Nate frowned, watching her hands as she finished the rest of the song for him.
"I knew that," he said, motioning to the keys, "I just got bored of it." He grinned though, his lie a very thin one. He clearly had not known it, and he was aware that she could see right through him. But that wasn't the point of saying it: he was just shrugging it off as though he didn't care that he had messed up.
Even though he did.
He was not very fond of making mistakes, particularly when people were around to see it. It made him feel stupid, and that was his least favorite state of being. So he tried to shrug it off as fast as possible.
Sighing, he made to play it again, following her instructions with a grumpy expression on his face.

Lily rolled her eyes at Nate's little lie, he definitely did not know it and she knew that just as well as he did. Lily was amused by him however, often he was very easy to read, like an open, book much like her sister said she could be. She shook her head of the though and turned to play with Nate.
She hoped it would be easier if he could hear the and see the song being played while he played it, not really thinking at all about it how it might be confusing, as she was playing higher than he was, but it matter not. Lily was definitely not a piano teacher and she was trying her very best to help, she was far better at teaching someone to sing, which amazed her family as it came naturally to her which usually would have made it harder to teach.
She closed her eyes while she played listening for mistakes, the obvious difference in what they were playing. She would have to correct him if, no when, he messed up, but she would be nice and patient about it.

Nate grinned and feigned innocence for only a moment.
Nathan kept his eyes on the keyboard, playing over the keys carefully, thoughtfully, doing his best to play well. For about a minute of the song, at least, before he got bored and fumbled through the rest, shaking his head.
"I'll practice it later," he said, making to stand. He wasn't lying, at least not completely. He would play it later, when he was struck with the urge, but he wouldn't call it practicing. He did not do things for any purpose, but only did them when it pleased him. Sometimes he had to make an effort to define the two, and keep them separate. The last thing he wanted was someone expecting something of him.
Particularly something like this, something like him improving or doing good.
That came with a big risk of letting someone, or himself, down.
"I should probably get out of here before Tony starts to think he was right," he grumbled, shaking his head.

Lily was smiled as Nate played along with her, for a minute anyway, which was about how long he managed to keep up. She couldn't help, but to frown even though she tried unsuccessfully to keep it to herself.
When he said he would practice, Lily nodded, "Yes, I think that would be wise," she said softly before smiling and stating, "you know what they say. Practice makes perfect right."
Lily stood and closed the key cover to the piano before looking around to make sure everything was in working order while Nate seemed to be getting ready to leave. When he said he had better leave she nearly laughed at his reasoning wondering why many teens were like that with their parents. She never minded her parents knowing they were right.
"Yes," she said a giggle escaping," you wouldn't want that would you."
She turned and made her way off the stage and started toward the auditorium door, but before she made it she turned to Nate, "Sorry I am not the best teacher. I do not often try to teach piano, I hope you do not mind my style. Next time we meet maybe you can teach me something."
Lily turned and headed out the auditorium door to let Mr. Mason know to lock up. "Goodbye Nathan, good night," she called as she headed through the doors.

Nate didn't think Tony was right, in the end. Sure, he had come here, and he had spent some time here, and it had distracted him from other things, but that did not make Tony right. Nate came here for his own reasons, and stayed for his own reasons, not because Tony had told him to, and not because he had wanted to 'stay out of trouble'.
So, clearly, Tony was wrong.
He shook his head at her apology, shrugging his shoulders.
"You're not so bad," he offered, by way of a compliment. He wasn't good at those, so he had to hide them inside slightly disparaging remarks. Implying that she was slightly better than bad was, at least as far as he was concerned, was more of a compliment than most people got out of him. So she should be thankful for that.
"Teach you something, huh? Maybe I will," he grinned. He had an idea now, to go home and practice something that was not the song she had just shown him. But rather, something he wanted to play. A lot more upbeat and unconventional, maybe. He nodded when she said bye, moving to head out as well.
"See ya later."
