Pele was suddenly wet, cold water dripping down her face. She blinked once before large tears of her own were added to the wetness. "Wahhhh!" Suddenly the world was rocking and spinning and dark and wet and scary and she was alone. Pele was back in the basket, in the nightmare of a swollen river.
Then the large, warm, loving wings of her father were wrapped around her. Pele was safe and loved and back in the world. Shivering, more from the memory than the water, Pele looked up at Maion. Her eyes large and trusting, full of love and confidence. He was here. And near by, She was here. Pele wasn't alone. Her tears stopped, forgotten. She was safe.
Spike hadn't done good. Sengdroma called him silly and Maion was not happy with Spike. His head hung in shame, the smile quickly gone. Then he heard it, the plaintive cry of young Pele and Spike's heart sank.
Spike had done wrong, Spike was bad. He sunk down to the ground and wrapped his paws over his head, hiding from the world but not running from the punishment he surely deserved. He had made Pele baby cry and nothing could be worse than that.

At the sight of little Pele's tears Maion's heart broke. "Shhhhh little one," he cooed, hoping it would sooth the little one along with the heat of his body. "Shhhhhhh you are safe now, I will never let anything happen to you. Shhhhh now."
He smiled down at his daughter, worry clinging to his heart but joined with hope.... hope for all the things this little one would grow up an experience. She was a strong one, that much was certain... she had survived so much already.
He looked to his mate, "What shall we treat little Pele to for her meal?" He asked as he turned his head to Spike, he knew the bear believed he was mad at him -and perhaps a small part of him was, but it was not within his heart to hold a grudge, not when the bear had had good intentions. If it had not been for the efforts of this bear then the basket and therefore little Pele would have died..... unacceptable. Putting a soothing tone to his voice he turned to Spike and softly asked, "Any suggestions little guardian?"

Spike slowly looks up. No one was mad at Spike. Sengdroma was nibbling Spike's ear and Maion even wanted to know what Spike thought. Spike studies them for a second, just to make sure it wasn't a trick, that they weren't waiting to hit Spike, but they were caring and expecting and Spike wouldn't let them down again.
But Spike had been asked a question, and he had an answer. There was a patch of blackberry bushes not far from the lake and it still contained some sweet berries. Of course, blackberry bushes had prickly bits, but Spike didn't mind them. "Berries, Pele-baby will like berries. Spike get berries for Pele-baby. Spike do good. Sengdroma Mama and Maion Papa see, Spike get good berries." And without waiting for another word, anxious to be helpful, Spike once again grabs the basket and hurries away.
Meanwhile, Pele was wet. Her coat twitched a little on its own and some of the water dropped away. If she could just do that on purpose . . .
Getting her legs under her again wasn't as difficult this time, though she moved slowly to make sure she didn't go haring off again. A bit wobbly, Pele was on her feet. First she shook her head, and giggled as water drops went flying. It wasn't the flying water that amused her as much as it was watching the light catch each one. She stopped when for a brief moment one of them reflected an array of colors. That was beautiful. It wouldn't compare to a true rainbow, but Pele hadn't seen a rainbow, so the comparison was lost on her.
Pele wondered if she could see it again, and, since her whole body was wet, she had more chances to try. It took a moment of shivering and twitching to get her body moving together, but then she was truly shaking and water droplets were flying in all directions, getting those still around her damp in the process. In silence Pele watched the water fly, her eyes large with wonder as they sparkled and shone and a few prism-ed.
Once she could shake no more water from her coat and the last of the droplets had disappeared into the grass or onto one of the others around her, Pele smiled, wide. She looked around, expecting everyone else to have been as pleased with the show she just created as she was, still lost to the fact that the 'show' got them all wet.

Sengdroma had been watching Spike carry the basket off to gather berries and did not notice the first few shakes of her daughter's 'show'. Suddenly, she felt the spray of cold water on her face, she jumped with a whinny, having been caught off guard.
Turning she saw the end of Pele's trick and laughed hard, 'Pele! you got us all wet!" she giggled and shook her face a bit, not that she minded the water that much, it was on a light spray. She looked to Maion, who had been closer than she was and had caught the majority of the water on himself, 'Oh, Poppa...." she tried not to laugh, "You've gotten all wet!"

Pele nodded, she would like to go where ever to see what ever. She was in love with the world and wanted to see it all. She moved her head so that her velvety nose touched her Papa's and gently blew out of her nostrils. A greeting as old as time and she knew it instinctively. She wasn't frightened by Maion, he was her Papa. Everything was bigger than Pele, except maybe Spike and Elijah, but they all loved her and protected her and she knew them even if she couldn't see them. This was her family.
Meanwhile, Spike picked berries. Now, Spike was used to picking berries, but he wasn't particularly accustomed to not eating the berries he picked. But he filled the basket with the berries and berry pulp and berry juice as he went. Once he thought he had enough, he took the basket back up and headed back to the family.
Spike trotted up and set the basket down next to Sengdroma. He knew Mamas fed babies, so Mama Sengdroma should be the one to give Pele the berries. Smiling up at the mare, Spike was very pleased with himself. He didn't know what a sight he was with blackberry juice all over his face and twigs snagged on or tangled in the fur that wasn't covered in stone.

Spike smiled at Sengdroma and Maion. Spike had done well, they were happy with Spike. He didn't even mind having 'Mama' Sengdroma cleaning his fur. His grin broad as the sky, he sat, proud, with his family.
Pele took in Papa's scent. A beaming grin, "Heewoah." As she turned to beam at Mama, Pele smelled something new, something rich and dark and warm and sweet and . . . what was that smell? It seemed to be coming from her old basket, and from Spike, who was stained purple around his mouth and paws.
Blinking, Pele sniffed, deeply. She didn't have too many words yet, and none of them seemed to match up with that smell, except maybe, "Bas-it?" Looking up from the basket to Mama standing next to it, cleaning Spike, a question clearly on her face, "Bas-it? Pele Bas-it? Bas-it hed?"
Pele wasn't sure what the smell was, but she was sure she wanted to know. She was equally sure that moving towards it would lead to more running and falling. So Pele stayed still, her legs shaking slightly, head reaching towards the smell, "Bas-it?"

Spike sat, watching the family, as he was cleaned. Soon he would go for a swim . . . and some fish. But for now, he was happy and cared for. This was his family and they thought he did good. His grin showed just how happy he was.
Pele took a half wobbling step with Maion's encouragement. She had watched Mama eat something from the basket. And the smell was so very entrancing.
Slowly lowering her nose towards the basket, Pele sniffed again. That was all it took. Her muzzle seemed to move of its own accord, plunging into the mass of berries and juices. She didn't notice the wet seep into the fur of her muzzle as she tasted her first bite of berries.
She also didn't notice that she was humming as she ate. She did, at one point, notice that she couldn't breath berry juice and she blinked as she raised her head, snorting the juices for a moment before dropping back into the basket to finish the sweet meal.
Licking the last of the juices from the sides of the basket, Pele felt full and happy. She looked up at her parents, smiling. "Bas-it louve Pele." Her muzzle was purple and there were spots and drops of berry juice all down her front, in her mane and one just over her right eye threatening to drip. There was no telling how she had gotten that one bit of berry pulp on her rump, but she didn't notice.
Pele swayed slightly, eyes drooping as the feeling of a full belly, the warmth of the sun, and the peace of her family converged to lull her towards sleep.
