Truth be told, it wasn’t as scary as she had initially made it out to be. Oh, it wasn’t like it was super easy, either, but… but she could definitely do this, if only for a short distance. Very carefully, and a great deal slower than her original pace, she began placing one paw over the other - the tree was very angled, so it wasn’t as though she actually had to ‘climb’ like her aforementioned squirrel-self had expected. She lowered herself onto her belly and almost crawled forward, still not very far off the ground, but still very hesitant. “It’s not so bad,” she commented, though seeing the ground steadily grow farther and farther away was a little bit concerning. “I won’t go high, or anything. I think maybe just to… oh!”

Underneath her a small sliver of dead bark gave way, and one back paw slid over the side; she didn’t want to panic, and knew panicking wouldn’t help her in the least, but Isobel’s little heart still thrummed away as though it wanted to break free. “I’m alright!” She manoeuvered her paw back underneath herself. “This is actually… it’s kinda cool, Chimera!”

And so it was - when she finally took her eyes off her paws and managed to hook her front legs into a nook between trunk and branch. She was probably a few inches above an adult’s eye level, and what she saw was breathtaking to one used to being so small - it was as though the landscape had stretched out, and she could see further than ever! She hugged her branch, using the leverage as a time to scope out any ‘dangers,’ then looked down at her brother, smiling so widely the orange patches over her eyes scrunched.

A whine caught in Chimera's throat. He was, inarguably, a worry-wort, and he paced back and forth underneath her with growing uneasiness. Oh, what if the whole tree fell down? What if the whole thing just uprooted and fell at this very moment right on top of both of them? What if he got in terrible trouble for this whole thing? Oh no oh no oh.....

"....is it?" he asked her, timidly, his curiosity for a moment taking over his sudden concern. "....what's it like, way up there?"

Isobel felt a bit badly to see Chimera worrying so much, and for a moment she thought of inching her way back down to assure him she was perfectly fine; the tree was stable enough, and it didn’t rock when she moved, so it probably wasn’t going to fall anytime soon. Nearly hugging the branch and leaning out just a bit, Isobel looked out once more to find a good summarization that would, hopefully, ease Chimera’s mind. “Well, I can see… all sorts of things!” she crowed. “I can see down by the den, but I can’t really see into it… and I think I can see as far as where the Sisters train! It’s like I can see everything… if only there was more light!”

It was exciting! And all the more relaxing, to know that if someone came by to bust her and her brother, she could at least have an early warning. There were other branches to test when she was older, but for now - she was more than pleased with this little nook. But now, having seen plenty, she faced another predicament. “Ah… I might be stuck up here.”

But she remembered Chimera’s suggestions… now seemed like a good-enough time to try them out, and very carefully digging her back claws into the bark, she began to slide. How funny it would be to see the expressions of other wolves, when they came by this tree later to find it scored with so many scratches! Still being extra careful, Isobel did her best to avoid getting any splinters into her tender pawpads - and messed up, a few times, but had no qualms about pulling the splinters out herself, making as little fuss as possible.

Now he went from nervous to a little jealous. He couldn't see much of anything just now aside from a tree and her underbelly. "I bet you could see even more if you climbed higher!" he said, and then, just as he was about to encourage her to come up higher....she said she was stuck.

Well, that was a problem.

But at least she seemed to know what to do, he thought, watching her come down so effortlessly. If it were him, he'd be falling all over his own paws! He'd be a giant splinter! He'd be impaled on -- "Hey wow, you got down." He blinked. Jeez, how did she do that. "Get any splinters?"

“Ah, I don’t think I’ve so many splinters,” Isobel replied, settling her hindquarters on soft grass and chewing between her toes. “Not anything to worry about. Whew!”

She would have continued climbing, if she thought Chimera thought she could. She probably would have scaled the very tallest limb for him if he had asked, and had no doubts that she could if he said she could. Would, could, should. Should she be doting so much on her little brother?

Well. Yes, of course.

“I bet, shomedey,” Isobel lisped, tugging out a little splinter and spitting it to the side, “Phh-ph. I bet you’ll be able to climb, too! And then you’ll be able to see for miles, all the things I saw. You're a lot stronger than you think, Chimera - I think you could be really strong, someday, if you put your mind to it.”

No matter how uncertain and hesitant he might have seemed, Isobel figured any sibling of hers could succeed if they put their mind to it - and Chimera was just the kind to become something great. Isobel might not have known whether she should have been feeding that idea or not, but she couldn’t help it; she wanted to know just how far Chimera could get into becoming his own wolf before strange rules and customs bore down on him when he became too old to be a pup.

That was a day she hardly cared to reach.

His tail wagged and he crept forward to sniff her over for himself, making sure that she wasn't concealing any deadly wounds anywhere. "You really think so?" He asked, his tone a mix of hopefulness and excitement. If Isobel said it, it must be true!

He glanced over his shoulder, once he was satisfied that she was safe and sound. "We should probably be heading back," he said, reluctantly. "Before they realize we're gone and start freaking out."

“Of course I think so! I wouldn’t tell you otherwise if I didn’t.”

Isobel shone with sisterly pride, and didn’t giggle but the one time as Chimera checked her over for injuries. She loved to hear the anticipation in his voice, and relished in it, hoping that maybe she could play a small part in helping him become as awesome as he could be. She liked spending one-on-one time with her brother, without the prying eyes and ears of the rest of her family (oh, but she did love them with a passion!), but eventually, the fun would have to end.

“You’re right,” she said, a bit reluctantly. “What would they think if they found the two of us out on our own? I wouldn’t want anyone to worry. And… I’m a bit tired. Let’s go home, Chimera~”

He grinned, butting his head into her shoulder fondly. "Maybe we'll do this again, some night," he said, hopefully.

Then, because he was half-afraid she might say no, he barked out, "Race you!" and scampered back home, only occasionally stumbling over his big feet.
