Trudging slowly through the snow. It seemed like every step up the mountain just kept getting deeper and deeper. With dropping a blanket and nearly tripping on a rock hidden under the snow, helping his little sister crunch her way through his pre-made steps was enough to slow their progress. At first they had hurried through it to make an escape; but, by now, he was working at a snail's pace. The freezing temperatures beginning to turn his lips a shade of blue. They had to hurry, and by the time Delilah spoke her words of comfort, they were almost there.

"
See Luce, we're almost there. I'm sure they wont just abandon us in the cold." Lucy said nothing; but, Taylor knew her pessimism enough to know that she was not so easily swayed. If not for the chattering of her teeth and the shivering of her breaths, she probably would have piped up a sarcastic responce. Holding hands now, mostly just to keep from losing fingers, the pain in his extremities was what forced Taylor to kick bushes down and pave their way up to what actually was an adorable log cabin omiting smoke into the atmosphere.

"
Do you smell that? I think I smell bar-b-que.", it could have just been the kind of wood the man was burning, but he hoped that the sound of food -even if it sounded disgusting to him because of his nausea- would encourage a smile from Lucy's freezing mouth. She only managed a glare before crunching her little feet up to the door and pounding on it. Holding the blanket around her shoulders as Taylor hurried to stand behind her. Waiting for the door to open.

Thomas had been working in his cabin for months on the cure for the infection that swept across America. What kept him going, through all the failures, was his dying wife. He was lucky she was still showing the first few symptoms, but he knew that if he didn't find the cure that she would die. Every day, he wore his medical mask, his lab coat, and worked non-stop in the living room. Since he left the crew in the official lab, he had to turn his cabin into his secret laboratory. Suddenly, there were knocks on the door. Thomas nearly jumped, lucky that he wasn't doing anything important. He knew he was so close to finishing, so he spun around and marched towards the door.

Once the knob turned, he stared into the eyes of three sick kids. He could tell they were sick, their eyes spoke all their pain and misery. "Come in, please... take your shoes off." He wasn't going to let them freeze to death. Once they stepped inside, he checked out into the winter wonderland for any signs of people following them.

Nothing. Thomas let out a relieved sigh and closed the door. He nodded towards the newcomers, "Please, I have some stew on the stove... sit around the fire." He moved back towards his lab table and continued to work. He realized how rude he appeared, ignoring them after being so kind as to let three strangers into his home and eat his food. But Thomas was busy, he had to get work done. He had been subjected to many people with the infection, but he had never showed any symptoms. When The Lab realized he was immune, they wanted to take his blood, all of his blood, to cure America. Thomas wasn't very keen on killing himself for man kind. But he had worked on using his own blood to create a cure, the ones previous to the one he worked on now failed. But he had faith in what was in his hands now. If it worked, he would call his buddy Adam and let him know of his endeavor.

He turned his head towards the strangers, "Excuse my manners, I'm just so busy. My name is Thomas Archer, I am a scientist... I'm apart of the.." He corrected himself. "I was apart of this secret government lab...until I left due to differences in ..beliefs... I'm currently working on the cure to..." He pointed at them, "to cure this infection...I think I'm getting closer to the answer." He couldn't help it, he hadn't spoken to anyone in the longest time. His wife was in the bedroom, she had fallen into a deep depression after their daughter died of the infection in the very beginning. He just spilled nearly everything out onto the first three strangers that came into his humble home.

Lucy hurried inside the house like nobody's business to stand in front of the fireplace and press her fridig little hands to the heat radiating from the gorgeous flames. It would take a great deal of time for her hands to warm up enough to attempt kicking off her wet tennis shoes and socks to warm her toes, but she wasn't planning on moving from that spot for a while. Listening more than her stoic, disinterested, face displayed; Lucy contemplated telling her own truth to this man. ' but that would spoil everything.' Unlike her brother, Lucy really did just have a small bug caused by poor nutrition and a cold. Keeping herself unhealthy through those means alone, Lucy had been 'faking' as many symptoms as she possibly could in an effort to keep from being left at a 'safe zone'. After the death of their parents, Lucy wasn't going to allow her brother to leave her while he ran for safety. She just couldn't allow that to happen...he'd be lost without her. Close to admitting to herself that it was the other way around, Lucy just kept her eyes on the fire while her brother went into the kitchen to help himself to some stew.

"--to cure this infection...I think I'm getting closer to the answer." Lucy pursed her lips, thinking they were alone in the room, and walked up to 'Thomas Archer' and pulled on his lab coat. A piercing look staring up into his face. A pout shrewdly asking the question louder than her statement could.

"
How come your not infected too?", Lucy asked; more for herself than for concern for the man.

Thomas felt the tug on his coat and he immediately turned towards her. Her question brought a smile to his face. Her bluntness and her curiosity reminded him of his daughter. He looked towards the boy and the girl ferociously eating the stew and knelt down to see the younger girl eye to eye. "Don't tell anyone," He held out his pinky, hoping that maybe she understood what it meant. It was something he got in the habit of doing; It was something he and his daughter did for years, for every promise. He continued in a whisper, "I'm immune, which is why I'm figuring out this cure in a little cabin in the middle of no where. I can't let the big boys find me." He chuckled, hoping she got a laugh out of it, too. But if she were anything like his daughter, she would remain quiet and stoic.

Lucy didn't smile, but it she stared into his eyes with a forced stonewall. She wanted to smile, but like Wednesday Adams, Lucy just wasn't able to without pain. Either it be emotional pain now, or she would get attached to the person and get emotionally pained later. Lucy always chose the 'now' by being rude, and had to keep up the facade at all costs. ' If I be extra nice and smile, he'll know I like him.' She frowned and lowered her nose without moving her head similar to a distrustful wiggle. Lucy believed him; that was the problem. ' He can't know how much I want to tell him...but I think I'm immune too!' In a dilemma, she decided that the only way to keep her secret a secret was to disbelieve the older gentleman.

"
Pfft.", Lucy snorted and frowned a bit more. That was all the reply she made before kindly crossing her arms, almost smiling (her smile only resembling a strait face anyway) and walking back to the fire to take off her shoes. Shaking her head to give the impression to Taylor and Delilah that they had been talking about 'crock' or nonsense.

"
Are you feeling alright?", Lucy heard Taylor ask Delilah in the background, the concern in his voice almost making the 'nausea' in her stomach real. ' Oh just tell her you like her already. Your making me sick.'

"
This stew tastes really good Mr. Archer, thanks for letting us come inside...", in that Lucy actually grimaced. ' Why did you have to do that you dorkface?' She was thankful of course, but if her brother 'commented' she would be wordlessly expected to comment too or risk being rude or getting a scowl from her brother. ' Oh I hate giving compliments. I hate them.' She looked like she was in pain as her lips curled into as big a smile as she could physically make.

"
Yeah...Th...thank you.", Glad that awkwardness was over, she turned back towards the fire and lifted her foot to put it near the heat.

Delilah was thankful that the man had allowed their company. As soon as she could, she slopped herself a big bowl of stew. She sat herself on the counter, just wanting to rest her feet. She hard Thomas introduce himself and she listened to his story. It was interesting, he seemed trustworthy. She wanted to trust him, she wanted to like him. Delilah was just worried that he would suddenly 'turn evil' and the White Coats would burst through the door and take them all away. It was Thomas' own coat that threw her off. She just nodded as she continued to scoop the stew into her mouth. "Are you feeling alright?" Her attention was pulled towards Taylor and she shrugged, "I'm surviving." She smiled after she swallowed a large gulp.

When both Lucy and Taylor thanked the man, Delilah felt obliged to as well. But she just couldn't get herself to speak again. She was afraid that another voice crack would cause a fit of coughing. She just smiled at Thomas and continued to eat. The warmth from the fire already warming her up, even if she was all the way across the room. She watched Thomas turn towards them and nod, "Please, do not thank me. I'm only a sane man; Any other man in this country would have shut you out." She knew it was true. This man seemed to know what he was doing. It was official, Delilah Warren trusted this Thomas Archer.

Trying to eat as neatly as possible, the big cut chunks of meat in the stew were making that incredibly difficult, so he just hunched over his bowl while he ate. In listening to the man's story, he had felt oblidged to thank the man, it being in his nature to do so. However, the look his sister gave him afterward caused him to raise a curious brow. ' Just thank him Luce, don't nitpick something so small.' Shaking his head, Taylor didn't know why his sister had such difficulty making friends and forming attachments. Shaking his head, Taylor smiled and chuckled to Delilah's responce; but, his mind was still stuck on Lucy.

'
Its only been six months since mum died, she needs more time to heal I guess.', Finishing his stew, Taylor debated refilling it and handing some to Lucy. She hadn't eaten since last night, and after that long tredge through the snow, she would need to eat to keep her strength up. ' Like she'd listen to me...', Smiling, he turned to Delilah before standing up and setting the blankets beside the fireplace to warm them up.

"
Hah!", Taylor pretended to take his comment as a joke even though he knew it was true. Insistant upon not being caught 'down in the dumps'.

"
Its great that your trying to find a cure, I really don't want to interfere with your progress...You wouldn't happen to have another room for us to sit in would you?"

Thomas looked towards Taylor with a hidden smile beneath his mask. Once he was finished with this cure, he would test it out on his new friends. The boy's question made him think, but he nodded quickly. "Down the hall, second room on the right... there are two beds in there." He gestured down the hall with his free hand. "There is also a bathroom at the end of the hall, third door on the left... we have warm running water if you need a shower." He heard a gasp from Delilah's direction. He looked over as she set her bowl down. She walked towards him, Thomas felt nervous but her smile was wide.

He knew what she wanted, "Yes, you are allowed to use it." She bolted down the hall, "The lock is broken so..." She had shut the door to quick for him to finish his sentence. He chuckled and looked towards Taylor. "Is she your girl friend?" He chuckled again as he continued to work. "She's pretty." Thomas could never look at a young woman and think anything sexual of them. They were children in his eyes, but there was no doubting that the young woman that bolted for the bathroom was quite stunning.

"Down the hall, second room on the right... there are two beds in there." Lucy turned her head just in time to see Thomas gesture down the hall with his free hand. "There is also a bathroom at the end of the hall, third door on the left... we have warm running water if you need a shower. --Yes, your allowed to use it." Hearing Delilah's steps thud hurriedly towards the bathroom, Lucy turned around to see the last glimpse of her hair disappearing around the corner. ' Someones in an awful hurry.' Turning her hands around to warm the back of them again, Lucy raised her opposite foot to warm it in front of the fire as well. Looking quite silly without her socks on. Hearing a chuckle, Lucy expected to hear a funny comment; but, what she actually heard forced her to try and hold in air, resulting in a choke-like snort followed by a series of giggles.

"
PFFFT!!!", she clamped her eyes shut while giggling. ' Oh my gawd, I can't believe he said that!' Lucy knew her brother was probably blushing and rubbing the back of his head; stammering, so she replied for him as she walked towards that room Thomas had mentioned.

"
Ha! Hahahahahahahaha!", the 'yeah right' was evident in her voice as she held her hands to her stomach and allowed her face to redden heartily from amusement. ' Taylor's too shy to ask Delilah out. Pffft! Like they could even go on a date without being nabbed by the men in white coats.' Walking into the other room, Lucy decided to be the selfish one by taking the bed away from the window to set her blankets and things down beside.

While Delilah was undressing, using the toilet, and checking the water to make sure it was 'warm enough' there was a whole scene happening outside. She had no idea that Thomas had embarrassed poor Taylor and Lucy had made it worse. Thomas had only shook his head and continued to work. Delilah finally stepped into the water, the feeling of hot water against her dirty and cold skin was like heaven. It was like a dream come true. The shampoo felt unreal in her hands as she cleaned her long hair. Her eyes closed as she cleaned herself as perfect as possible. When she knew she had scrubbed off all the grime, she turned off the water and stepped out onto the bath mat.

It was like she was back in her own home, when she wasn't sick. The shower seemed to cleanse her body, mind, and illness. She felt cleared up and ready to go. But the constant ache in her body reminded her she was still sick. Quickly, Delilah grabbed a towel and dried herself off, then wrapped it around her body. She stepped out into the hallway to grab her backpack. She strutted into the kitchen, bent over carefully, and rushed back down the hall and into the bathroom. Once she felt safe, she let out her breath and started to dress.

She pulled out her baggy white t-shirt, black panties and matching bra. She didn't want to waste her jeans since she was probably just going to bed. Delilah stepped back into the hallway and thanked Thomas again before walking into the bedroom. She noticed Lucy already getting her bed ready. Delilah wasn't sure where she would sleep, since she wasn't sure if Taylor wanted to sleep with Lucy or not. She just placed her bag on the floor and sat at the edge of the bed. "Bathroom is open..." She stated, trying not to cough.

Not blushing nearly as terribly as his sister had assumed him to be, Taylor had run his hand through his hair to try and soothe himself long enough to formulate some kind of reply. Coughing quietly into his elbow, Taylor managed a simple 'ahem' to clear his throat before Lucy started laughing and walking into the bedroom. ' How nice...I'm not as pathetic as you think you know.', he had the shameless pleasure of knowing there had been girls in highschool who had a crush on him before he graduated, so it wasn't like he was an unattractive man. Like he supposed Lucy thought he was. Grumbling his lip, Taylor just shook his head and took his bowl to the kitchen to rinse them out.

'
I wonder how long we'll be able to stay here...A week? A few days? Til tomorrow?', Taylor wanted to be optomistic with a week at least, to stay longer was just unheard of....unless... ' Unless we're going to be his guinea pigs...' Taylor had to laugh at that; but, what if it was true? A strange claw gripped his heart at the thought of 'dying' from some potential cure. ' But what choice do we have?'

Hearing a noise in the background that sounded like a footstep, Taylor turned his head from the sink just in time to see a towel-clad Delilah disappearing out of the room. His eyes welling up from surprise, he quickly shook his head and walked the few steps out of the kitchen to look into the hallway to reassure himself that he hadn't just been hallucinating. Seeing her foot disappear into the bathroom before a quiet 'slam' signalled the door closing, Taylor took a breath and returned to the kitchen to wash the dishes.

~

A while later, having decided to wash the other dishes as well as a 'thank you', Taylor poked his nose into the bedroom to see his sister organizing things on one of the beds, and Delilah seated atop the other one. Thankfully wearing more than just a towel; but, not by much. '
God, stop looking at her legs.', Closing his eyes, he purposefully turned his head away to look in Lucy's direction. Giving the matter some thought earlier, he had concluded that this gentle-man might prefer him sleeping on the couch to give the ladies a place of their own. Even if he was only going to lay next to Lucy like he always did, after that question -which he had blushed slightly to in responce- Thomas might not be comfortable with that idea. So he wasn't going to suggest it.

"
Are you both going to bed?", he questioned with a questioning glance in Delilah's direction.

"
I'm not sure yet; but, maybe.", Lucy finished folding a shirt and set it down on the 'shirts' pile before giving her brother a piercing stare and pressing her hand on her hip. " Why, do you want me to leave?" Taylor's eyes widened with the: 'I'm going to kill you, you little brat' look; but, he just softened his face. Not wanting to embarrass himself in front of delilah.

"
No...I was wondering if you wanted to hear a bedtime story.", Lucy glared at that. She was much too old to hear 'bedtime stories'. Scoffing, Lucy started folding her clothes again.

"
I would be getting ready too lazy-bones. He could ask us to leave at -any- time.", Sometimes, Taylor just wanted to smack that child.

Delilah couldn't help but giggle at the brother and sister relationship. Lucy seemed to be the smartest 12 year old Delilah had ever met. She adjusted her long shirt to cover any possibility of a horribly infamous 'panty shot'. By Lucy's demeanor and response to Taylor, she could sense some kind of tension in his general direction. Not that she didn't mind, it had been a while since a guy had shown any kind of interest in her. She was probably just being ignorant, since she almost never noticed when a guy liked her. But what caused Delilah to look away and hide a red tint to her cheeks was Lucy's comment: "Why, do you want me to leave?"

Delilah quickly let out a sharp giggle, to make an excuse to cover he lips and turn back to them. "I may go to bed," She looked towards Taylor. "Did you want the bed? I could just as easily switch over to the couch..." She leaned back on her hands, unintentionally rising her shirt ever so slightly. Her toes curled against the carpet as she let out a yawn, closed her eyes, and tilted her head back.

Seeing Delilah giggle at Lucy's comment and turn her pretty face away was all the incentive Taylor needed to know that just maybe Delilah liked him a little. Even if it wasn't obvious, and his body was physically too sick to think of anything besides holding hands and snuggling, it gave Taylor enough encouragement to stay in the room.

"I may go to bed,"
Well your certainly dressed for it. She turned to look at him, and he tried to hide his grin.

"Did you want the bed? I could just as easily switch over to the couch...", Heaven forbid she do that. With a smile, Taylor reached up to push his hair behind his ear with a gentle shake of the head being his answer.

"
Oh no, You can have the bed. I don't know how long we're allowed here, so I can sleep on the couch. No biggie. Plus, thomas there might disapprove having a woman on the couch.", Taylor had to stop talking then, because his eyes darkened slightly. Whether she meant to or not, Delilah was showing off her body and he was certainly noticing. Unable to keep his eyes from wandering, Taylor looked her over as she changed her position and avoided his eyes from seeing any panty shots. Reaching up to pull at his collar, he coughed once and looked away for a moment.

"
But I'm not going to sleep for a while, since Thomas is doing research, so I can stay and chat for a while if you want too." Lucy rolled her eyes and started to leave the room with her pj's in her hand.

"
Good gawd...I'm leaving.", Taylor's face reddened as Lucy waltzed out of the room and purposefully closed the door behind her. She figured she could have a private talk with Thomas about possibly being immune, of all people, she felt Thomas would understand.

Delilah chuckled at Taylor's attempt at a joke, or what she thought was a joke. He sat up and crossed her legs. She wasn't really tired, but she wasn't going to put on pants just to take them off again later. Her eyes widened when Lucy so rudely left the room and shut the door behind her. Suddenly, for probably the first time, she was alone with Taylor. Not just with Lucy asleep, but actually alone. She bit her lower lip, "It's nice to talk." She looked up at him and patted the spot beside her.

She wasn't going to watch him stand there awkwardly. "Do you trust him...?Thomas, I mean." She cocked her head to the side. "Because I do, I have a feeling this guy would more than likely let us stay for at least a week..." She giggled. She loved to be optimistic, it gave her something to be happy about. Even if she was physically ill and probably had a high chance of dying, she still wanted something, anything to keep her smiling.

Then she looked at Taylor. Delilah realized how much having Taylor around was really a blessing. He gave her someone to talk to, someone to share a common goal with, someone to suffer with... she let her thoughts ramble on as her gaze fell to her toes. Another smile crept onto her lips, but she refused to let herself speak. She was afraid she'd say something embarrassing.

Not thinking things through, Taylor sat down about half a foot away from Delilah and debated reaching up and behind him to scratch his head again. Keeping his hands in his lap, Taylor cracked his knuckles for a moment until Delilah started talking.

"Do you trust him...?Thomas, I mean." She cocked her head to the side. "Because I do, I have a feeling this guy would more than likely let us stay for at least a week...". Hearing Delilah giggle brightened his mood considerably. He was a hopelessly optomistic man, and he loved that he had someone else to talk to who was just as 'cup half full' as he was. Smiling at seeing Delilah smile, Taylor turned to face her.

"
I do. I don't know him very well, but he let us stay here. Even if something were to happen, at least he took the time to try and make us welcome. I mean, if that cure works...then we wont have to keep running anymore." Taylor flashed his hundred watt smile and twiddled his fingers on the comforter, debating whether to grab Del's hand.
