I think that you should encourage the use of mnemonic devices, system of associations. For example:
We can remember the word viejo with an image of VA doctor trying to use a hoe to plow a field.

Not the best example, but I hope you understand the gist of what I am trying to say.

... how does that image relate to viejo at all?

but yes, I do understand what you're getting at. Like 18th Amendment said you can't drink alcohol (18 years...) and the 21st allows it again (21 years...)
[My APUSH class loved me for that one... biggrin I am loved!]

...I get off-topic too much, don't I? sweatdrop

viejo sounds a little like the word for wind... (viento)
Quote:
There's a chill wind blowin in my soul
and I think I'm growin old
...
There's no wind blowin in my sould
and I've grown old

Repetition, repetition, repetition...
I used to have a most amazing Spanish teacher in college. He actually invented his own teaching method, something a bit close to the Callan Method in English, only better, more meaningful. We only talked and repeated some phrase structures, simple sentences etc. but in different configurations. After some time, we didn't have to think about how to conjugate this verb or other it just... you know, happened. Pretty much as children learn their first language.
I teach English as a foreign language to children myself. They need to put the words in context, the word 'apple' means nothing to them by itself unless it's illustrated by a picture, a song or a story. You have to be imaginative, but they constantly amaze me with how much they can remeber and how imaginatively they use the words they know in new contexts.

Yes. Children tend to memorize things better. I don't remember why, but they do. I was over at a friend's house and David, the yougest, only 5, started counting something in English then he gave them to me and I started counting in Latin then in Japanese. Then he took them back and started counting in Japanese perfectly besides a few mispronoucitaions because of his speech problem. eek surprised

Repition is good too. If I only had a word list to copy out several times.

I actually like James W. Heisig's method best for pictures. He gives you an idea of what to think of that way you can think of it any way you want, but you still have the basic idea.
