"That is my point exactly," Chase entered the conversation vein once more, irritation lining his tone. "You could have everything going for you and then suddenly, your luck runs out and you lose anything. No one wants that." His reply was rather short and curt re-ending the conversation. He gathered up the cards, shuffled them a few times before his cold, somewhat numb fingers reached for the box and shoved the cards inside.

He didn't waste time in closing the box and shoving it in his left jacket pocket. He pulled his gloves out and slipped them over his fingers grateful for the shelter they now provided. They had been out here for a while and the cold hadn't lessened. "Yeah," he said pushing his chair back and stood, palms against the table, before he readjusted his scarf.

"Lets go grab some coffee, gotta warm up my fingers," he stated firmly offering a hand to help her up. "My treat."

Figuring she was losing the discussion, Hayden remained silent. That’s what makes luck so exciting, she thought to herself, lips pursed to keep her mouth shut. However, she had to admit that his point was valid. People didn’t like to risk their prized possessions for a shot at something more. Not even Hayden herself gambled at every chance offered to her. There are limits to taking chances, but taking chances are always thrilling—in her opinion, at least. She couldn't stop smiling at her weak argument.

“Coffee sounds good,” Hayden dreamily sighed, envisioning a hot, steaming cup of caffeine, “and your treat? Even better.” She grinned, gladly taking the outstretched hand and pulling herself back onto her feet. “I think there’s a coffee shop nearby. Do you want to go there?” It probably wasn’t the greatest coffee place, but so long as she could get her freezing hands on a warm drink she didn’t mind.

Risk wasn't a real concern for Chase, he was the kind of person to dive headfirst into something, or plan some big scheme without thinking about the possible consequences but he hated relying on luck. He was reckless, could be careless and was most certainly a daredevil but he hated luck. Of course he would be the first to admit that luck certainly had it's redeeming qualities, he wouldn't gotten away with half the s**t he pulled if he didn't have any.

But that didn't mean he wanted to talk about it.

"Anywhere," he replied quickly cupping his hands together and blowing on his fingers. What the ******** was it so cold? "Don't really care, as long as it's not outside," he stated, he didn't want to be outside any longer than he had to.

Despite her gloves, the thin heat could not penetrate the layer of deep cold in her hands. Trying not to reveal her discomfort, she softly frowned and slid her hands into her coat pockets. Hayden silently cursed when she discovered that her pockets were just as cold. She began to regret playing cards outside, but nothing could be done about that now. The past was the past and at the moment her only goal was to find someplace warm.

“I wholeheartedly concur.” I can barely move my fingers. Rather than go through the pain of pulling out her arms to point the way, she half-nodded instead. “It’s over there.” Without a word Hayden walked over, her legs moving in long, quick strides. She didn’t bother to look back at Chase, there was little doubt that he would follow.

Cold. Cold. Cold.

Not bothering to search for oncoming cars, she brashly crossed the street and into the safety of the coffee shop. As she pushed open the door Hayden was greet with a warm gush of air. She smiled, relieved.

His fingers were still ice cold, a result from being out too long. It was odd, even in the coldest winters in Destiny City, Chase had never been particularly cold but this winter was different. It was unnatural. Normally he was a walking space heater, a comfort for most of his friends but today, the last month or so had been the exception. He could never wear enough clothing to be warm any longer.

He followed Hayden briskly, amber eyes darting back and forth to make sure a car did not come out of nowhere. He was prepared to rescue his careless friend if needed but it appeared that they were both successful at avoiding traffic as they pushed open the doors and hurried inside to a welcomed warm building.

"What do you want?" He asked his companion as he took his place in line, pulling his gloves off one finger at a time before fishing for his wallet.

Had a car unexpectedly headed straight for Hayden, she was confident that an accident would have been avoided—either through the driver’s diligence or her quick reflexes or even both. She was confident, but not completely sure. In the end, though, the fact remained that the girl managed to carelessly sprint across the road and not die.

She spun around on her heels to keep her gaze on Chase as she knowingly walked into the short queue of customers. “Latte macchiato. Large.” Rubbing her hands together and gently blowing out warm air, Hayden had a hunch that she would down this drink with little problem. Once again sliding her hands into her pockets, she began to walk away. “I’ll grab a table for us,” she explained, her attention darting to a petite table perched in front of the shop window. She smiled and slid into one of the empty chairs. Grinning, she leaned forward to rest her chin on her hand as she idly watched Chase.

Chase seemed unbothered as Hayden quickly ordered then declared that she'd find them a table. He simply nodded then turned his attention to the girl behind the counter. He flashed her a charming smile as he ordered his drink, "add a large coffee to that order please." The girl giggled as she rang him up and he handed her the bills. When she went to hand him the change he held his hand up, smiled again and shook his head, "Keep it."

He stepped away as the girl seemed to blush, collecting their drinks as they were called and made his way over towards Hayden, setting the drinks down on the table carefully. Then he slid into the chair across from her and grinned as he turned the cup and saw a name and number scribbled on the side of it. "Amazing what a charming smile can do, don't you think?" He laughed taking a sip as his other hand fished out the deck of cards.

"Did you want to play anymore?"

Seeing the delighted light in the cashier’s eyes, Hayden knowingly grinned as she continued to watch. She was no stranger to the ways of flirting and geniality. It was even more exhilarating to flirt as someone not herself—an art student, a goody-two-shoes, the list of roles was endless.

Chase slid into the seat on the other side of the table. Smiling, she reached over to grab her own order. She calmly took a sip of her latte as he revealed the numbers scribbled across his cup. Pleased and gleaming, her eyes narrowed. “A good smile definitely goes a long way,” she agreed. Her gaze wandered around the store before she caught a lad at a nearby table staring at her. Amused, she briefly waved at him before returning her attention to the deck of cards in Chase’s hands.

“One last round wouldn’t hurt. Would you like to continue with the last game or try another one?”

Flirting came easy to the pair of troublemakers, it was what made them charming, charismatic even. Of course flirting every now and then helped when it came to getting out of trouble, feigning regret and complementing was always a good strategy.

He shuffled the cards a couple more times before dealing the deck cleanly in two. "Mix it up with a little bit of Egyptian?" He suggested playing with the cards in his hand idly, eyes still locked on hers. "Mix a bit of speed and a bit of luck," he mused letting the cards settle into one neat pile in his hands, face down, fingers tapping the top of the pile while he waited for her agree.

It was nice to have someone so willing to play cards, or even embark in his dangerous adventures with him because the pansies at his school who called themselves his friends often fled at the first sign of trouble.

How boring.

Hayden smiled. “Mixing is good. Sure, why not?” She reached forward to grab the top card of the deck nearest of her—it was hers, right?—and flipped it over, placing the card between her and Chase. The game started in a flash, both of them laying down one card after the other at a frantic pace before they stumbled upon a face card.

It was unsurprising that Hayden would be willing to accompany him on his dangerous escapades. She was a St. Magdalena girl. She got into trouble on a weekly basis, if not more, whether it be from causing a ruckus in class or sneaking off campus during the night. Sometimes, she couldn’t stop herself from wondering why Chase attended a school like Azure Valley. He knew how to hide his habits, but Hayden wondered when that would end.

She kept slapping cards down onto the pile, even when her phone rang. Her eyes were glued to the game as her free hand slipped into her back pocket and took out the phone. “Yeah? What? Now?” Her lips twisted into a grimace. “Okay, fine. I’ll be there.” Sighing, Hayden stood up, grabbing her drink. “Sorry, Chase. Mom wants me home for a bit.” She threw him an apologetic smile as she waved him goodbye and rushed out of the café.
