Newski
There are two aspects to the political me:

The Realist- I try to do what I can now. That means green party, activism, very liberal.

The Idealist- Marxist Anarchist. I work so that in the future there could be a communist anarchist society.

Communist Anarchist... wow. The two most failure-prone forms of government, combined. I believe we once had a political system like that... around 10000 years ago. Be sure to keep in the green party, Newski. That way, you're depriving the Democratic Party of your vote. I am myself a Conservative Republican, who grew up in Iowa. I was constantly told that I was wrong as I was growing up, but I insisted that I was Right. Pun is intended.

Who was it that had a political system like that?
To my understanding, we have no written records that reach as far back as 10,000 years.

I personally am more interested in the party than the candidate; a candidate is simply a figurehead. They're not going to do anything in four years. A person's morals, ideals, etc, have minimal bearing on their effectiveness as president. The only desirable trait that I can think of in a presidential candidate is charisma. Other than that, it doesn't matter. A candidate upholds the ideals of their party. They have no power of their own.

In more localized government with less diffusion of power, I would definitely care more for the individual. But when you consider that the only powers that the president of the US holds are the power of veto, and the ability to hire other members of their party, individual characteristics diminish in importance.

Gah! A Hegelian!

"If some men are entitled by right to the products of the work of others, it means that those others are deprived of rights and condemned to slave labour. Any alleged "right" of one man, which necessitates the violation of the rights of another, is not and cannot be a right. No man can have a right to impose an unchosen obligation, an unrewarded duty or an involuntary servitude on another man. There can be no such thing as 'the right to enslave.'" - Ayn Rand

I stay away from politics, since I regret it every time I don't. Whenever I try to dicuss it I end up saying something incredibly stupid.

John Blackthorne
Well, I'm too young to join a political party. However, both my parents are Independent. They tend to change their votes depending on the candidates. In the most recent election, my father voted for President Bush, and my mother voted for Senator Kerry. I voted for my neighbor, since my vote doesn't count anyways.

During this past election I was too young to vote - that made me furious. What really gets me is how there are a whole bunch of people old enough to vote who don't exercise their right to. In January I turned 18 and when I went in to get my new liscense ( in Iowa you get one at 16 that only allows you to drive until 12:30, at 17 you get one that allows you to drive anytime, and then at 18 you get one that is a different color so it makes it easier for people to ID your age) they asked me if I was going to register to vote then and I said absolutely. I am a Democrat with some Libertarian views.

A lot of you people are talking about political parties, which isn't necessarily your political background. But I'll run with it.

I vote conservative.

My political background is one of low-level government, minimal central power and high liberalism coupled with high quality and heavily critical education.

Whilst I'm not able to vote yet, (3 more years....), I consider myself libertarian/green.

My parents in the last Canadian election, alongside my sister voted New Democratic Party, because theonservayive and Liberals in Canada are evil. The Green almost won a riding here, but were knocked off by an NDP. xp

I don't believe in democracy. Or any form of government that allows the people to participate in any way.

I also don't believe in the government interfering with people's rights other than protecting them, such as laws against murder and rape.

Basically, my ideal government system would be a meritocracy that isn't allowed to interfere with the economy or with personal freedoms. And an economy and populace that isn't allowed to interfere with the government. The purpose of a government is to protect the people it represents, and that's about it.

Me? Radical? Maybe.
