"Well... How much do you know about how things played out with the 'plague'?" C'mor asked, setting down his spoon and sipping at his klah, a frown creasing his brow. "A bad business over all," he murmured, "I would have liked to think a rider incapable of an act like that but... Well, I suppose idealism like that is just dangerous in the end, isn't it?"

Honour didn't matter to some people. Power. Revenge. They seemed to motivate far more than what ought to motivate... Was he really cut out for any politically important position, even wingleader or second? Could he do anything to improve things, or would he just be crushed under the wheels, or twisted to be just like them? He didn't want to believe he was capable of that, but could he honestly say that there was nothing in the world that could drive him to poison a man? It was an ugly question, on he didn't want to look at too hard. He wasn't like that. He wouldn't.

B'shir shook his head. He'd heard. Tanda had been very explicit in detailing everything she knew about the whole affair, assuming that it would be something he wanted to know and leaving it up to B'shir's discretion whether he chose to share his knowledge with anyone else. B'shir had opted to keep the news to himself. There was, he felt, no reason to alarm people or upset them over things they couldn't change. It had been a difficult decision to make.

"Tanda told me most of it," he said. "The whole horrendous affair was...disappointing. 'Riders should never, under any circumstances."

He sighed, frustrated. "There is a right way to accomplish things and a wrong way, and I'm inexpressibly sorry that in this case it was definitely gone about in the wrong way. I can only hope the Holds never find out about this bit of idiocy."

Idiocy. What a way to refer to murder. It was such an understatement, so inadequate, but already B'shir knew that if the Weyr was to minimize the damage the incident did to the Weyrs' reputations, it would have to be downplayed as much as possible.

More secrets for their own good? Sakneth asked, idly curious.

Yes, B'shir replied. And for the good of the Weyrs.

Ah. So for our good, then. Very well. Carry on.

Disappointing. That was one heck of an understatement but B'shir was B'shir: he hadn't exactly expected an emotional outpouring. "They'll find out, I'm sure of it," C'mor sighed after a moment, pushing away the remains of his porridge. "New travels fast, and bad news doubly so. It won't be long before somebody says something in confidence to a good friend at the Hold and the whole thing is common knowledge... I have to say though," the dark-skinned young man frowned again, "they're doing a good job of keeping where K'ban was sent quiet... Still," C'mor shook his head slightly, dismissing the issue for the time being, "other news." If only it was as easy to forget the whole issue as it was to change the subject.

"Weyrlingmaster R'o retired for a start," he nodded, sipping at his klah, "and it seems like a whole new system of lessons for weyrlings is being planned now. I'm not sure if they'll go through with it yet or not, but at the moment it sounds as though almost any rider can volunteer to give a few lessons. Not sure what I think of this," C'mor sighed, resting an elbow on the table and cupping his chin in his hand. "On the one hand, it could be good for weyrlings to hear for a wide range of people, but on the other hand it could be a disaster of miscommunication and inconsistency... Oh, Wingsecond Kessa stepped down from her post, taking on the role of a wingrider; no idea why though. A couple of deaths between too; Wingsecond P'ren and former Weyrwoman Kindlely. Kindlely said she was dying beforehand, but nobody really knows much about either of the deaths; I couldn't say if that was because they were especially secretive, or if everyone just missed the signs amongst all the other turmoil though."

A lot had happened since B'shir and the others had left for Ghenza, so much in fact that he could hardly get his head around it. Things were changing in the world. He wished he could hazard a guess as to whether this was a good thing or a bad thing.

"We'll be wingleaders, that is a good change," Naedreth pointed out. "Anything else that happens we will deal with. We are the best." And that, in his eyes, was that.

Enough plague talk, please, Sakneth complained. It is long done and boring.

"I still hope it doesn't reach the Holds. It's not the kind of rumour we need circulating. It's not the kind of publicity we want. Not at this point in the Interval."

A bark of laughter escaped from B'shir as C'mor enumerated the changes which had taken place in his absence, many of which had not made it into Tanda's illicit letters. A thoroughly irreverent and inappropriate thought had crossed his mind and he couldn't help giving voice to it, even though he really should not have done so, and probably would not have done so if he had been the same person he was when he left for Ghenza.

"I begin to think A'ram's death was a form of protest against all these changes. He would have hated all of it."

B'shir had his own reservations about the idea of the new system of training weyrlings, but since it wasn't something he was likely to have to deal with, he supposed it would do no harm to try something new for a time. Unless, of course, it did do harm, and then there would be a clutch of ill-trained riders out there, bumbling around and messing everything up.

He drained his cup and looked at it contemplatively. He didn't want a second, even though he was enjoying catching up with C'mor. Probably, then, he was going to have to get up and get about his day. It wasn't an entirely unwelcome prospect, now that he had food in his stomach and some conversation and news to occupy his thoughts.

"I guess I should be off," he said. "I'm glad we got this chance to talk. We should do it more often, I think."
