she said softly, rustling her wings a little as she spoke.
'You care, and you're good for looking out for your herd, you really are. But it's time, it's high time to look after yourself.'
Neena stood before him, and nudged at the side of his head with her own.
'Look at me Bedford. You'll have fun with with me, I promise you.' she smiled and swept her upper two wings around, laying them either side of his neck, embracing him in a warm hug for a moment, before releasing him and giggling softly.
'Even if I have to make you.'

Bedford blushed a bit at her exclamations. He leaned into her hug, reveling in a moment of companionship. Something he hadn't experienced for quite a long time.
Laughing at her quip, he smiled. "I doubt you'll have to force me. I'm already having fun."
He nudged her shoulder gently as they walked on. It was nice to have that off his chest, but he felt a little flustered now. It was a long time since he shared that, since he voiced how he was feeling and it was a little flustering. He wasn't sure what she was thinking about his confession.
For a few long moments, he gazed at the mountain looming in the distance. "So...what's it like to have siblings? Do they like to journey like you?"

'Good, good.' Neena said as she turned and started walking again. She looked at him over her shoulder.
'You should be having fun, if I not - well I have my ways.' she tried to sound all mysterious and then laughed.
'I don't know what they are yet but I assure you I have my ways!' she giggled to herself, and then went on her way again in a quieter fashion, taking in the scenery as they walked in an easy silence for a time.
'Hmm?' she turned a little as Bedford spoke again.
'Well I just have the one, a sister, and I haven't really seen her since I left home but I will again. One day I'll just head out and find her.'

Bedford laughed at her comments, content with this companionship. When she spoke about her sister, he mused. "Does she stay in one place? Or would it be hard to find her when you look?"

Neena smiled.
'She's a grounded like yourself, there won't be anywhere she can hide herself that I wouldn't find. Where ever she is, and when I want to find her I will seek her out.'
She fell quiet again, listening to the sounds of her hooves on the ground before asking in a quiet, slightly tentative voice.
'May I ask, did you ever look for your family?'
