Cars!
"That's so cool!" Vanessa beamed at Ellie, golden eyes wide with absolute sincerity. "I guess that means you drive too, hey? I have before, but only a couple of times. Dad tried to teach me how."
'Tried' being the keyword there. Mr. Rae had been a patient enough teacher, but there was only so much he could do when his daughter's road rage was about the equivalent of an entire outlaw motorcycle gang. Vanessa was an enthusiastic, but very careless driver. It was just better if she didn't.
"He's really busy all of the time, though, so I never really learned."
Big Willy, who had leant Mr. Rae and Vanessa his old boat of a car and then had it returned to him with a dozen or so extra scratches, coughed conspicuously as he took Ellie's money and avoided Vanessa's gaze.
"Did I always want to open up my own music store?" the round man's voice was deep, and pleasantly raspy. He scratched his bald head and looked at Ellie in such a way that it was very obvious he hadn't expected to be asked any questions. Vanessa usually did all of the talking. It was one of the reasons he'd hired her, and one of the things he missed most about having her around all the time.
"Nah," he shrugged after a moment, "I wanted to be an artist."
Vanessa grinned toothily at Ellie and said, "He's really good! I've seen some of his paintings."

The blonde looked the man straight in the face, unafraid of assessing him with her eyes. He looked as if he could have belonged in that hippie era due to age. However, looks were always deceiving at times. Maybe he was an 80s child who didn't age very well? Either way, the man obviously hadn't be raised in an era of realistic expectations. Most artists these days went in knowing that the stereotype was the "starving" artist scenario.
"Eh..." She really couldn't sympathize. And to make matters worse, she wasn't exactly the artsy type. "At least ya got someplace people like, right?" The tomboy half shrugged before addressing what Vanessa had asked.
"Depends what yer talkin' 'bout... I can drive my motorcycle... and though I technically can drive cars, I can't legally drive those yet. I'm waitin' t'finish my current project before gettin' that license." She shuffled her change off of the counter before pocketing it. "Sucks ya never learned... oh well... what can ya do?"

Big Willy wasn't forthcoming about his age. He was also not a starving artist. Painting was something that he did for himself, in his spare time. His work was something that he shared only with close friends and people that he cared about-- people he knew cared about him. In his youth, he had aspired to fame, and then decided that he wasn't suited to the limelight.
And he wasn't.
"I like this place just fine," Big Willy nodded comfortably at Ellie. He didn't need her sympathy. If she thought that he was unhappy with the cards fate had dealt him, then she was wrong.
"You drive a motorcycle?!" Vanessa beamed at Ellie, and looked a bit like a child who'd just been told Christmas was coming early. Man. Ellie just got more and more awesome by the minute.
If Vanessa was a little bit jealous, it wasn't her fault.
"I skateboard," she offered enthusiastically, "I'm pretty good, too."
This was not on the same par as vehicles with engines. But it was something.

"Yeah... do ya need me t'pull out my license as proof?" It wasn't much work, but it would require her to pull out the already pocketed wallet. If there was one thing that the blonde was starting to notice as a trend, it was that other tomboys seemed to fill that void in their motorcycle-less life with a skateboard. Sydney also was a boarder.
"My skills are with motorized vehicles I guess... I ain't got sh*t t'show when it comes t'skateboards. Can't even keep my balance." Skateboards were so flimsy in comparison to the bulk of a motorcycle.
"Well dudes, it's been a blast... gotta go make my dad stop nerdin' out!" She lifted up a hand and waved it before turning around.
There was a very particular cat she needed to have a word or two with.

"Oh, no, that's okay," Vanessa waved her hands in the air, and used them to let Ellie know that she didn't need to see her license, "I trust you."
There wasn't any reason not too. As far as Vanesa could tell, this other young lady had been nothing but honest with her. And Vanessa had always been as gullible as she was kind.
It took all sorts of grace and balance and co-ordination to be a good skateboarder. Vanessa was very proud of herself, but also jealous of the blonde's apparent skill and ease with vehicles. She would like to learn more about them. Someday.
"Good-bye," Vanessa returned Ellie's wave, and nudged Big Willy with a pointed look on her face until he did too, "have a fabulous day!"
