Drashi smiled, it seemed this young filly had something in common with him.... for he too liked the solitude and comfort that came with exploring and travelling on his own. Still, this one was young, she should be playing and enjoying her childhood... there was time for seriousness later. "I believe your aunty Alice is due to have her children soon, I am sure you will have much to teach them when they arrive.... perhaps one of them will enjoy joining you on your travels?" He smiled, knowing how lonliness could consume a person if it was they always sought.

Then he froze..... he could smell..... something? He eyes darted to the nearby trees, he had seen his father tense moments before, knew the old man had scented it too.... but still he didn't wish to scare the little ones so after only allowing a moments pause he continued onwards.... it was not unusual for strangers to appear in the herd, if they tried to get too close to the herds centre, especially since there was a pregnant mare there they would be stopped. He trusted his fellow protectors..... but still the forboding feeling refused to shift!

Eden didn't even blink at the sudden declaration of love from her brother, in fact part of her thought 'well of coarse you do...' But she would never say that, she loved her brothers and family and saying such cold things would hurt them, and she would never do that on purpose. Instead she gave him one of her small rare smiles, nipped at his mane in turn and replied. "I love you too Crown." She always felt silly saying such things, to her it was obvious that they all loved each other, but she had noted that they looked a little sad when she didn't respond in kind, and so she had started to try and express herself better.

Looking up at Drashi again and nods. "Yes she is, but I'm sure they will want to teach their foals things rather than letting others do so. Besides I wouldn't call my walks travel, I haven't even left the herd lands yet." Her eyes passing between the two stallions, she had noted that they had both hesitated and wondered if something was wrong. Looking at her brother she leaned close and whispered. "Stay close and don't jump around so much." It wasn't usually something she would say, but if something was wrong Crowns exuberance would attract unwanted attention, and the last thing she wanted was someone getting hurt, especially her brother. Besides she was sure Crown would be upset if someone else got hurt because of him.

Aveve was the first to spot them coming up the path as she hid in the shadows, red eyes gleaming dangerously as she formed her own plans in her mind. She looked back towards the approaching hulking beast that was her father. She turned back towards the group, a brisk breeze blowing her chocolate mane against her sleek neck.

Her tail curled slowly back and forth and she bowed herself in, tossing her mane to hide her eyes behind it's locks. Slowly, almost meekly she stepped out of the shadows into the path of the oncoming group. Her tuffed tail tucked under her body wings folded down in a broken way and nose nearly touching the ground she walked slowly

"You shouldn't be here ...." her voice was sweet, almost angelic in tone. "this forest is not safe." Well honed muscle rolled under the leathery hide, her red runes glowing softly against the dappled gray hide. Thorns wrapped tight around her neck, one almost seemed ride to punch right through the flesh it pressed against.

Deception stayed back farther in the shadows, a sense of pride as he watched his daughter work, there was advantages to not looking full kalona, it put others off guard and she'd learned well to use this to her advantage.

The larger kalona waited muscles rolling and flexing beneath his coat, a soft breeze blowing through his messy black mane. He knew his daughter's game well, she would try to lure them in deeper, decide the weakest member of the party and then would give him the signal to come forth.

The problem .. more than one Angeni traveled in this group, he had faced the breed before one on one and had fared fine but two on one, or even one going after his daughter untested against the breed could cause a problem. His tongue flicked out to run across his lips as he considered their course of action.

He finally decided that his daughter was strong, she could handle a silly Angeni.

Rocking back he slipped just far enough back into the shadows that the group wouldn't see his eyes glowing in the darkness. There the beast waited for his daughter to spring their trap.

[[So sorry I haven't replied, had some RL issues. But I am back now and will more active and a lot speedier with my replies. Thanks for being patient guys! Love you *huggles*]]

Maion caught the action of Drashi and copied his son, it wasn't long before he picked up the scent of another. It wasn't unusual for visitors and strangers to make their way through the Miakoda herd lands; yet something about this seemed odd. As if the visitors were purposefully trying to stay hidden, watching and listening but always out of sight. That was enough to put the old stallion on his guard. He glanced over his shoulder to see Crown and Eden standing close together, the colt seemed unaware while the wisdom beyond her years had allowed Eden to pick up on something being wrong. Maion didn't like spooking foals; believing that they should always feel loved, cherished and protected.... but sometimes there simply was no other course of action.

Maion turned his attention to Drashi and nodded to him, thankful that his son had accompanied him. From the herd Drashi was the second strongest protect they had, he was true and honest but a skill that could rival most.... but two foals made this tricky.

Especially as their darkest nightmare came true. Out of the shadows came a beautiful and elegant creature, a creature with the scent of tainted blood- as if the mare had ate from the flesh of another at least once. Her gentle words sent the hairs on Maion's neck standing on edge. Something was wrong. No matter how beautiful and seemingly unthreatening she appeared.... Maion had the feeling he could not trust a word she spoke. Not willing to simply jump to conclusions, and hoping to keep the foals calm and unpanicked Maion addressed the mare as he would any other. "Good morning M'lady. We do not fear this forest, it is our home and has been part of the Miakoda herds land for some time. You are welcome to pass through as long as you mean no harm." That was the one rule they had, pass in peace or leave in pieces. Maion was only thankful that there was only one.

Crown heard his sister whisper and didn't even contemplate ignoring her. She was the eldest after all, and he had always respected her as such. Yet as he slowed his movements to a stand still he didn't really understand what was going on.

So much so as a mare appeared from the forest he found himself excited, someone new to meet! He had never seen anyone with leather wings like a bat before, Io had a pet bat but she was so much smaller than the mare that stood before them. Crown leaned over to his sister and whispered; "Pretty."

Drashi nodded back to Maion just before the mare appeared. Instantly his body tensed to a fighting possition..... a Kalona! His eyes scanned her body. Horns and leather wings. Both strong characteristics of the dreaded beings, the foes to the Angeni. Yet something was off about this specimen... her tail.... it was that of a Kirin. Or so he believed it was. He had heard stories of cross breeds, often they went insane unless they developed a balance towards one of their two mixes. On appearances Drashi would say this mare was more Kalona.... but her voice and attitude.... could she be more pure?

Unsure he decided to wait and watch. Ready for Maion's orders should they come.

Eden glanced at Crown and then back to the mare, nodding in answer to his whispered words, replying with her own very soft ones for his ears alone. "Pretty like a snake..." Not sure why, the Mare didn't look a thing like a snake, but with how the stallions were acting she had a distinct impression that, this pretty mare was about as dangerous as one. Moving slightly to shelter her brother more from notice, fluffing up her large wings, just generally trying to hide him.

Her eyes flicking between the three grown ups, deciding to try and distract Crown for now, she didn't want to see him scared. "Lets play the number game... I'm thinking of a number between 1 and 10, you have 3 chances to guess it and if your wrong all 3 times its my go again." Her voice small, this a not very exciting game, but it would hopefully occupy Crown enough that he didn't get scared or too excited.

She slowly titled her head to the side, making sure to keep her eyes hidden behind rivers of silken chocolate mane "but there's a devil in these woods ..." she faked a shiver "Wouldn't want him to get a hold of the babies..." she grinned slightly, but the grin was slightly off. She turned then swinging her hips around, sharp cloven hooves dancing gracefully over the earth, so her chest faced the group.

Now she studied them, the larger one, speaking like he owned these woods, he had pretty wings .... Master Xibalba might like one of those feathers. Her tail came un-tucked and curled back and forth slowly like a big cat considering what it's next action would be.

She stretched her wings out for a moment, flapping them softly before folding them back down close to her back, she giggled a moment sharp pearly fangs flashing in the low light of the forest.

Maion narrowed his eyes as he listened to the words... something was definatly off. "A devil you say," his voice steady and firm. He knew he had to remain calm, to keep his voice the same so that the foals wouldn't be spooked by what was going on. "And how would you know of such a thing?" The fact was that these forests had been part of the Miakoda herd lands for as long as he could remember, and no member of the herd had ever been injuried or hurt because of something that naturally lived there... which meant that it was likely this 'devil' was a visitor just like the strange mare before him.

Maion found himself torn, he needed to do two things. Protect the foals and find the threat.... her words gave him the distinct impression she was not alone, and he needed to figure out where the threat was and how outnumbered they were. Knowing he couldn't do it all on his on he turned his head slightly to the left, a subtle indication that he wanted Drashi to join him for a moment. It was one of the signals they learnt in training, silent communication often gave you the element of surprise.

Drashi felt the hairs stand up on his neck but he remained silent. His eyes scanning the area, and it was sheer luck that he had turned to face Maion in time to see the signal. Following it he stepped closer but not too close.

Maion heard the soft patter of Drashi's hooves on the ground, and when he was closer Maion spoke two words in a whisper. "Protect. Foals." He knew his son would do what he asked, and would do it well. That would leave Maion to use his full attention to discover any threats. Nothing seemed to moving in the shadows.... but that meant nothing. It seemed they were going to have to play the waiting game.

Drashi moved towards the foals. He would protect them with his life.

Crown felt a shiver of nerves run through his body. He could tell something was happening, if only by the fact that Eden seemed to be acting strange. Still he tried to do as she said. "Em.... five....?" Figuring he was probably wrong, after all he was usually wrong when it came to guessing games. "Nine? One?"

Shaking her head, watching as the younger of the stallions moved closer, she didn't like that move. Her attention still half on Crown she shakes her head, giving him a glance and a smile, all be it a small slightly nervous one. "No, none of those, I was thinking of 2... So my turn again, but if you get it wrong again it can be your turn instead..." Her voice still soft, keeping it low, glad there were 3 of them between danger and Crown, finding herself looking round to see if something was coming up from behind. "So between 1 and 10 again..." Her attention back on the white stallion again, trying to cover the back end, though she was only a foal and had no idea what she was doing, she just wanted to help, and least she could do was watch the back.

Oops, seems her game might have been caught on to quicker than she would have hoped. She watched the stallions move into place around the two foals, as if it matter .. she didn't want the pipsqueaks. She giggled inwardly to herself, well then she must prepare for the next phase of the game then.

She snapped her tail hard, and it nearly made a crack like a snapping bullwhip.

She grinned then, her mouth contorting into a malicious and insane mockery of a smile, pearly fangs glimmering in the low light.

Tossing her small head, the chocolate mane finally fell back out of her eyes. They say the eyes were the windows to the soul, if that was so then this mare's was a twisted place. Her eyes were pure red, only the bright half circle that should have been pupils in a normal eye, glowed out from the red pools.

"There's nowhere for you to run, nowhere for you to hide when death calls your name", the angelic voice didn't match the demon that had revealed itself fully for them now.

('ception will come back in next post.)

Maion came forward, snapping all four of his majestic wings wide; he did so for two reasons... one, the slight hope that it may deter the dainty looking mare from her chosen path and two, it hide the foals and Drashi from sight -or so he hoped, he still hadn't identified if the mare was alone or not. And now with her words changing to those of a threatening nature Maion knew he had to act sooner rather than later.... the sooner he acted, the less likely it would be that one of his loved ones would injured. In that moment he cared nothing for his own life.

He didn't speak or rise to the bait of the mares words, simply waited.... he suspected he wouldn't be waiting long, and something in his soul told him that what was about to unfold was going to hurt and leave a scar or two in its wake.

Drashi saw his fathers wings flash open and saw it for what it was... a sign of silent aggression, and the fact that Maion found the need for it worried Drashi more than anything else.

His eyes looked to the foals for a moment, and as he saw the pair quietly whispering between themselves he felt a wave of pride over their bravery... though he suspected it was possible they had not intrepretted the mares words the same way he and Maion had.

Innocence.... he would do anything to protect it.

Crown wasn't surprised that he had guessed wrong, and he had been about to guess again when he noticed Maion's wings flare open. He had been so distracted that he hadn't heard any words being exchanged, had saw no expressions or actions.... but the way Maion's wings looked.... it was magnificent... strong.... and Crown couldn't help but be jealous as he looked at his own tiny wings.

Distracted by the 'action' Crown failed to answer Eden as he simply stared at the back of Maion, no longer able to see the mare he knew to stand just beyond him.

What was going on? "Eden," he whispered, wondering if maybe she knew, "....what's happening?"

Eden had heard, and now instead of looking around trying to cover their tails she was looking forward again. Her young innocent eyes meeting Drashi's. Yes she was innocent but she was too clever for her own good, she knew exactly the threat those words had held and it showed on her face a moment before she smiled turning and talking to her brother softly. Clearly that was her main thought, to protect her little brother from knowing too, she trusted in the stallions and placed herself in the way to protect her brother, from danger and fear. Smiling sweetly at Crown, more than she usually would. Her voice still quiet. "You forgot to guess." Wracking her brains to come up with a reason for why Maion opened his wings like that. Looking back ahead of them and shrugging trying to seem like nothing was wrong. "Maybe he got a cramp, or maybe something got caught between the feathers. We can ask him to let us help when he has finished talking to the stranger." Smiling back to her brother, winging it.

She grinned as his wings snapped out and lowered herself slightly, shoulders hunching up. "You're weakness for these creature will be your downfall.", she sounded so sure, a weaker Soquili might have taken her as prophetic but Aveve doubted this one would .. no matter he still wouldn't see the next sunrise, if she had her way none of them would.

Her tail snapped behind her again and her muscles tensed prepared to spring at them, yet she wasn't, she seemed to be waiting on something her grin wide.

It was at that moment, with a bellowed roar that startled the birds in the trees sending them scattering to the four winds that her father emerged.

One moment he was a ghost in the shadows, the next Deception stood between his daughter and the two stallions. He was a massive stallion, standing head and shoulders above the average Soquili, a heavy frame stacked with thick muscles hard as coiled steel. A leathery brown coat stretched over his frame, dotted with dapple, and etched with the same glowing runes his daughter possessed. Soulless white eyes glowed out of his skull stareing the two Angeni's down with no hint of emotion in their depths.

Unlike Aveve, his long tail was crowned by a sharp spade, and wicked looking spikes jutted from his hind legs.

His massive wings folded down tight against his sides, and her sneered at the two stallions his voice rumbling out, with the threatening baritone of far off thunder "So nice of you two to bring us a little entertainment .... and snacks." Whether his eyes drifted to the two foals direction or not couldn't be told.

Crown felt a slight shudder run through his small and fragile body, he moved his wings protectively around him, the tips meeting at the front to give himself a slight hug. Eden was hiding something... he could tell by the increase in smiles and attention, she only ever did that when she was trying to hide something. And on top of that Drashi and Maion seemed to be hiding something too. They looked.... too serious in Crown's little mind.

Of course he had thought that before the strange voice came out of no where, and unable to stop it he let out a yelp and reared up slightly in fear... natural instinct telling him to run while common sence told him he was safest here with Maion, Drashi and Eden.... and then there was a small whispering voice that wouldn't allow him to leave his sister is there was danger. With the last of his courage he stepped forward once more, towards his sister and simply buried his head into her mane. "Three...." He said after a long time. Desperate to distract himself from his shaking legs and fast beating heart.

Maion could have sworn as the other Kalona appeared, and even his best efforts at being stoic caused a slight look of discomfort at the situation to flicker over his features.

In Maion's mind having love and connections with his herd and the foals within it was anything but weakness, though he could see why this monster before him would say it was so.... they would use the foals against him to get what the wanted, he knew it before it even happened that they would not show mercy based on their age. Maion was not afraid to die... but he was afraid to lose someone that he loved and held dear.... and that was everyone within the Miakoda herd.

Maion's eyes took in the deadly newcomer, the stallion was much larger than the mare behind him... and given his kalona nature Maion was sure it was a deadly combination that had worked well for the pair in the past, and Maion couldn't help but wonder how often the pair had played this game of theirs.... lure and trap, bait and tackle. At first Maion had been willing to ignore the stallions words, but something about the way he said 'snacks' rattled Maion's cage the wrong way. With a soft growl, nothing in comparison to the growl of a kalona he was sure, he spoke, "No one will become a snack here. Not while I still have breath in my body." Even after that, he knew instinctively that his son Drashi would either get the foals to safety or die trying, though Maion suspected that even though it would kill the stallion he would take Maion's death as the distraction he needed to get the younglings to safety.... the way it should be.

Eventhough Maion expected an attack he did not make the first move, it went against everything he believed in... so unless these beasts actually attacked no harm would befall them. "Come in peace.... or leave in pieces" was the herd moto of sorts.

Drashi stepped back instinctively towards the two young foals, and when he was close enough he spread the wings on one side to press over Eden (and now Crown's form, since he was nestled into his sister also) in an effort to offer them both protection from any attack and from the deadly nature of those before him. He also hoped that the slight contact would bring them comfort, a silent sign that he would not leave them.

His father, Maion, had asked him to do something and do it Drashi would.

Eden shook her head, he had guessed wrong. "Nope, sorry, its your turn to think of a number between 1 and 10 now." She had told Crown that if he got it wrong it was his turn, though he was so scared she didn't think he would want to play any more. Though she had to keep him distracted, if he totally lost it he was going to be in even more danger. Looking back the way they had come trying to think of anything that might help. Her eyes scanning as she spotted a couple of things but she wouldn't know that till she got a bit closer. Looking up at Drashi as he drew closer, needing his help to distract Crown and maybe to help save them without fighting, they just had to get away, all 4 of them, her idea would only slow the kalona down if it did anything. Nuzzing Crown's side she shifted, how did she help, the stallions were focussed on the 2 kalonas, not to mention why would they listen to a foal?
