"Don't feel that way! It's not like you're still in school because of bad grades or anything." Or was she? No, Yvette was a hard worker. If there was something she didn't understand, she'd ask for help. Or would she? She was awfully meek. It pained Lydia to realize that she didn't know her cousin as well as she had thought. She might have said something else she shouldn't have, and wouldn't that just crush them both?
She hit the bed once more, making her phone jump slightly. "Noise? Oh... bad connection?" Lydia suggested. "But I can hear you just fine."
At least everything was okay now. She was sure it would be, or somebody would have mentioned it to her- right?- but it was comforting to hear it from the source. "I'm so glad Theios Alan is okay. That's what's important, right?" Yvette sounded a bit hesitant with her answer, which worried Lydia, but how could anything still be wrong? If he was working again and mostly healed, surely everything had to be better.
"Old age?" Lydia giggled. "If you're old, does that make me middle-aged? You're only four-and-a-half years older than I am!"

"Hmmm... I don't hear it anymore... that was weird..." Her cheeks had turned pink for a moment, but in regards to which of her cousin's comments, she didn't even know. Her own gerbil-like laugh replied to Lyddie's giggles.
"I am too old! Old old old! Super old! Four-and-a-half years is a lot!"
At the doorway, a woman in a white uniform walked in with a rolling cart. The way the girl had been giggling made her wonder if there had been any illegal visitors. She looked back and forth warily, as if trying to find any boys that might have snuck in. Finding nothing, she said in a nearly scolding tone "You know this is a hospital, right? You shouldn't be using your cell phone here!"
"Oh, sorry!" she squeaked out to the nurse, and then once more into the phone a simple "Oh, sorry!" With the way the nurse was looking at her, it reminded her of those teachers in high school who took away phones FOREVER. Considering she couldn't afford to lose her phone in such a manner, she needed to end this quickly.
"Sorry Lyddie... I need to get off of the phone now... I'll talk to you later... right?"

Lydia picked up her phone for a moment and looked it over. She'd heard that some iPhones had reception problems if you held them the wrong way. But she hadn't been holding it at all at the time. And if it was a problem on her end, shouldn't she have had trouble hearing too? After a moment, Lydia shrugged and put the phone back on a pillow, reaching to the side and selecting a wide-toothed comb from her nightstand.
"You are not old, Yvette! You're not even twenty yet, and that's supposed to be when people are in their prime! So if you're not even at the prime of your life yet, you can't possibly be old." She was giggling as she spoke, and didn't hear the voice in the background. But she did hear Yvette's apology.
"Oh... okay. You should probably be resting anyway, right? I'm sorry for disturbing you." And sorry for so much more. But if she went into it, it would just make them both feel bad AND keep Yvette on the phone longer. "I'm glad we got to talk though. It was... nice." Nice was another understatement, but understatements had their uses. "We'll definitely talk again soon. I promise." Lydia made sure she uncrossed her legs when saying that, just so that she couldn't back out of it later.
Her finger hovered over the "end call" button, but there was one more thing to be said before she hung up. "I love you, Yvette."
